Our Family of St. Paul’s relies solely on your contributions to make this project a success. GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would baptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK

“In each of our lives Jesus comes as the Bread of Life – to be eaten, to be consumed by us. This is how He loves us. Then Jesus comes in our human life as the hungry one, the other, hoping to be fed with the bread of our life, our hearts by loving, and our hands by serving. Therefore we cannot properly receive the Bread of Life unless at the same time we give the

bread of life to those in need wherever and whoever they may be. In loving and serving, we prove that we have been created in the likeness of God, for God is love and when we love we are like God.” Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish anticipates the gift of the Eucharist. In both the Second Reading and the Gospel, Jesus takes, blesses, breaks and gives. Although the initiative comes from Jesus, the disciples play a key role in that he “gave them to the disciples to set before the people.” (9:16) God sometimes uses our hands and feet to do the work of the gospel.

For Reflection: Is my sharing in the Eucharist an important part of my spiritual life? How can my hands and feet be used to do God’s work more fruitfully?

1. No matter how dire the situation, keep your cool.

2. Never underestimate your power to change yourself.

3. Never overestimate your power to change others.

4. Promise big. Deliver big.

5. Keep expectations high.

CATHOLIC HUMOR Six year old Angie and her four-year-old

brother Joel were sitting together at church. Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud.

Finally, his big sister had enough. “You’re not supposed to talk out loud in church.”

“Why? Who’s going to stop me?” Joel asked.

Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, “See those two men standing by the door? They’re hushers.”
