T HE S IXTH S UNDAY OF E ASTER : R OGATION S UNDAY M AY 17, 2020 As we continue the Great Fifty Days of celebrating our redemption through the death and resurrection of Jesus, today’s Gospel reading describes how deeply and intimately we are united with his life. Our lives are totally tied to him as the life of a branch is tied to the life of the vine. In Baptism and the Eucharist we draw our new and eternal life from Jesus, the hope and declaration of God's Grace for our days. This Sunday's reading from the Acts of the Apostles finds Paul preaching not to Jews and Greek converts to Judaism—as he usually did—but to the Greek philosophers in Athens. He proclaims that their unknown god is the God of the entire universe and the creator of all things. This God has been made known in the dying and rising of Jesus. The passage also relates to a secondary theme for this Sunday of the year, when Christians have customarily prayed for the fertility of the land and its harvest. We are called to live in HOPE. Hear the reflections of the Franciscan Friar and speaker, Richard Rohr, OFM, "It is all too easy to understate and miss that hope is not intended to be an extraordinary infusion, but an abiding state of being. We lose sight of the invitation—and in fact, our responsibility, as stewards of creation —to develop a conscious and permanent connection to this wellspring. We miss the call to become a vessel, to become a chalice into which this divine energy can pour; a lamp through which it can shine. . . We ourselves are not the source of that hope; we do not manufacture it. But the source dwells deeply within us and flows to us with an unstinting abundance, so much so that in fact it might be more accurate to say we dwell within it. . . The good news is that this deeper current does exist and you actually can find it. . . For me the journey to the source of hope is ultimately a theological journey: up and over the mountain to the sources of hope in the headwaters of the Christian Mystery. This journey to the wellsprings of hope is not something that will change your life in the short range, in the externals. Rather, it is something that will change your innermost way of seeing. From there, inevitably, the externals will rearrange. . . The journey to the wellsprings of hope is really a journey toward the center, toward the innermost ground of our being where we meet and are met by God."

THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: ROGATION SUNDAY MAY 17, 2020

As we continue the Great Fifty Days of celebrating our redemption through the death and resurrection of Jesus, today’s Gospel reading describes how deeply and intimately we are united with his life. Hear the reflections of the Franciscan Friar and speaker, Richard Rohr, OFM,

"It is all too easy to understate and miss that hope is not intended to be an extraordinary infusion, but an abiding state of being. We lose

sight of the invitation—and in fact, our responsibility, as stewards of creation—to develop a conscious and permanent connection to this wellspring. We miss the call to become a vessel, to become a chalice into which this divine energy can pour; a lamp through which it can shine. . . We ourselves are not the source of that hope; we do not manufacture it. But the source dwells deeply within us

and flows to us with an unstinting abundance, so much so that in fact it might be more accurate to say we dwell within it. .

We will hold two “mask-a-thons” this summer (one on a Saturday in July and one on a Saturday in August) where people will make their own masks and some for charity. Applicable social distancing rules will be observed.

We need one person to be the St. Paul’s coordinator (an Englewood resident who worships elsewhere is helping with this event, as well).

We also need six people to bring sewing machines to St. Paul’s and teach people to make their own reusable masks at each event.

We’ll have people register for time slots to minimize the number of people waiting to sew.

Please contact Kai at [email protected] or 201.923.4615 if you’d like to help, especially if you can bring a sewing machine or donate fabric.
