Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
Yesterday, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the liturgy invited us to turn our gaze to Mary, mother of Jesus and our mother, Star of Hope for every man. Today, the second Sunday of Advent, the liturgy presents us with the austere fig-ure of the precursor, whom the
evangelist Matthew introduces in this way: "John the Bap-tist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'" (Matthew 3:1-2).
His mission was to smooth out the roads before the Messi-ah, calling the people of Israel to repent of their sins and to correct every iniquity. John the Baptist announced the im-minent judgment with demanding words: "Every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire" (Matthew 3:10). He challenged the hypocrisy of those who felt secure simply because they belonged to the chosen people: Before God, he said, no one has a right to boast, but must bear "good fruit as evidence of conver-sion" (Matthew 3:8).
As we pursue the journey of Advent, as we prepare to cele-brate the birth of Christ, John the Baptist's call to conver-sion resounds in our communities. It is a pressing invitation to open our hearts and welcome the Son of God who comes into our midst to make the divine judgment manifest.
The Father, writes the evangelist John, judges no one, but rather has entrusted the power to judge to the Son of Man (cf. John 5:22, 27). And it is today, in the present, that our future destiny is at stake; it is the concrete way we conduct ourselves in this life that decides our eternal fate. At the sunset of our days on earth, at the moment of death, we will be evaluated according to whether or not we resemble the Child who is about to be born in the lowly cave in Bethlehem, since he is the criterion by which God measures humanity.
The heavenly Father, who in the birth of his only-begotten Son manifests his merciful love to us, calls us to follow in his footsteps, making our existence, as he did, a gift of love. And the fruits of love are the "good fruits of conver-sion" to which John the Baptist refers, when he directs his pointed words at the Pharisees and Sadducees who were in the crowds at Christ's baptism.
Through the Gospel, John the Baptist continues to speak down the centuries, to every generation. His clear and hard words are more than ever salutary for us men and women
of today, in whom even the way to live and perceive Christmas is, unfortunately, very often affected by a ma-terialistic mentality.
The "voice" of the great prophet asks us to prepare the way of the Lord who comes in the deserts of today, exter-nal and interior deserts, thirsty for the living water that is Christ.
May the Virgin Mary guide us to a true conversion of heart, that we may make the choices necessary to make our mentalities to be in tune with the Gospel. (Given Dec 9, 2007, Angelus)
Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass
On Saturday, December 12th, the actual feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, Mass will be celebrated at 5:00 a.m., followed by the sing-ing of the mañanitas. Masses will be celebrated in both the old and new churches.
Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe Our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place on Sunday, December 13th. The procession will begin at 9:15 am in front of the city hall. Food Sale: The Guadalupe Festi-val is an important fundraiser for
our parish. We will have a variety of food for sale to help raise funds for the CCD Office.

Reminder: Holy day of obligation Tuesday, December 8, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Mary, under this title, is the patron of the United States of America. This also marks the beginning of Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy. Fun fact: The tradition of Holy Years started 700 years ago. Since then, the Catholic Church has celebrated 26 jubilees. Of those, only three have been “extraordinary” (including this one called by Francis); the last was called by Pope St. John Paul II in 1983 to mark the 1,950 years after the death of Jesus.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
Ayer, solemnidad de la Inmacu-lada Concepción, la liturgia nos invitó a dirigir la mirada a María, Madre de Jesús y Madre nuestra, Estrella de esperanza para todo hombre. Hoy, segundo domingo de Adviento, nos presenta la fi-gura austera del Precursor, que el evangelista san Mateo introduce así: «Por aquel tiempo, Juan Bautista se presentó en el desier-
to de Judea predicando: "Convertíos, porque está cerca el reino de los cielos"» (Mt 3, 1-2).
Tenía la misión de preparar y allanar el sendero al Mesías, exhortando al pueblo de Israel a arrepentirse de sus peca-dos y corregir toda injusticia. Con palabras exigentes, Juan Bautista anunciaba el juicio inminente: «El árbol que no da fruto será talado y echado al fuego» (Mt 3, 10). Sobre todo ponía en guardia contra la hipocresía de quien se sentía seguro por el mero hecho de pertenecer al pueblo elegido: ante Dios — decía— nadie tiene títulos para enorgullecer-se, sino que debe dar "frutos dignos de conversión" (Mt 3, 8).
Mientras prosigue el camino del Adviento, mientras nos preparamos para celebrar el Nacimiento de Cristo, resuena en nuestras comunidades esta exhortación de Juan Bautista a la conversión. Es una invitación apremiante a abrir el co-razón y acoger al Hijo de Dios que viene a nosotros para manifestar el juicio divino. El Padre —escribe el evangelis-ta san Juan— no juzga a nadie, sino que ha dado al Hijo el poder de juzgar, porque es Hijo del hombre (cf. Jn 5, 22. 27). Hoy, en el presente, es cuando se juega nuestro destino futuro; con el comportamiento concreto que tenemos en esta vida decidimos nuestro destino eterno.
En el ocaso de nuestros días en la tierra, en el momento de la muerte, seremos juzgados según nuestra semejanza o desemejanza con el Niño que está a punto de nacer en la pobre cueva de Belén, puesto que él es el criterio de medi-da que Dios ha dado a la humanidad.
El Padre celestial, que en el nacimiento de su Hijo unigéni-to nos manifestó su amor misericordioso, nos llama a se-guir sus pasos convirtiendo, como él, nuestra existencia en un don de amor. Y los frutos del amor son los «frutos dig-nos de conversión» a los que hacía referencia san Juan Bautista cuando, con palabras tajantes, se dirigía a los fari-seos y a los saduceos que acudían entre la multitud a su bautismo.
Mediante el Evangelio, Juan Bautista sigue hablando a lo largo de los siglos a todas las generaciones. Sus palabras claras y duras resultan muy saludables para nosotros,
hombres y mujeres de nuestro tiempo, en el que, por des-gracia, también el modo de vivir y percibir la Navidad muy a menudo sufre las consecuencias de una mentalidad materialista.
La "voz" del gran profeta nos pide que preparemos el camino del Señor que viene, en los desiertos de hoy, de-siertos exteriores e interiores, sedientos del agua viva que es Cristo.
Que la Virgen María nos guíe a una auténtica conversión del corazón, a fin de que podamos realizar las opciones necesarias para sintonizar nuestra mentalidad con el Evangelio.
