BAPTISMS Dates and times are announced at the baptismal class. Parents of children to be baptized must attend two classes of prepara-tion. Godparents need only attend the first class. If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. THE IMMORALITY OF IN VITRO FERTILIZATION A common goal found within the pro-life community is to achieve a greater respect for the dignity of human life from conception until natural death. But as the practice of in vitro fertilization (IVF) grows more popular, human life is increasingly being treated as a commodity to be purchased and discarded at will. While many pro-lifers find IVF itself to be offensive to human dignity, the UK’s Daily Mail recently reported that dozens of women who chose to conceive through IVF ended up changing their minds about being mothers, and aborted their babies. Statistics from the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) revealed that on average 80 abortions are carried out in England and Wales each year following IVF treatments. In 2007, the highest annual total reported, the figure was 97 abortions. “I had no idea there were so many post-IVF abortions – and each one is a tragedy,” said Bill Ledger, a fertility doctor and member of the HFEA. “These women can’t be surprised to be pregnant. You can’t have an IVF pregnancy by accident.” Don’t you just want to ask Dr. Ledger why, exactly each one is a tragedy? It is the nature of IVF treatments that embryonic human beings die either by design or as an entirely predictable consequence of the treatment itself. Is this only a tragedy when the child dies because his mother changed her mind? The growing awareness of problems with IVF is worldwide. In Hong Kong, a high-profile fertility clinic admitted this week that it botched two IVF treatments by implanting the wrong embryos – leading to the death of those fragile lives. “The embryos were taken out and discarded.” The women who were affected by the clinic’s mistake reportedly received counseling and financial compensation. One wonders how much of the counseling had to do with the shock of not receiving what they paid for, and how much had to do with the loss of those human lives. Women spend thousands of dollars for IVF treatments in order to conceive a child. And with IVF, women have the opportunity to conceive based on personal gender preference as well. One UK woman recently took out a loan on her home to spend $24,000 to have a female child through IVF. Heather, the woman, and her husband Paul flew to California for the gender selective IVF procedure. “Out of eleven eggs collected six developed into viable embryos. Of these six, only two were female,” the Daily Mail reported. “The female embryos were implanted into Heather’s womb – with the hope they would develop into a baby daughter.” There is no word in the article on the fate of the four male “viable embryos.” Most likely, they were discarded as “waste.” While those who procure IVF treatments may have good intentions, the reality is that the procedure requires the killing of millions of human lives and seriously degrades the value of human life, even when it is “successful” in bringing about the birth of a child. In Evangelium vitae, the Holy Father wrote, “Society as a whole must respect, defend and promote the dignity of every human person, at every moment and in every condition of that person’s life.” Even if that person is an embryo.

Memorial Mass The month of November has always been a special time for prayer in honor of our loved ones who have died. As usual, here in the parish, we will be celebrating a Memorial Mass. This Mass gives families who have lost loved ones, an opportunity to express their sorrow before the Lord, and receive the support of our parish community. This Me-morial Mass will take place on Wednesday, November 2nd, at 6:30 p.m. If you have lost a loved one in the years of 2010 and 2011, and want him/her remembered by name, there will be forms available by the entrances of the church for you to fill out, or you may request a form in the parish office. The completed form must be legible and turned in to the parish office by Thursday, October 27. We invite all members of the parish to come and join us in prayer and support at the Mass for our deceased. *If you have already submitted the names of your loved ones before, please don’t submit them again. Their names are already in the parish “Book of Life”. You are welcome to look at it, at the end of the Memorial Mass.

Preparing for the Roman Missal, 3rd Edition On November 27, the First Sunday of Advent, the Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, will be implemented in the United States of America. If you have been hearing the buzz but are not completely up to speed on the new Roman Missal, here are ten things you need to know: 1. It is not a new Mass, it is a new translation for a new edition of the

Missal. Because a new edition of the Missale Romanum, the Lat-in Roman Missal, was promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 2000, it was necessary for all the countries of the world to translate this missal into the various local languages. The new missal has add-ed features: prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Intentions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. In the case of the English-speaking world, a common translation of the common text was sought through the Interna-tional Commission for English in the Liturgy (ICEL) to ensure uniformity.

2. Vatican guidelines for translation. The translation of the new Roman Missal was carried out under the newest Vatican guide-lines for translating prayers into modern local (i.e., vernacular) languages. These were given in the instruction Liturgiam Au-thenticam, published in 2001, urging a stronger adherence to the original Latin wording and structure than earlier directives. In the new translation, the unique style of the Roman Rite is closely maintained. The texts are marked by a heightened style of English speech and a grammatical structure that follows closely the Latin text. In addition, many biblical and poetic im-ages—such as “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter un-der my roof…” (Communion Rite, taken from Matthew 8:8) and “…from the rising of the sun to its setting” (Eucharistic Prayer III, taken from Psalm 113), that were lost in the 1973 translation—have been restored.

La Inmoralidad de Fecundación In Vitro Uno de los objetivos comunes que se encuentra dentro de la comunidad pro-vida es lograr un mayor respeto por la dignidad de la vida humana, desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. Mientras la práctica de la Fecundación In Vitro (IVF) se vuelve más popular, la vida humana es cada vez mas tratada como una comodidad para comprar y desechar. Muchos defensores de la vida encuentran que IVF es ofensivo a la dignidad humana, el Daily Mail del Reino Unido informo recientemente que decenas de mujeres que optaron por concebir a través de fecundación in vitro terminaron cambiando de opinión acerca de ser madres y abortaron sus bebes. Las estadísticas de la Fertilización Humana y Embriología (HFEA) reveló que un promedio de 80 abortos se llevan a cabo en Inglaterra y Gales cada año después de los tratamientos de IVF. En 2007, el total anual más alto reportado, la cifra fue de 97 abortos. “No tenía ni idea de que hubiera tantos abortos post-IVF – y cada uno es una tragedia”, dijo Bill Ledger, un especialista en fertilidad y miembro de la HFEA. “Estas mujeres no pueden ser sorprendidas de estar embarazadas. Octubre mes de las Misiones La Iglesia Católica vive el mes de octubre dedicado mundialmente a despertar el Espíritu Misionero en los fieles, con gestos de soli-daridad hacia los 200,000 misioneros que entregan sus vidas por el anuncio del Evangelio en el mundo. Durante este mes, llamado "Mes de las Misiones" se intensifica la animación misionera, uniéndonos todos en oración, el sacrificio y el aporte económico a favor de las misiones, a fin de que el evan-gelio se proclame a todos los hombres. El domingo 23 de octubre de 2011 se celebrá la Jornada Mundial de las Misiones "Domund" en todas las Iglesias locales, como fiesta de la catolicidad y de solidaridad universal. La colecta de este día es destinada al fondo universal para las misiones más necesitadas. Juan Pablo II en el Nº 72 de la Redemptoris Missio, menciona a los "movimientos eclesiales dotados de dinamismo misionero" que, "cuando se integran con humildad en la vida de las iglesias locales y son acogidos cordialmente por los Obispos y sacerdotes en las estructuras diocesanas y parroquiales, representan un ver-dadero don de Dios para la nueva evangelización y para la activi-dad misionera propiamente dicha.".

EL EXTRAÑO Unos cuantos años después que yo naciera, mi padre conoció a un extraño, recién llegado a nuestra pequeña población. Desde el princi-pio, mi padre quedó fascinado con este encantador personaje, y ense-guida lo invitó a que viviera con nuestra familia. El extraño aceptó y desde entonces ha estado con nosotros. Mientras yo crecía, nunca pregunté su lugar en mi familia; en mi mente joven ya tenía un lugar muy especial. Mis padres eran instructores complemen-tarios: Mi mamá me enseñó lo que era bueno y lo que era malo y mi papá me enseñó a obedecer. Pero el extraño era nuestro narrador. Nos mantenía hechizados por horas con aventuras, misterios y comedias. El siempre tenía respuestas para cualquier cosa que quisiéramos saber de política, historia o ciencia. ¡Conocía todo lo del pasado, del presen-te y hasta podía predecir el futuro! Llevó a mi familia al primer partido de fútbol. Me hacia reír, y me hacía llorar. El extraño nunca paraba de hablar, pero a mi padre no le importaba. A veces, mi mamá se levantaba temprano y callada, mien-tras que el resto de nosotros estábamos pendientes para escuchar lo que tenía que decir, pero ella se iba a la cocina para tener paz y tran-quilidad. (Ahora me pregunto si ella habrá rogado alguna vez, para que el extraño se fuera.) Mi padre dirigió nuestro hogar con ciertas convicciones morales, pero el extraño nunca se sentía obligado para honrarlas. Las blasfemias, las malas palabras, por ejemplo, no se permitían en nuestra casa Ni por parte de nosotros, ni de nuestros amigos o de cualquiera que nos visitase. Sin embargo, nuestro visitante de largo plazo, lograba sin problemas usar su lenguaje inapropiado que a veces quemaba mis oídos y que hacia que papá se retorciera y mi madre se ruborizara. Mi papá nunca nos dio permiso para tomar alcohol. Pero el extraño nos animó a intentarlo y a hacerlo regularmente. Hizo que los cigarri-llos parecieran frescos e inofensivos, y que los cigarros y las pipas se vieran distinguidas. Hablaba libremente (quizás demasiado) sobre sexo. Sus comentarios eran a veces evidentes, otras sugestivos, y gene-ralmente vergonzosos. Ahora sé que mis conceptos sobre relaciones fueron influenciados fuertemente durante mi adolescencia por el ex-traño. Repetidas veces lo criticaron, mas nunca hizo caso a los valores de mis padres, aun así, permaneció en nuestro hogar. Han pasado más de cincuenta años desde que el extraño se mudó con nuestra familia. Desde entonces ha cambiado mucho; ya no es tan
