AMORIS LAETITIA

"A mother who watches over her child with tenderness and com-passion helps him or her to grow in confidence and to experience that the world is a good and welcoming place.” N. 175 ‘Mothers are the strongest antidote to the spread of self-centered individualism…It is they who testify to the beauty of life.’ Certainly, ‘a society without mothers would be dehumanized, for mothers are always, even in the worst of times, witnesses to tenderness, dedication and moral strength. Mothers often communicate the deepest meaning of religious practice in the first prayers and acts of devotion that their children learn…Without mothers, not only would there be no new faithful, but the faith itself would lose a good part of its simple and profound warmth…Dear mothers: Thank you! Thank you for what you are in your family and for what you give to the Church and the world.’ (N. 174) May 20: Donate to help mothers and families, whether through your parish, St. André Home in Biddeford, the McAuley Resi-dence in Portland, a teen pregnancy center, or similar organiza-tions.

Eucharistic Ministers: St. Peter Chanel is in need of Eucharistic Ministers. If you feel you have a calling to serve in this ministry, please contact Fr. Jim to let him know of your interest.

LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

"Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!" We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus change the way they live and conduct their af-fairsall give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observ-ing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healedall point to something greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit?

Columbiettes Memorial MassThere will be a Mass in celebration of the deceased members of the Columbiettes on Thursday, May 24th. It will begin with a liv-ing Rosary followed by a Candlelight ceremony at 5pm. Mass will begin at 6pm. All Family, friends and Columbiettes are all wel-come to attend and honor our Ladies.

2018 CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS THIS WEEKEND: The Parishioners of St. Peter Chanel have a long history of show-ing their commitment to the Diocese of Portland by supporting the Catholic Appeal. At the end of the Month, all parish families will be asked to make a pledge. We ask that you give prayerful considera-tion to this important request from the Bishop. The Appeal funds the agencies and ministries that support thousands of our brothers and sisters in need across the state of Maine. We hope you will respond generously. We thank you in advance for your participation in this vitally important initiative. You will find envelopes and pencils availa-ble in the pews. You may fill them out and deposit them in the col-lection basket or bring them to the office for mailing to the diocese. Thank you and God Bless you for your efforts.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: How do we know when we receive the Holy Spirit?Answer: My brothers and I discovered something as we got older. There's a little bit of dad in us. Each time we catch ourselves using one of his gestures, expressions, or comments about a meal, we say, "I'm getting more like Dad!" Many laughs and goodnatured kidding have come out of it. Mom loves it, and so does Dad, although I doubt he'd admit it!When we are confirmed, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There is no radical change in us that makes us seem suddenly different. Over a period of time, we come to see that there is a little bit of the Spirit in us. We catch ourselves using the gifts, and often end up wondering where a bit of wisdom came from, or why we were so patient or we feel an intensity in our prayer. Perhaps we felt drawn to deepen our spiritual life or found courage in wit-nessing to our faith. That's when we know we have received the Holy Spirit. We take on his image. Yes, we grow in age, grace, and wisdom, but we also grow in our awareness and understanding of the working of God in our life. We become more god-like, realizing we're getting more and more like God. Our thoughts, words, and actions carry that quality and others, too, see it in us. You might call it holi-ness. But be confident! There's a little bit of him in all of us.
