      Angelina, Parishioner

Dear An(e!ina"  4or someone to make a categorical claim thatope 4rancis represents a Eradical breakF from his predecessors

seems to me to be uite astonishing. Hou must be a fan= Hes, )say EastonishingF because anyone who knows the teaching offormer popes can hear their voices echoed 'sometimes uiteloudly( in the writing, homilies and even off$the$cuff remarks ofope 4rancis.

There are obvious differences in style between our current popeand his predecessors, but a Eradical breakFI Jo way. Thesubstance is the same. )t is the Gospel of 1esus Christ and theteaching of the Church handed down to us from the Apostles.

;ne powerful e8ample is ope 4rancisK teaching on mercy, which he says is Ethe ultimate and supreme act by which Godcomes to meet us the fundamental law that dwells in the heart

of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothersand sisters on the path of life, the bridge that connects God andman, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved foreverdespite our sinfulnessF 'E0isericordiae @ultus,F M"(. This isradical teaching, to be sure, but it is not a break from theteaching of earlier popes.

ope 9enedict N@) taught that mercy Eis the essence ofChristianity because it is the essence of God himself. God isopenness, acceptance, and dialogue. And in his relations withus, sinful mankind, he is mercy, compassion, grace, forgiveness.F ;ur pope emeritus, who prefers to be called 4ather9enedict, believes we are called to be people of mercy because

that is the greatest possible e8pression of our union with Godand with the entire human family.

St. 1ohn aul )) once wrote, E0ercy is the central nucleus of theevangelical message. 0erciful love also illuminates the faceof the Church and shows itself both through the sacraments/ especially the sacrament of penance/and through works ofcharity. 4rom divine mercy, which brings peace to hearts, arises authentic peace for the world, peace between peoples, andamong various cultures and religions.F

All three popes tell us that mercy begins with sharing our foodand drink with those who are hungry and thirsty. 0ercy compels

us to clothe the naked and shelter the homeless, to visit the sickand imprisoned, and to bury the dead. These very practicalactions, which we call Ecorporal works of mercy,F reveal thefundamental fact of GodKs love for us as it is manifested in thelife and ministry of 1esus Christ.

To feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty are the first twocorporal works of mercy. As 9ishop 1oseph epe writes in hiscolumn, Letter from the 9ishop: ECatholic Charities of Southern Nevada has cared for the needs of infants, children, families,

seniors and the homeless by providing food, shelter,

employment, and crisis intervention. They not only provide a service but help others to live a life of dignity, deserving of all

peoples.F And yet there are still hungry people / includingchildren and elderly people / right here in Las @egas. The good bishop says, ESharing your blessings with those less fortunate isan expression of our gratitude for all God has given to us.F 9ut

how many more were not fedI

Throughout the world community 'the family of nations(,millions of people are hungry and thirsty every day. Accordingto Catholic 3elief Services 'C3S(, gains in reducing globalhunger have been nearly wiped out in recent years by sharplyincreasing prices on some of the most basic foodstuffs in everyregion of the world, and by the current global financial crisis.

roBections indicate that the global food price crisis will be longterm, and that the impact on poor people in developing countrieswill be severe.

ope 4rancis challenges us to respond to this crisis here at homeand around the globe. 2e are called to feed the hungry and givedrink to the thirsty as a fundamental reuirement of ourChristian discipleship. 2e cannot proclaim the Good Jews ofour salvation unless we also share with our sisters and brothersthe food and drink they need to live full and healthy lives.

2hat can we doI 2e can pray for an end to hunger and thirstwherever they are found/in our neighborhoods, in our state andnation, and throughout the world. 2e can support our very own

St. @incent de aul food pantries, Catholic Charities agencies inour diocese, and the international C3S. 2e can advocate forlaws and government policies that promote a Bust and euitabledistribution of the worldKs food and water.

E1esus Christ is the face of the 4atherKs mercy,F ope 4rancisteaches, in continuity with his predecessors and the holy Gospel.LetKs perform the corporal works of mercy. LetKs be the face of1esus for others during this Lenten season and always=
