Dear Father Gem: My friend who is a devout
Catholic is currently dating a Methodist guy who attends
Sunday Mass regularly with her. ne weeend" they
attended a Mass where children received their First
Communion. #e was enthralled at the sight and ased
the assisting deacon whether he could receive #oly
Communion even though he is not a Catholic" and the
deacon replied" $Do whatever is in your own heart.% &s
that correct' Can a non(Catholic receive Communion in
a Catholic church' ( )ngelina" Concerned Catholic
Dear An&elina: /an#n -- 1 lays out the general rule:/atholics are to receive the sacraments from /atholicministers, and /atholic ministers lawfully administer/atholic sacraments only to /atholics. This is consistentwith the traditional /atholic theological concept of thesacraments: sacraments presuppose faith, and alsonourish, strengthen, and express it =/// 112>>. ;n otherwords, to receive /atholic sacraments, you9re supposed to believe what the /atholic /hurch teaches that thosesacraments actually do.
&rotestant churches deny the Real &resence of /hrist,
8ody, 8lood, Soul and 7ivinity, in the 8lessedSacrament. They generally teach that Holy /ommunion ismerely a symbol that signifies a /hristian9s reception of/hrist, but is not an actual reception of Him./onseNuently, while they may celebrate communionservices, these are not the same as a /atholic ass, inwhich an ordained priest confects the 8ody and 8lood of/hrist at the altar by saying the words of consecrationover bread and wine. This is freNuently misunderstood bywell meaning &rotestants, especially because the worshipservices in their own churches often appear e he is in danger of death or if, in the Budgment of thediocesan bishop or conference of bishops, some othergrave necessity urges it3=#> he cannot approach a minister from his own church3=)> he as5s for the /atholic sacrament=s> freely, of hisown accord3 and=> he demonstrates /atholic faith in these sacramentsand is properly disposed to receive them.
The /onference of /atholic 8ishops in each country is permitted to determine what constitutes the Fgrave and pressing needG mentioned in criterion P3 an individual parish priest is not allowed to ma5e this determination forhimself.
As we can see, it is technically possible for a non$/atholic/hristian to receive Holy /ommunion from a /atholicminister, but the set of necessary circumstances delineated
in canon *. is so restrictive that it will not happen veryoften. And the situation you described, in which aethodist routinely attends Sunday ass with his/atholic friend, definitely does not meet the reNuiredcriteria for his reception of /ommunion. He clearly is notin danger of death3 there is no indication that he is unableto as5 for the sacraments from his own protestantminister3 and there is not even any evidence that he believes, in accord with /atholic teaching, in the Real&resence of /hrist in the 2ucharist.
0hile the deacon who approved of his reception of Holy/ommunion presumably wished to encourage this non$
/atholic9s attendance at wee5ly ass, he violated both/atholic theological teaching and canon law by allowinghim to receive Holy /ommunion under thesecircumstances.
Such motives may be admirable, the result nonethelessfalsifies the sacramental meaning of the 2ucharist as botha sign of communion with /hrist and communion with the/atholic /hurch.
