Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday — March 6 Lenten Regulations

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

6. Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence, should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

AN EXPRESSION OF OUR APPRECIATION On behalf of Sister Pauline Schutz’s entire extended “Birth Family,” I would like to convey to everyone at St. Pius X, her “Parish Family,” our deep appreciation for the home you provided to her for almost four decades. Sr. Pauline’s lifetime can be viewed as having three components – the first 18 years that she lived at home, the 69½ years that she spent in training and in service as a Franciscan nun, which also includes the 38 years she was assigned to St. Pius X Parish. So the greatest amount of her life was spent right here in your wonderful parish. Everyone at St. Pius – the pastors, priests, deacons, administrators, staff of the parish & the school, teachers, students as well as every parishioner with whom she came in contact – welcomed her with open arms. Sr. Pauline thrived in the warm, loving, helpful environment that she found here at St. Pius X. We were told that she was involved in 26 different endeavors over the years. That is commendable, but what is equally commendable were the multiple dozens of parishioners who staffed each of those undertakings and enabled them to become successful. What a beautiful working relationship to behold! When Sr. Pauline’s eyesight and hearing weakened, so many parishioners re-doubled their efforts to assist her. As a result she was able to continue being a productive member of the parish. Her accomplishments were truly the result of “team effort.” And the numerous ways in which the parish demonstrated the affection, appreciation and high regard they felt for Sr. Pauline, helped her to experience greater success and fulfillment than possibly at any other time of her life. Knowing how deeply Sr. Pauline was loved and appreciated – even treasured – by so many people who take seriously their membership in the faith community of St. Pius X Church, is positively heartwarming to us. The beautiful Wake Service that the parish provided was deeply cherished by the family and was surely in accord with Sr. Pauline’s preferences. You have enabled Sr. Pauline to live out her vows as a consecrated Franciscan nun in a truly exceptional way. And be assured – as is her Birth Family – that she will continue to intercede both for us and for her Parish Family from her new vantage point in Heaven with our Lord and Savior. With heartfelt gratitude to all, Georgiana Schutz Glennon

Student Council members collected the donated caps from all the classrooms today. The caps will be used to help purchase Buddy Benches for our playground. The grades are having a contest to see which one can bring in the most caps. So far second grade is in the lead and the winning grade is treated to an ice cream party. Please continue to save your caps from water bottles, milk cartons, etc. for our school. You can drop these off in the school office or in the Mary Room in the back of the Church until March.

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Soon our diocese will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. I ask for your support to this important mission. From 1922 to 1991 the Ukrainian people lived under a repressive communist government that restricted both religious and cultural practice. In that time Ukrainians faced multiple wars that left a suffering people in their wake. Still today Ukraine is rebuilding from this difficult past.

Eastern Ukraine especially suffered for many years as a stronghold of communism. The Catholic faith was illegal or restricted, so atheism grew stronger and family values deteriorated. Today the Church is working to rebuild these values.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine, women who find themselves in unplanned pregnancies believe that abortion might be their only answer. Many of these women grew up as orphans themselves. But you have given these women an option to protect life. Your generosity to the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe has made it possible to create two homes for single mothers where they can live with their children. While living in these homes, women receive help with child care and employment. Not only have you helped these women choose life, but you also have given them the tools to create stable living and working situations for themselves and their children.

This collection will take place on the weekend of March 9 and March 10. For more information about the collection and who it supports, visit www.usccb.org/ccee. Thank you for your help to restore the Church and build the future in Central and Eastern Europe.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

Pledge your gift to the CMAA! This is Commitment Weekend, when we are all asked to pledge our support for the 2019 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). God calls all of us to be Signs of Hope for those in need in the Diocese of Joliet. The CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit so many and allow us to do God’s work here on earth. Our parish could not possibly

accomplish all that the diocese is able to when we all work together. Our parish’s goal for the 2019 CMAA is $66,800. If we raise more than this goal, 70 percent of the amount over goal will be returned to the parish. Please prayerfully reflect on how you can best support this year’s CMAA. You may make your gift using one of the pledge envelopes available in the church, by returning the pledge card you received in the mail, visiting jolietdioceseappeal.org, or texting “Donate” to 815-205-1949 to link to a donation form from your mobile phone.

Father Boecker Council 6090 in conjunction with the St. Vincent DePaul Food pantry will have their 2nd Annual Food collection, which is designed to help fight hunger. It is a small sacrifice and turns it into a big difference in the lives of others. All that is required is the desire to help others. As you prepare for Easter by sacrificing during Lent, remember the 40 days and nights that Christ spent in the desert, without food or water, praying and preparing for his sacrifice on behalf of mankind. We are asking that you collect one can of food per day during the 40 days of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, and then drop them off at church in the container provided on Sunday, April 7th.
