My worthy brother Knights,

As we begin our 2016 -2017 Council year, let me reflect on the past. Our Council has again earned the coveted Columbian Award for all the good works we have done this past year. This was done through the hard work of all of you and I thank each one of you for being the exemplary Knights you all are. Special thanks goes to our Deputy Grand Knight who stood as my strong right hand these past three years and will continue on for another year; to Past Grand Knight Joe Gulotta who served as Program Director and through his hard work insured the success of all our programs; to our Financial Secretary Peter Karculias who kept us straight on all the financial chores and paperwork required by Supreme; to Past Grand Knight Dick Goddard who kept our fraternity together with his fun and innovative social activities; to Past Grand Knight Joe Keaney for always being there and chairing a tiring and difficult Flea Market event; to Past Grand Knight Brian Landry for his untiring efforts behind the scenes to insure projects get done and the dishes get washed and to everyone who was actively involved in our many activities.

Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, our four principles and by daily living and adhering to these principles , they became the four reasons that all of us together, as a Council, were able to successfully do our many accomplishments which have so positively affected real persons in our Parish, our Diocese and our community.

Justice, Faith, Hope, Friendship, Morality, Brotherly Love, Prudence, Fortitude, Respect, Civility and Truth. At first glance, they may seem only words, but these are the virtues touted by Pope Francis in well crafted talks. Look closer at these words and behold their true meaning for they are age old requirements for people to live together in Unity as a community. These virtues in conjunction with our four principals will allow us, if we follow and heed them, to develop our lives as better Catholics, Knights and citizens. Adherence to them will lead us on to

continued success.

Support your officers and your Council this coming year. When able, come to our meetings and participate in our events. We are a brotherhood and a family. Let’s strengthen those bonds in the coming year. Your officers and I look forward to serving this Council and each and every one of you this coming year.

Vivat Jesus

Your fraternal brother in Christ,

Emmanuel M. “Dutch” Steenbakker, Grand Knight

Birthdays

Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortu-nately, the numbers they report continue to be discour-aging.

A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable.

In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn.

If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family’s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I’ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help.

Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about “making the wrong decision.” Talk with me, your agent, and, afterwards, you’ll understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family’s future.

A Prayer for Healing...

Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands.

We place our sick in Your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servants to health

again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy

will and know that whatever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen.

Prayer INTENTIONSState Charity Raffle 2016

Our council raised $6,960 for the 2016 Arizona Charity Raffle under Brother Ron Blanchard's leadership. Congratulations and thanks to Ron for a job well done. Our council earned recognition for a 10% increase over last year's amount. Grand Knight Dutch Steenbakker presented Ron with a 2016 sticker to be added to our State Charities Raffle plaque.

FIRST TIME SUCCESSThe Silent Auction and Special Raffle at the Polish Dinner/Dance was a first time success for our Council. Both of these new elements of a fund raiser were supported mostly by our Council Members. Special recognition for their help by donating items are Brother Frank Fieldhouse and wife Eva, Brother Ben Spicer and wife Helen, PGK Peter Karculias, Grand Knight Dutch Steenbakker and wife Vickie.

The Ladies Auxiliary provided gift baskets and two Polish Wheel Cakes baked by Kim Pinda. We raised $906.68 at the Silent Auction and $325 for the Special Raffle. Figures not confirmed at this date for the total event but the pure profit of $1231.68 from just this part of the fund raiser is encouraging. This could only be done with the help of dedicated Knights and their families. Thanks to all that contributed making this part of the fund raiser a success.

I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, but it is good to reiterate the dangers associated with the kind of weather we have been having this year and the things necessary to keep you and your family safe.

First, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! I don’t know about you, but I have to constantly remind myself to drink water. When traveling it is a good idea to have water with you in the car. Never know when you could break down. You can last a long time without food, but it is another story without water. The first sign you need water is a dryness in your mouth. You know you are in trouble when you feel dizzy and actually feel nauseated. Don’t forget to drink water!

Wear sunscreen. This is the time of year to wear short sleeves, shorts, bathing suits - the least amount of clothing without being arrested. Exposing our skin to the kind of sun we love here in Arizona is opening yourself up to cancer of the skin. How many of you have had to have spots removed? Prevent having to go though that and wear sunscreen. For more information on what SPF to use, read this from the Skin Cancer Foundation.

http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/sunscreens-explained

The monsoons are coming. With them come rains that can swiftly raise water levels that lend to dangerous situations. I can’t think of a year I have lived in Arizona when a reported death has not been aired on TV of someone trying to cross a wash that ends up being swept away and drowned. They even came up with the “Stupid Motorist Law” for folks that survive their attempts to cross a wash and find themselves in need of saving. KVOA has a clip about this and can be seen here:

http://www.kvoa.com/story/32218480/stupid-motorist-law-serves-as-safety-reminder-for-motorists

Lastly for this article, pools seem to take the lives of children every year. It is easy to be distracted but necessary to watch those children all the time. Be vigilant with pool safety - surround it with a fence and watch the kids.
