My worthy brother Knights,

In this “Year if Mercy”, we need to reflect upon what this means to us and what is expected of a Catholic gentleman. As I see it, the basic interpretation of what our Pope has laid out for us this year, is that we help the lowest of the low with compassion, tenderness and altruism. This fits perfectly into the belief and philosophy of the Knights of Columbus. Without really thinking about it, this is what our Council does through the daily endeavors of our Knights.

Look into a mirror and reflect on what you see. For only you know the inner man inside, the things he has done which define his Catholicism and Knighthood, and what moves him to do what he does. As your Grand Knight, I see the light of our Faith in our God and the light of the aspirations you willingly undertook when you took the oaths of the degrees you went through as a Knight of Columbus in each and every one of you. After you have reflected on the image of your inner self, are you satisfied that your efforts and contributions are helping the light of our Faith in our God and the light from the worthy activities of our Order burn stronger and brighter? For you are the fuel which enables this Light.

Our modern age provides for more leisure time then our fore fathers had. The inventive genius of our civilization

has made great strides in lightening our work and providing entertain-ment forums to beguile us in our leisure. We are daily faced with the dilemma of having more free time than ever before, with some exceptions, and yet are unable to fit into our available leisure time all of the things we wish to do.

We face a dichotomy on how we, as individuals, utilize our time on earth; do we bow exclusively to the tempta-tions of personal pleasure which teem around us or blend our needs with those making this world better

in the image of what Jesus laid out for us?

As you look into your mirror, repeat the oaths you took as a Knight, recommit yourself to be the fuel of the fire which brightens the light. Find time for others and if you feel you have not done all that you could have, reconnect with your Council. I personally feel that as a Council we work hard and do well for our Faith, our Parish and our Community, but, can we, as a group, or as individuals do better? Only you know the answer. Thank you for all you do.

Vivat Jesus

Birthdays

You know the old saying, “the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence,” but we all know that it rarely is. The same holds true when it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage offered by another company. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the “greener” grass on the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet — in some cases, a lot less. That’s why it pays to remember another old adage, “Read the fine print.”

There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with another company. I’ll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here — pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention. First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period — typically two years — after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage.

Second, it’s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you’ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you’re older now than you were when you took out your current coverage. There’s no way around that. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors can affect the amount of coverage you’ll get for your premium dollar.

If someone encourages you to replace — or worse, drop — your existing coverage, please call me. I’ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest.

Family of the Month - NovemberDan and Kim Pinda

Kim and Dan Pinda are a quintessential Catholic Family, quietly active in numerous church activi-ties, deeply religious and essential to our Church and the Knights of Columbus. They are a loving, practi-cal Catholic family with 3 children. They serve as an inspiration to all of us, involving their family in all Church and Council activities. Dan served as a Council Officer for over 4 years and Kim is active in our Council Ladies Auxiliary. They spend untold hours working with the Arizona Special Olympic. The Pinda family can always be depended on to pitch in wherever needed. With their love and ready smiles, they serve as an inspiration and example of what a Catholic Knights of Columbus family should be.

Knight of the Month - NovemberAnthony S. Pennisi

Tony Pennisi has been the mainstay of our Council’s monthly Red Cross Drive for over 4 years. He works closely with the Red Cross, our Council and our Parish to insure required resources and manpower which has led to always successful blood drives. Even though Tony is still actively employed in a job which requires numerous trips out of state, he remains involved with all Parish and Council activities whenever possible. He is a faithful Knight and a devoted and practical practitioner of his faith. He is an example well worth emulating by out membership. It is our Council’s honor to give him this award.

e-Books and e-Audio Books from the Pima County LibraryIf you like to read or like to listen to audio books probably the cheapest way to do it is through the public library. After you obtain a library card you can create an online account that can be used with OneClickDigital or OverDrive, but OneClickDigital seems to be less restrictive. Instructions on how to download and use each of these Apps is available on the Pima County Library website.I have been using OneClickDigital on my computer, notebook and phone. It is easy to use once you have your online account set up. The tricky part for me was knowing the library name to plug into the App, which is Pima County Public Library. Then you just need your user name and password to get things going.

It is very easy to search for e-books and e-audio books to check out and read or listen too. If you install on an Android you would need to check in the books and audio books from your computer (install OneClickDigital on our computer too) as you can’t check them in from an Android. I have no experience with iPads or other “i” devices.

If you have questions you can contact your library or Google online for OneClickDigital, OverDrive or check out the FAQ’s on www.library.pima.gov/.
