Catholic Corner –
Answer
It is St. Rose of Lima. St. Rose of
Lima was the first canonized saint
of the Americas. She became a
saint without ever leaving her
backyard. She established a
free clinic for the poor and
elderly in a room of her parent’s
house. Her parents wanted her
to marry a wealthy man to help
with their finances but she
wanted to enter the convent. To
help the family she stayed home
and sold her needlework and
flowers. She joined the Third
Order of St. Dominic and wore
the white habit and black veil of
the Dominican sisters. She built a
prayer hut in the backyard and
lived there until she died at the
age of 31. She was widely
known and loved by both rich
and poor.
