DEAR PARISHIONERS... “He was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white…” Mark 9:2-3 This weekend we hear the Gospel reading about the Transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up a mountain where they witness the amazing transfiguration of Jesus, their teacher. Time and again, Jesus teaches and inspires his disciples, and proves through many miraculous events that he is the Son of God – which God literally tells them at the transfiguration.
Teachers have the ability to inspire and motivate children, just as Jesus did. Educators in our schools and religious education programs light a fire in the hearts of our children so they might know and love Jesus. These teachers are all Building Disciples of Christ when they share the Gospel with children.
Thanks in part to the Bishop’s Appeal, we have meaningful programs to teach, resources to train educators, and quality curriculum. Through these programs we engage youth on their faith journey, so they too can become disciples of Christ! In the past year we have had 3 parishioners in the Emaus (lay ministry ) program for the diocese, one in formation for the diaconate, and a number of Catechists that have taken part in formation classes offered by the diocese.

On this the 2nd Sunday of Lent, we hear the account of the transfiguration of Jesus and are nourished by the body and blood of Christ, are we growing in our relationship to Jesus as the Son of God. Take a moment to look at your commitment for Lent. This year our bishop has challenged us to grow in prayer.
As a parish we have offered several things, our Parish mission, the book "Your God is too Boring", bible study, and much more. On Ash Wednesday we handed out 500 copies of the book. I ordered another 250 copies of "Your God is too Boring". I invite you to read a chapter a day, not just let it sit on your "to read pile", in order to grow in your understanding of Jesus, so as to enter into a deeper relationship with the Jesus who was, is and is to come. To open again our faith stories and hear how Jesus has been a part of our ancestors’ faith, and is a part of our lives today. Our God is not a boring God, our Lord is alive and well, we just need this season to open wider our minds and hearts to encounter Him right where we are and to set priorities that bring us together in prayer.

LENTEN SCRIPTURE STUDY
The topic of our Lenten scripture study is The Passion and Resurrection Narratives of Jesus.
A close reading of Jesus' passion and resurrection in all 4 gospels compares the particular insights and highlights of each of the 4 Gospel writers. Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection are the core of our faith. Examining these events, will challenge you to incorporate both the suffering of carrying the cross and the hope of the resurrection into daily living.
Study is currently being held on Thursdays, from now thru April 2 at 1 pm.
St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Oshkosh, WI, a vibrant parish with over 2800 families, is seeking a faith-filled Catholic to facilitate a comprehensive youth ministry program for students in grades 6-12. We desire an individual who can implement a total youth ministry program that focuses on the overall empowerment, participation and growth of young people as members of the Body of Christ. Responsibilities include: overseeing formation and training of a high school and middle school peer ministry, organize and promote summer youth mission trips, camps and conferences for students grades 6-12, coordinate regular youth gatherings to foster an active prayer life and sense of community in youth, and establish an active presence within the school, community, and religious education settings to evangelize youth. The ideal candidate will have a BA in religious education/theology or related field, be well organized, highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative. Safe Environment classes will be conducted for all RE students grades 1-10 on March 3/4. A letter went home
to families on February 17 with details.
First Eucharist parent/child classes are 4:15 and 5:30 on March 10/11. At least one parent must attend with
his/her child.
Reconciliation services will be held for RE students the weeks of March 17/18 and March 24/25. Check the
RE calendar for details on when your child will be attending. Parents are welcome to join us.
Bread Partner weekend will take place at all Masses on March 14/15.
First Eucharist Retreats and Enrollment are March 21/22, 3-6. At least one parent must attend with his/her
child.
Quarter 4 High School classes start this week, March 3/4. Please register if you have not done so.
Middle School CRS Rice Bowl Challenge! Middle school Religious Education students are invited to participate in the CRS Rice Bowl Challenge. From February 24th to March 25th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to bring in their pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and paper bills on Religious Education nights and deposit their money in a container designated for their grade level. The money they collect will be brought up by a middle school representative at Holy Thursday Mass on April 2.
The grade level that collects the most money will be rewarded with a root beer float party on April 14/15, but the
real reward is helping those with the greatest need. Together we can be the hands and feet of Christ to others
this Lent.

Reflecting on the Scriptures Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before
them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them
along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are
here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” --- Mark 9:2-7
There’s nothing quite like leaving Mass feeling refreshed, loved, and close to Jesus---it is most pronounced at Easter and
Christmas! I just want to stay right there. This is my faith and my God. And I am on the mountain top! It is soooo good to
be here!
Jesus Himself ascended to the mountaintop, experiencing the transfiguring love of the Father. For Jesus the Transfigura-
tion was the turning point in His life. Jesus was at the pinnacle of His ministry in preaching, healing, miracles. People were
drawn to Him; crowds followed Him. Coming down from the mountain, Jesus descended to the valley, to Jerusalem and
onto the road to Gethsemane until the culminating of His purpose---dying as payment for our sins at Calvary.
The Transfiguration gave Jesus a foretaste of the glory of defeating death in the Resurrection. Through the joy and loving
affirmation of God the Father at the top of the mountain, He found strength to endure the suffering of the cross in the
valley of death.
For Peter, James, and John, this was a magnificent, wondrous experience. They had never beheld their Lord and teacher
like this before. Peter, filled with emotion, proclaims, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let us build three tents here, one
for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But it is not to be.
The mountain-top experience of Peter, James, and John prepared them for their future trials. With Jesus they must descend
the mountain to the valley below and on to the garden of Gethsemane and Calvary. On Mount Tabor they didn’t want to
leave. In the Garden of Gethsemane they didn’t want to stay. I can identify with these apostles because in my mountain-top
experiences of joy and consolation, I also want to stay there forever. And then in the moments of discomfort and suffering,
I want to bolt. I forget that the Lord did not promise me an easy life---He promised to be with me at all times, in all
circumstances. The Lord asked the apostles if they could drink from the cup that He drinks from. So, in my love for Him,
can I lift the cup of suffering to my lips? Can I love Him unwaveringly as He loves me? Jesus is the way, the truth and
the life. Yes, He is the way, the way to be, the way to live, the way to follow, “If anyone will come after me, let him pick
up his cross daily and follow me.”
I have been to the mountain top with Jesus, where I wish to stay, to set up a tent, and never leave. But that’s not life. I love
to receive Jesus at Mass to be in communion, to stay in oneness with Jesus. I need Jesus to sustain me in the valleys of my
life. When I am with Jesus and experience His amazing Love for me, especially in the Mass, I, like Peter, wish to stay right
there, saying, “Lord, it is good for us to be here.” But I am sent, “The Mass is ended. Go in peace to love and serve the
Lord.” Yes, I am sent from the mountaintop to be the hands, feet, and heart of Christ in the world.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – It had been a mountaintop experience, Sue’s first retreat since high school. Since then she had started working in a downtown bank, met and married Jim (the ‘love of her life’) and had three beautiful children. She had been a Den Mother and a Brownie Leader. She had helped Jim set up his own business. She had even been promoted to Vice President at the bank where she worked. But in the middle of all the activity she had never been able to find time to go away by herself until last week. And it had been wonderful. She almost wished she could stay.
But now she was back home again. There were dirty dishes in the dishwasher and dirty towels in the tub, and a pizza box on the counter gave silent witness to the kind of meals her family had eaten while she was away. The kids were full of stories of baseball games and birthday parties and her husband was so happy to see her that, after a quick kiss hello, he promptly fell asleep on the couch. It had been a mountaintop experience, but now she was home. And there was no way she could ever explain to anyone what had happened to her.
Peter, James and John had a similar experience. They, too, had been to the mountaintop; and they, too, had wished they could stay. “Let us make three tents…”. Peter, the practical one, wanted to build something solid to mark the occasion. But Jesus knew better. Jesus knew that there was still work to be done in Jerusalem. And so the disciples came back down from the mountain, and “…they kept the matter to themselves.”
Sue quickly realized that, like Peter, James and John, she was never meant to stay on the mountaintop. Soon she was caught up again in the world of baseball games and birthday parties, home and job. She had encountered God on the mountaintop, but that wasn’t where God lived. And that wasn’t where she lived, either. God had called her back down from the mountain. Deacon Steve and Peg are married almost 43 years, have raised their three children, all who are married, and are now enjoying the
blessing of 18 grandchildren. Steve is a Pastoral Associate at the Catholic Tri-Parishes in Calumet County. Peg is the Family & Married Life Coordinator at the Diocese of Green Bay. They live in Kaukauna and are members of St. Katherine Drexel Parish.
There are a variety of ways to pray. Individuals have personal preferences. But what about praying as a couple. Married couples often express a desire to deepen their prayer life, or perhaps even wish to begin a prayer and don’t know how. Couples can discover ways to pray that each will find meaningful. The presentation will cover aspects of prayer and various ways to pray through stories, songs and scripture.
