I have also been in contact with Fr. Jason Blahnik. Catholic Campus Ministry at the Oshkosh Newman Center officially opens Sun., September 1 with the 7:00 pm Mass. The Oshkosh Newman Center serves the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, students and staff. It is located at 800 Elmwood Ave., which is behind Polk Library. The center is open:
Sun. 5pm-10pm, Mon.-Thurs., 9am-10pm, Fri., 9am-1pm. Masses: Sunday 7pm, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 11:35 am. Wednesday: 7 pm. Both Sunday and weekday Masses will be celebrated at the Newman Center.
I asked Fr. Jason how we might help him out: He said:
Pray for the success of the ministry, daily if possible. Encourage the UWO students in your life to attend the 7 pm Sunday Mass at the Newman Center.
Go to our website, www.newmanctr.org to see our programs and schedules. While on the website, fill out the form under “KEEP ME INFORMED” and/or register your UWO student. In other priest news, Fr. Bob Stegmann, who was pastor at St. Josaphat's before it merged into MBS, has moved from St. Joseph in Wautoma to St. Joseph in Sturgeon Bay and Sts. Peter and Paul in Institute. So if you remember Fr. Bob from his ministry in Oshkosh, you might visit him for mass on your next visit to Door County.
Have a safe and relaxing Labor day Weekend and let us remember each other in prayer as we move into our fall schedules.

SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME | 5
Reflecting on the Scriptures (Sirach 3:17-29, Psalm 68:4-11, Hebrews 12:18-24, Luke 14:1, 7-14)
My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself the more, the
greater you are, and you will find favor with God. -----Zirach 3:17-18
Humility. When I was younger, I thought humility was thinking little of myself. However, humility has so
much to do with how I think of myself in relation to others and to God. It flows from a heart of gratitude and a
desire to give to others. With a desire to love others well, “to love my neighbor as myself” is to step up to do
what God has gifted me with to serve, feed, clothe, and provide shelter for others in a way that does not draw
attention to self.
People who are humble know themselves and are able to deal with their own limitations and the limitations of
others, knowing that God is in their life, and they are not in charge, which brings real hope, inner peace, and
great energy. Sr. Joan Chittister, a Benedictine, writes, “People who are really humble know themselves to be
“earth or humus. There’s no haughtiness, no distance, no sarcasm, no put-downs, no airs of importance, or
disdain. No one is too above or beneath them. They are who they are, with about as much to give as to get, and
they know it. Humble people walk comfortably in every group. Because they’re at ease with themselves, they
can afford to be open with others.”
Attitude of the heart has everything to do with how I live my life. Everything I am and have is a gift from God
to be used by Him for building His Kingdom. So I am not “entitled” to anything in this world. When I serve
from a heart of gratitude, I intrinsically know that any good that I can do is also a gift from God. And at the end
of the day, when someone says, “You did a really good job at ________,” I point upwards and respond “Glad
you liked it; that (specific ability) is a gift from God to me for you to enjoy.” A heart filled with gratitude for all
that God has given results in humility. All praise and glory to you, O Lord. May I “conduct all of my affairs
with humility”.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (SIR. 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; LK. 14:1, 7-14)
This weekend we’re celebrating Labor Day and what St. Francis of Assisi called “the gift of work.” Our readings call us to humility, a virtue valuable in all times and places but perhaps especially in the workplace. For example, consider workers in fast food restaurants.
While fast food has traditionally offered good job opportunities for high school students and adults with entry-level skills, there also seems to be a growing trend toward hiring persons with physical and/or mental disabilities. The first time I noticed this was in a restaurant near my home. There was something distinctive about the young man sweeping the floor, a combination of characteristics common in individuals with Down Syndrome. But there was something else; there was a humble and genuine desire to be of service. “That table over there is clean. You can sit there, if you want.” Then he went on about his work of sweeping the floor.
And sweep it he did! That young man swept the floor like no floor has ever been swept before. He actually seemed to enjoy sweeping the floor. It was obvious that he took great pride in his work. But each time someone entered the restaurant he would stop sweeping, smile broadly, and with as much grace as if he was welcoming them into his own home, direct them to a clean table.
This weekend we celebrate workers and the right to expect a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s labor. Yet many people, caught in the trap of unemployment, still wait for an invitation to the banquet. For the young man in the fast food restaurant the invitation to move up to the higher position of an entry-level job offered freedom from the captivity of people’s prejudices and fears and the opportunity to live his life with dignity and respect. His presence reminds us that when we view our work as gift and perform it with humility even the most menial job can earn us the esteem of our companions at the table.
Are we as grateful as that young man for the gift of work?
