50TH JUBILEE FUN FACT: In September 1986, Cardinal Krol reassigned Fr. Cassidy because he was concerned about Fr. Cassidy’s health. Fr. Cassidy, not wanting to leave but remembering his promise of obedience, decided that he had to accept the decision. He was replaced by Reverend Joseph T. Kane.

Dear Friends,

As we enter Ordinary Time once again, both today and next Sunday the Gospel readings describe Jesus calling his disciples. In today’s passage from Saint John, John the Baptist leads two of his disciples to Jesus. Jesus invites them to follow him and they do, choosing not only to remain with him but also to invite others in turn. In the first reading, Samuel is called to serve the Lord and he too responds affirmatively. It is clear that the scriptural message for us this week is that we too have been called to follow Jesus closely and to invite others to know him as well. The question to be answered this week is simply this – do I have the courage to let others know that I love and follow Jesus? And even more profoundly – do I have the courage to invite others to follow Him?

On Monday we honor the memory and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. For many this is a holiday which has service to the broader community as a component of its celebration. Dr. King’s legacy is the challenge to eradicate from our society all prejudices and foster respect and freedom for everyone. For anyone who is free on Monday from work or school, perhaps reaching out to another in need is the perfect way honor this challenge.

On Friday of this week, the annual March for Life will take place in Washington, DC. This annual march is the gathering of Pro-Life people from all over the country and from all different faith traditions who allow their voices to be heard in defense of all human life, unborn and born. Our parish community will be represented once again this year. Although not everyone has an opportunity to attend the march, on that day we can all do something in defense of life. We can pray for the safety of the marchers, we can attend Mass and pray for the unborn, we can make a contribution to a Pro-life organization, we can visit a lonely or housebound neighbor. We can all do something – and this will make a difference in the world, and in US!

Last Saturday, January 6th, in the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, Archbishop Chaput presided at the Annual Mass and Award Ceremony for Parish Religious Education Programs conducted throughout the archdiocese. This year our parish celebrates four members recognized for their service in our program: MRS. LORI MURPHY received the Our Lady of Guadalupe Award for 15 years of service as a catechist, PETER and ANNE MARIE VREELAND and JOSLYN TOMLINSON received the Saint John Neumann Award in recognition of their 5 year participation in our PREP program. We congratulate them and thank them for their dedication to the ministry of Religious Education here in Saint Robert’s parish.

In this bulletin you will see the results of the Christmas collection. This year’s collection was more than in 2016. As you know, the Christmas collection is one of the three major collections of the year for the work of the parish community. I once again wish to express my gratitude to all of you for your generosity, not only at Christmas, but throughout the year. It is your sacrifices which allows our parish to continue the work of Jesus in today’s world.

Please keep our third grade students in your prayers this week as they prepare for First Penance next Saturday. We are all reminded by their preparation of the great mercy we can all find in this loving encounter with Jesus in this great sacrament of Penance.

Next weekend we also welcome back Deacon Luke for the final semester of his diaconate internship. Deacon Luke will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lincoln in May. We need to hold him close in prayer as he prepares for this life-long commitment of service to the People of God.

May Saint Robert Bellarmine inspire us to work each day for the greater glory of God!

With prayers,

of O

HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION: Our HSA meeting will be held next Wednesday evening beginning at 7pm in the parish meeting room. The HSA heard that Thursday night is not always a good one for some parents – so our meeting is on Wednesday. We changed the venue to give the meeting a different flavor. Our speaker is Ms. Alissa DeVito, Technology Coach of the Archdiocese. Alissa will speak about parenting the age of social media. KELLY’S CLASSROOM!: What a wonderful experience! Bob Kelly got a taste of SJR hospitality last Wednesday with cheers, smiles, and signs. We hope our families will enjoy the pictures posted on our school Facebook page.

BINGO BONANZA: Hurry, Hurry Hurry!!!! Only 70 tickets left for this fun night. Don’t wait or you will be too late! See flyer in this week’s communication.

FLY, EAGLES, FLY! : To get into the spir it of the weekend, everyone will have an Eagle dress down day on Friday. (I told the children that they will have an Eagles dress down day every Friday – as long as the Eagles continue in the playoffs!)

JUST A THOUGHT: “Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude.” This quote from Dr. Martin Luther King gives me an idea about how to make our day on Monday one of service. Who did I need to forgive? From whom should I ask forgiveness?

It is always good to stop and reflect on our journey of discipleship, a journey

of coming to know Jesus more fully, being more attracted to him, following

him more faithfully, even when the cost is great. What does that cost look

like? We might have to walk away from the watercooler at work to avoid

gossip. We might lose friends when we speak up for the Church’s teachings.

We might be shunned for living out our gospel values.

What has been the cost of faithfully following Jesus in your life? The Calling of Saints Peter

University of Notre Dame Vision Summer Program vision.nd.edu

Dear friends, My name is Maria Corr. I am a parishioner and cantor at St. Robert’s and a current sophomore at the University of Notre Dame studying English and Theology. I’m writing to invite you to join me on campus this summer at Notre Dame Vision. Vision is a faith conference that assists participants in strengthening their own spiritual lives through large group experiences, interactive small group work, speeches, music, Masses and sacrament services. Vision is open to all high school students (including those entering the 9th grade, and those who will graduate in spring 2018) from across the country. These students will

live in dorms and eat at dining halls to ensure they receive the “full college experience” while exploring their faith at one of the world’s best Catholic universities. During the one-week session, high school students are under the guidance of ND undergraduates (myself, included), known as Mentors-In-Faith. Mentors are trained to lead students in small group conversations and activities inspired by national speakers’ witness talks, as well as their own stories in faith development. This summer, Vision runs over the course of four one-week conferences: June 18-June 22; Jun 25-June 29; July 9-July 13; July 16-July 20. Aside from the high school conference, Vision also offers programs for youth/liturgical music ministers, pastors and religious educators ages 18+. Please visit the website vision.nd.edu for more information on these conferences, as well as pricing, transportation, and the application process. Personally, I found high school to be a pivotal time in the development of my spiritual life. It wasn’t until my senior year that I truly discovered a sense of personal responsibility for practicing my faith. My time at Notre Dame has helped me to further understand the importance of active conversation in the exploration of God’s call for us to live fully and faithfully. I truly believe Vision is an ideal outlet for high school students to reflect on and pray about all aspects of life with one another. I highly recommend taking advantage of this perfect opportunity to question, share, and learn from peers in personal faith-formation. If you have any questions about this program/application, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. I hope you have a wonderful New Year! God bless & Go Irish, Maria Corr
