A big thank you to everyone who helped in any way with the car raffle. To Bruno
Barillari who, with the Parish Council decided upon the car; to Jeanne Taylor who coordinated
the ticket booth, to our staff who handled everything behind the scenes; to Adele Garafolo and
Beverly Albanese who faithfully counted and reported on the ticket sales weekly; to the many
volunteers who, with great devotion, sold tickets in the ticket booth; the volunteers who folded
all the ticket stubs; to Mario Marrano who worked tirelessly for the last several weeks with Eddie O’Connor and
Anne Marie Gillespie selling tickets. Thanks to you our parishioners and our guests who returned their sold
tickets. Due to the hard work and support of many I’m thrilled to tell you we made a profit of $42,270.00.
Congratulations to the winner of the car Susan Ricciardi.
Last Friday evening I was delighted to be invited to a celebration at the Metropolitan Room in Newark to
celebrate the retirement of the Newark Fire Chief, John Centanni. John is an amazing man. He and his family
are active parishioners. His life is centered on faith, family, and dedication to duty. We wish John well in his
retirement. Congratulations John and God bless you.
As you are aware, last Thursday afternoon our thirty-six pilgrims returned from Italy. We had an
amazing pilgrimage and we were blessed and privileged to be at many sites and holy places to follow in the
footsteps of the saints and to receive graces and blessings from their example of Catholic living.
Many months ago Alex encouraged me to write a letter to the Holy Father asking to concelebrate a private
Mass with him in honor of my 25th
Anniversary to the priesthood. I mailed in the letter and never heard back
from the Vatican. On Sunday, October 16th
, I had finished celebrating a beautiful Mass at the Basilica of St.
Francis when my cell phone rang with a wonderful invitation from the Vatican. I was invited to concelebrate Mass
with the Holy Father on Tuesday, October 18th
. My first thought – I did not bring my best suit or my best alb and
in fact, I didn’t have my cassock. Not to be daunted our group bought me a beautiful alb which I will always
treasure. I borrowed a cassock and I got my suit cleaned and pressed in a half an hour which is an amazing feat in
Italy! On the Tuesday morning the Swiss Guard, having checked my paperwork, allowed me through and escorted
me to Casa Santa Marta. Nine priests joined me. One was Argentinean, the other Vietnamese, the rest were
priests from the Archdiocese of Rome. About forty lay people attended the Mass. It was a beautiful liturgy and
after Mass the Holy Father spent several minutes with each of us. He congratulated me on my anniversary. We
talked a little about World Youth Day in Poland and he asked me to pray for him. I sent him greetings from St.
Rose and from the Diocese of Paterson.
I don’t have enough room to write about the entire pilgrimage but I will begin this week and complete my
details of the pilgrimage next week. We arrived at Venice Airport at 3:00pm, after our flight which took us from
Newark to Frankfurt and then a short 1 ½ hour flight to Venice. We met our tour operator Titiana and our bus
driver Gianni and we drove the forty-five minutes to Padua. We toured the Shrine of St. Anthony and I celebrated
Mass at the Basilica of St. Anthony. At the end of Mass, three of our pilgrims gave witness to their desire to visit
the Shrine of St. Anthony. By 7:00pm we arrived at our hotel in Padua and enjoyed dinner at a charming local
restaurant. We then returned to our hotel exhausted but happy and slept like babies. Next week I will complete
the details of this amazing journey of faith.
Deacon Andrew and Alex send their prayers and greetings to all of you. I’m happy to report they’re doing
very well at the North American Seminary

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER
The children in the Pre-Kindergarten class were learning
how to make a graph. We asked the children what their
favorite color was and we created a graph out of these
results. Another group activity that the children always
find exciting was building! Look at the fabulous
structure they created while using wooden blocks of all
shapes and sizes.
The children in the Preschool classes learned about
spiders. They played several games including throwing
cotton balls onto a spider web to see what it was like
when an insect flies into a spider web and cannot get out.
They discussed many facts about spiders and the
differences between spiders and insects. The children
were also visited by a parent who is a fireman. He
showed the children all of the gear a fireman needs to be
safe in a fire. The children enjoyed trying on all of the
equipment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with
us!
For all those who will not be at the December 11th
Jubilee luncheon, the following weekend, December
17th and 18th, there will be a meet and greet with
refreshments after every Mass and an opportunity to
extend your congratulations to Fr. Owen.

Sacrament of the Sick / Hospital Visits At St. Rose we are strongly committed to the spiritual care of the sick. Because of privacy laws, hospitals and nursing homes are not allowed to release the patient’s religious affiliation.
