TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts. (Jeremiah 31:31-34) or Ezekiel 37:12-14. Psalm - Create a clean heart in me, O God (Psalm 51) or Psalm 130. Second Reading - Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him (Hebrews 5:7-9) or Romans 8:8-11. Gospel - If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit (John 12:20-33) or John 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]. LIVING GOD’S WORD

Loving God, give us a new heart in these final days of Lent, a heart that carries within it your loving imprint, that we may always know your will and yield to it, even when it calls for a dying of some kind. In such dying, may we trust that you will bring forth new life.

SAVED BY GOD'S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant,

God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ.

Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD One of the earliest pictures of Jesus I can

remember portrayed him at prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. I still see his hands, clasped tight. They spoke to me of an inner struggle long before I knew about his words, “Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will” (Mark 14:36). More than any other scene in the Gospels, this one brought home what it meant to say Jesus was truly man.

Today’s Gospel has been called John’s version of the agony in the garden. The word agony (agonia in Greek) means struggle, and we can hear the struggle in Jesus’ awareness that “the hour” he has spoken of before in John’s Gospel, beginning at Cana, has finally arrived. It is the hour of his being lifted up—the hour of both his glory and his crucifixion. It is why he came into the world, and yet we hear him say, “I am troubled.” We hear him wrestling with himself, asking for release from the hour, but then recognizing that it holds “the purpose for which I came.”

Hebrews affirms this when it says “he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence” (5:7). He was able to bear the suffering and become the source of eternal salvation for all who listen to him and follow in his steps.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the

interior anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Gethsemane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means "olive press," and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can't be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured--knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a "gethsemane," and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss.

Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jerusalem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or "The Cry of the Lord," built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites.

ST. JOSEPH - MARCH 18

Everything we know about the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus comes from Scripture and that has seemed too little for those who made up legends about him.

We know he was a carpenter, a working man, for the skeptical Nazarenes ask about Jesus, "Is

this not the carpenter's son?" (Matthew 13:55). He wasn't rich for when he took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified he offered the sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of pigeons, allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb (Luke 2:24).

Despite his humble work and means, Joseph came from a royal lineage. Luke and Matthew disagree some about the details of Joseph's genealogy but they both mark his descent from David, the greatest king of Israel (Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38). Indeed the angel who first tells Joseph about Jesus greets him as "son of David," a royal title used also for Jesus.

We know Joseph was a compassionate, caring man. When he discovered Mary was pregnant after they had been betrothed, he knew the child was not his but was as yet unaware that she was carrying the Son of God. He knew women accused of adultery could be stoned to death, so he resolved to send her away quietly to not expose her to shame or cruelty. However, when an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him, 20 "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins," he did as the angel told him and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:19-25).

When the angel came again to tell him that his family was in danger, he immediately left everything he owned, all his family and friends, and fled to a strange country with his young wife and the baby. He waited in Egypt without question until the angel told him it was safe to go back (Matthew 2:13-23).

We know Joseph loved Jesus. His one concern was for the safety of this child entrusted to him. Not only did he leave his home to protect Jesus, but upon his return settled in the obscure town of Nazareth out of fear for his life. When Jesus stayed in the Temple we are told Joseph (along with Mary) searched with great anxiety for three days for him (Luke 2:48). We also know that Joseph treated Jesus as his own son for over and over the people of Nazareth say of Jesus, "Is this not the son of Joseph?" (Luke 4:22)

We know Joseph respected God. He followed God's commands in handling the situation with Mary and going to Jerusalem to have Jesus circumcised and Mary purified after Jesus' birth. We are told that he took his family to Jerusalem every

year for Passover, something that could not have been easy for a working man.

Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph probably had died before Jesus entered public ministry.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the Apocryphal Date for Joseph's birth is 90 BC in Bethlehem and the Apocryphal Date of his death is July 20, AD 18 in Nazareth.

Joseph is the patron saint of the dying because, assuming he died before Jesus' public life, he died with Jesus and Mary close to him, the way we all would like to leave this earth.

Joseph is also patron saint of the Universal Church, families, fathers, expectant mothers (pregnant women), travelers, immigrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers, and working people in general.

We celebrate two feast days for Joseph: March 19 for Joseph the Husband of Mary and May 1 for Joseph the Worker. March 19 has been the most commonly celebrated feast day for Joseph, and it wasn't until 1955 that Pope Pius XII established the Feast of "St. Joseph the Worker" to be celebrated on May 1. This is also May Day (International Workers' Day) and believed to reflect Joseph's status as the patron of workers.

Loving and ever-present God, we believe that your grace is sufficient for all things. Comfort us anew by your presence. Allow that in our weakness we may be made strong, in our grief, consoled, and in our ignorance, wise. Protect and guide us that we may know the way to take and that at each crossroad of life we may see the right path to choose. Safeguard us by your power, uphold us your kindness, and warm us by your love. By your divine grace help us to do what is right, to act courageously, to love our neighbors, to forgive our enemies. By your grace, bless us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Począwszy od piątej niedzieli Wielkiego Postu, Kościół coraz bardziej koncentruje uwagę na tajemnicy krzyża. Czyni to jednak nie po to, byśmy współczuli cierpiącemu Jezusowi i litowali się nad Nim, ale byśmy przyjęli owoce Jego męki i śmierci. Jezus zapowiada swoją mękę jako wywyższenie, gdyż to właśnie w krzyżu nastąpił tryumf nad szatanem i jego dziełami oraz najpełniej objawiła się Boża miłość do każdego człowieka. Jeśli wierzymy tej miłości i pozwalamy się jej ogarnąć, stajemy się zdolni do tego, by rozpoznać i ukochać doświadczenie krzyża również w naszym życiu. A wtedy będziemy w nim widzieć już nie samo cierpienie, ale drogę, która przez umieranie dla siebie prowadzi nas do wydania plonu na życie wieczne.

GODZINA CIERPIENIA Całe życie doczesne jest nastawione na

posiadanie. Szczęście łączy się ściśle z posiadaniem. Im więcej skarbów posiadam, tym bardziej jestem szczęśliwy. Nie chodzi tu o pieniądze czy majątek. Chodzi o to, by mieć dobrych rodziców, mieć dobrą żonę, mieć dobre dzieci, mieć zdrowie, mieć

przyjaciół. To są moi rodzice, moja żona, moje dzieci, moje zdrowie. Moje...

Tymczasem świat, który objawia Jezus, oparty jest na innej zasadzie. Żyję, by innych uszczęśliwiać. Jestem dla kogoś. Uszczęśliwię zaś w zależności od bogactwa swego serca. Im więcej miłości jest w moim sercu, tym bardziej potrafię żyć dla innych.

Życie chrześcijanina polega na świadomym przestawieniu się z tego, by mieć, na to, by kochać, by być dla innych. To zaś jest nierozerwalnie połączone z cierpieniem. Kiedy tracę mojego ojca, me serce krwawi, kiedy umiera moje dziecko, cierpię, bo umiera część mego serca. Utrata tego, co moje, jest zawsze połączona z cierpieniem, a im większa to dla mnie wartość, tym większe cierpienie.

Oczami doczesności dostrzegamy w tym procesie jedynie stratę. Buntuje się serce, często bezsilne, widząc bezsens tej straty. Czuje się ograbione ze szczęścia. Jeśli jednak potrafi spojrzeć oczami wiary, dostrzeże w tym procesie nie stratę, lecz wymianę. To właśnie ma na uwadze Jezus, gdy mówi: „Jeżeli ziarno pszenicy wpadłszy w ziemię nie obumrze, zostanie tylko samo, ale jeśli obumrze, przynosi plon obfity. Ten, kto kocha swoje życie na tym świecie, straci je, a kto nienawidzi swego życia na tym świecie, zachowa je na życie wieczne”. Pszeniczne ziarno jest tylko obrazem potrzeby obumierania, by zyskać formę życia doskonalszą. Komentarz zaś Jezusa do tego obrazu kładzie nacisk na „swoje” życie. Chrystusowi chodzi o to, że człowiek, który podchodzi do życia doczesnego jako do posiadania, traci to życie. Nie straci, ale już traci. Kto zaś nienawidzi posiadania życia, czyli składa je w ofierze, traktuje jako narzędzie do ubogacenia innych, ten je zachowa na życie wieczne. Jezus nie mówi, że otrzyma je w wieczności, ale to życie, które zamienił tu na ziemi w akt miłości, staje się życiem wiecznym.

Zbliżając się do Chrystusowego krzyża, trzeba odkryć ten najmądrzejszy sposób zamiany życia doczesnego w wieczne. To zgoda na rezygnację z przywłaszczania sobie życia, uznawania go za swoje a przeznaczenie go dla innych. Takie podejście budzi lęk. Sam Jezus się do tego przyznaje: „Teraz dusza moja doznała lęku i cóż mam powiedzieć? Ojcze, wybaw Mnie od tej godziny. Nie, właśnie dlatego przyszedłem na tę godzinę”.

I w naszym życiu zbliża się godzina ofiary, cierpienie syna, męża, kalectwo dziecka, alkoholizm ojca. Godzina obumierania tego, co najbardziej nasze. Trzeba wówczas spojrzeć na obumierające

ziarno pszenicy i oczami wiary zobaczyć kłos, liczący dziesiątki wspaniałych nowych ziaren.

Wielki Post wzywa do refleksji nad tajemnicą cierpienia i śmierci. Jezus nie odsłania tej tajemnicy, lecz wchodząc w nią zapewnia nas, że można cierpieniu i śmierci nadać sens. On sam to uczynił przez mękę i zmartwychwstanie. Obecnie zachęca nas, byśmy odważnie, pokonując lęk, podjęli godzinę naszego bolesnego doświadczenia. A jeśli ona jeszcze dla nas nie nadeszła, miejmy odwagę stanąć blisko człowieka, który ją przeżywa. Taka obecność w chwili doświadczenia umacnia i ułatwia trudną zamianę tego, co doczesne, na to, co wieczne.
