Parish Mission Statement

We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!

The word “pastoral” comes from the Latin word pastor meaning “shepherd.” The first and most important role of those who follow the GOOD Shepherd is to be pastoral. We hear the word “pastoral” thrown about in our faith community – pastoral council, pastor, pastoral assistant, pastoral care – yet we some how have the misconception that it means “official” and “authoritative” in the sense of hierarchical and administrative position. The true mean of “pastoral” is “shepherding” – doing what is best for the flock: leading, protecting, feeding, comforting, and uniting the sheep. Yes, at times the shepherd must take decisive control in order to safeguard the flock, but it must be done in a loving and caring manner, which edifies and builds up the whole flock or a single member of the flock who needs that edification for the GOOD of the whole flock. Sometimes the shepherd has to strike out at the forces which are seeking to attack the flock. The role of shepherding is first and foremost that of the pastor of a community. Yet as the pastor models the caring and nourishing qualities of the GOOD Shepherd, the rest of the flock must share in the role of shepherding each other. The key quality of all shepherding must be compassion – a willingness to “suffer with” the other. Each of us is called to share in the pastoral ministry of the flock of the Lord Jesus – in various ways and to the various persons whom the Good Shepherd has entrusted to our care. The personal question/action for today: How have I experienced the pastoral care of the Good Shepherd in my life? Which individual(s) has/have been instrumental in allowing me to feel the compassion and love of GOD? Have I shown my appreciation to them for their pastoral concern? To whom am I been called to show pastoral care? Have I taken seriously my calling to shepherd those who have been entrusted to my care? Do I seek to take time to go away and be with the Master-Teacher so that I might become a more renewed shepherd to those whom I am called to serve? Meditate on the Responsorial Psalm23. The Lord is my Shepherd. Have a blessed weekend. Father Tom

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2

Aaaahhhh…..Summer!

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” We read these words of Jesus during summer in the northern hemisphere—vacation time for many. Summer is not just a great time to rest physically but also to be recharged spiritually. Two points: the spirituality of summer and the spirituality of rest.

Spirituality of Summer. Liturgically, summer is ordinary time. But summer offers lots of opportunities for us to grow spiritually. Summer is that time of the year when we shed layers of clothing and spend time outdoors. This is the time to reconnect with natural light, to feel the touch of the sun on our skin, just like Snoopy. Many go swimming and enjoy the feel of cold lake water or warm salty sea water on our skin. Hiking gives us the pleasure of not only smelling different wildflowers but also listening to the sound of nature—all kinds of birds, insects…Even if we are on staycation, we can still feast on the smell and taste of barbecue, relish the sound of children playing around (while they are still around), of family and friends reconnecting with each other. Years ago, we looked forward to the taste of summer fruits like watermelon. These days, because of the globalization of the market, these fruits are available to us year round. Still, summer offers us the chance to feast on our senses—touch, smell, sight, listening, taste. Summer is a great time to exercise our senses, to pay attention to the grand display of God’s goodness in nature. Summer is an appropriate time to be mindful of God’s insane generosity to us through the environment, family and friends. However, there is a caveat here: we have to stay away from those LED screens, otherwise summer becomes just another time to ‘deteriorate’ like Sally Brown. Tethered to our mobile devices, we miss all these summer delights that could teach us to live in the moment. Then, we stumble back into work or everyday life still operating on autopilot. No wonder we want another vacation. Years ago, when I was still working as an electrical engineer, I used to go to this Japanese-owned factory for some product testing. It was interesting to watch how the engineers operated the machines. Rather than silently going over a check-list of steps, they would also point and loudly describe what they were doing. Later on, I learned that the practice is called Shisa Kanko (which literally means checking and calling) a mindfulness exercise that comes from Zen Buddhism. Shisa Kanko prevents the workers from operating on autopilot which can lead to errors. Shisa Kanko is some-thing we can do not just this summer but on a regular basis to help us grow in mindfulness. I even do that on my regular walks (as long as there is nobody around, otherwise someone might wonder why I’m talking to myself)—pointing, calling the name of things I notice… This summer, we ask for the grace of mindfulness, of paying more attention to God’s superb show of goodness around us. We don’t want to be scatterbrained shepherds who, because of our lack of mindfulness, scatter our flock. Today’s first reading warns us about that. Be also warned that increase mindfulness can also lead us to notice the suffer-ing of others. In today’s gospel, because of Jesus’ mindfulness, he saw the scattered crowd, and his heart was moved with pity. Spirituality of Rest. In a consumer society like ours, there is a tendency to value the laborer only as “a tool of production”, only in terms of the laborer’s contribution to the company’s profit or rate of return. We can absorb or internalize this corporate practice of valuing the worker as a “tool of production” or an instrument for profit. We come to value ourselves mainly in terms of the work we do, or in terms of how much we produce or earn. In a very competitive world we can be misled in defining ourselves with our work or be inordinately attached to our work or the power or influence that comes with the work. Rest allows us to step back from everyday concerns, reflect on our life and on God’s ways. The gospels teach us that work or merit is not everything. Let us learn from the older brother of the Prodigal Son who had slaved away year after year (never taking a vacation) in his father’s company. Yet the father made more fuss of the return of his good-for-nothing brother. Unfair! ‘Unfair!’ was also the complaint of those who worked twelve hours but received the same wage as those who worked for only one hour. Think of the anger of the Pharisees who rigorously fasted and observed all the religious laws only to be told by Jesus, “the first shall be last and the last shall be first.” Imagine the resentment not just of the Pharisees but even some of the disciples of Jesus when they heard of Jesus’ prom-ise to the criminal on the cross, “Today, you will be with me in Paradise.” Indeed, merit is not everything. God’s ways are not our ways. St. Paul in today’s second reading reminds us, “He is our peace!” “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Fr. H

Praying with today’s readings:

I ask for the grace of increase mindfulness. I ask for the grace of rest—physically and spiritually.

St. Teresa of Avila Columbarium

and Memorial Garden

We are considering the construction of Phase 3 for our parish columbarium and so need to know the level of interest among our parishioners. The columbarium is available to parishioners and immediate family only. Both Phase 1 and 2 are fully reserved at this point. Currently we have about ten parishioners ready to commit to Phase 3. If there are an additional ten who are ready to commit to the purchase of a niche, we may be ready to move ahead. If you are interested please contact Roland in the parish office for more details soon. Timing is important if we will be able to construct before the heavy winter months.

The Religious Education

Department will have registration meetings for First Year and Second

Year First Communion and Confirmation preparation classes on August 14th, 16th and 22nd at 5:30pm. Registration fees are $60.00 per child. You only need to attend one of the registration dates. Please bring a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate. Thank you!

Mass intentions are now $10.00. Please come to the front office and list your intentions for your loved ones and those who are in need.
