ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK

The parable of today’s Gospel is often called the parable of the workers in the vineyard, it is better

called the parable of the merciful owner because the focus is on the owner of the vineyard, not the workers. Five sets of workers are sent to work in the vineyard at five different times: those workers who were sent at dawn are promised the “usual daily wage,” those sent at nine a.m. are promised a “just” wage, and since the owner “did likewise” to those sent at noon and three p.m., we can assume he promised them the same. Those who did not start work until a mere hour before quitting time seem to have been promised nothing as they are merely told to “go into my vineyard.” As we all remember the ending of the story: not only are the latecomers paid first, but they are paid the same amount as those laboring since dawn. Is it not unfair that the latecomers who worked for only one hour should be paid as much as those who had been working all day? The answer is that those working all day received justice, while those working less than a full day received charity, which goes beyond and perfects justice. So long as all are treated justly, why should we complain if some are treated with generosity? And of course, the parable is not about just wages at all, but about salvation. In fact, salvation is always God’s gift. We really cannot earn it, no matter how deeply we secretly think we can and must. Whether one serves God all one’s life as a missionary in voluntary poverty or one accepts the Gospel on one’s deathbed after a life of sin, eternal life is always an unmerited gift from God. Without the grace of God won for us by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, not even the best among us would go to heaven. At Mass we praise Christ as the One “from whom all good things come”; this includes any good we are able to do. And we acknowledge that the desire to serve God “is itself His gift.” St. Augustine taught that God gives us prevenient grace, which is the ability to accept God’s offer of salvation. When we find ourselves taking pride in our good deeds we should remember that in truth, apart from such grace we can do nothing. At times we are tempted to ask ourselves what the point of being good is, or what the point of spending our lives “in the vineyard” may be. Because of Jesus Christ’s unmatchable response to the Father’s grace, those made in Christ can now possess total freedom from one of the greatest anxieties ever to afflict humanity, the fear of death. St. Paul, for example, states in today’s second reading that he cares not whether he lives or he dies, so long as he is united with Christ, he is full of peace and joy. Such are the wages of all who serve the Lord faithfully. Father John Grimm

Our Special Prayer Intention this Week: That God forgive our lethargy, inattentiveness, lack of prayer and sacrifice for our Christian brothers and sisters daily being slaughtered for their faith; we pray to the Lord…

Please pray for the sick of the parish and their family members particularly; Frances Springer, George Hebert, David Hahn and Denise Reilly. Please also con-

tinue to pray for the men and women who are serving in the mili-tary in Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world.

Prayer For Priests and Religious

Almighty and eternal God, in your unfailing love you provide ministers for your Church. We pray for those whom you call to serve the Church as priests. Inspire in them a generous response. Grant them courage and vision to serve your people. May their lives and service call your people to respond to the presence of your Spirit among us that, faithful to the Gospel and hope of Jesus the Christ, we may: announce glad tidings to the poor proclaim liberty to captives, set prisoners free and renew the face of the earth. Amen.

Life in service of the Lord is never dull, and often challenging. Consider life as a priest, deacon, or religious sister. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Walter Szczesny at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories at www.buffalovocations.org.

25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME * SEPTEMBER 21, 2014

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday in churches across the country. Many Catholics haves used the word “catechism”

for years and they know it has something to do with the Church’s teachings. It means to “echo” or “resound”. As Catholics, we try to bring the Church’s teachings to the world. A catechists is one who teaches in the name of the Church.

St. Teresa’s Women’s Guild will be holding their Annual Country Craft Show on Saturday, October

4th from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm. There will be a variety of new crafters so come and browse for gifts or decorating ideas. Take a chance at our raffles, buy some delicious baked goods or sit and relax and enjoy lunch and dessert. Pie tins will be available in the vestibule of the church next weekend.

The Annual Campaign for Catholic Education will be conducted in our parish next weekend. 100% of your Campaign gift stays right here in our parish, providing much needed resources to support our religious education programs. You can make a difference. Please continue to be generous.

Bishop Malone will bring the gift of the Holy Spirit in the form of the Sacrament of Confirmation to St. Teresa’s on Sunday, October 26th. If you are an eligible adult and wish to be confirmed, please check in with the parish office so we can make the opportunity come true.

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities in Williamsville would like to thank everyone who donated to the parish picnic raffle back

in August. A check for $500 was sent to them to be used for the Timau Mission in Kenya. Sister Bea Leising and Sister Joanne Gangloff are in Timau working at a compound that includes a church, rectory, 10 small mission praying stations, schools, a center for the aging and a food distribution center.

Couples celebrating a Milestone Wedding Anniversary this year are invited to a Special Mass celebrating you on Sunday, November 16th at 3:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. If you are celebrating a 50th, 60th or 70th wedding anniversary and would like to take part in this special Mass, please call the Rectory and let Msgr. or Melissa know as soon as possible.

The Wisdom of St. Paul (1 Corinthians 13:8-9, 13) Love never fails. Prophecies will cease, tongues will be silent, knowledge will pass away. Our knowledge is imperfect and our prophesying is imperfect. There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love.

Hymns to sing as you whip along the highway at: 55 mph . . . .God Will Take Care of You

salvation.
