A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Dear Friends, While I was away on vacation, a final decision was rendered by Cardinal Cupich on our Renew My Church process. Please read the following release from the Archdiocese of Chicago below: Renew My Church: Palatine Heights Grouping Update - January 18, 2019

The Renew My Church ‘Palatine Heights’ grouping includes Misión San Juan Diego, St. Theresa, and St. Thomas of Villanova.

Discernment Process The grouping began as the ‘PalMeadow Heights’ grouping with Misión San Juan Diego, St. Theresa, St. Thomas of Villanova, and St. Colette. When reviewing the recommendation for the original grouping in November 2018, the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council raised questions that required additional discussion and discernment.

Based on further consultation with the parish pastors and administrators of the grouping, Bishop Alberto Rojas decided that it is best for St. Colette Parish to join a separate grouping that includes Our Lady of the Wayside Parish, St. James Parish, and St. Edna Parish in Arlington Heights, as well as St. Mary Parish in Buffalo Grove. That grouping will engage in the discernment process at a future time. With the grouping now formed by Misión San Juan Diego, St. Theresa, and St. Thomas of Villanova, the grouping team leaders met twice and held a town hall at each parish to review and respond to the original questions raised by the Presbyteral Council in November.

Decision Over the course of the past several weeks, Cardinal Cupich, Bishop Alberto Rojas, and the Archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council met to discuss the additional input gathered during the extended period of discernment. Based upon those discussions and prayerful consideration, a final decision was made regarding the parish structures.

• Misión San Juan Diego, St. Theresa, and St. Thomas of Villanova will each continue in their current canonical structures. • As expressed by the grouping’s leadership as an important step moving forward, the parishes will explore continued space

sharing and enhanced collaboration. • Cardinal Cupich has asked that the parish pastors submit a report by July 2020 detailing the progress they have made on

collaboration, including space sharing, and the challenges they still face at that time as a group and as individual parishes. As previously communicated in September 2018 by the pastors of the grouping, with regards to schools, it was determined that the schools be given a period of two years – subject to hitting certain minimum benchmarks – to pursue independent plans for growth and vitality after which the schools will come together again (in October 2020) to discuss the best way forward. In 2020, the new process to determine a way forward for schools would allow ample time for the communities of all of the parishes to provide input. As always, the goal of any future discussions of our schools is to make sure we provide a strong and sustainable Catholic education option for our collective communities.

Next Steps As St. Thomas of Villanova and Misión San Juan Diego will each have an open pastorate and be in the pool for pastor assignments effective July 1, 2019, the Archdiocese’s Priest Placement Board will work with each community to identify the gifts and characteristics needed for the pastor of each parish. A consultation meeting involving parishioners will be held at each parish. St. Thomas of Villanova’s consultation will be on February 5. Misión San Juan Diego’s consultation will be February 7. More details about these meetings will be shared through each parish soon.

Moving into the coming months, all parishes of the grouping will embark upon the next phase of the renewal process to become a stronger, more sustainable presence for the future capable of reaching more people in their work of making disciples of Jesus Christ. This decision by Cardinal Cupich concludes this phase of the Renew My Church process. Our three parishes in the grouping will now continue the mission of working together to discern ways that we can help each other in the future both in terms of sharing space and ministries as well as taking on the priorities of evangelization and the discernment of vocations to the priesthood, permanent diaconate and the religious life. In addition, we will be examining how best to strengthen our schools in the future. Enjoy the week and God bless you all.

The Prayer Challenge Ready for the next challenge?

"From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their (the angels) watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Chris an life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united to God."

- Catechism of the Catholic Church; 336 During the month of February, your challenge, should you accept it, is to pray to your guardian angel every day. Add this challenge to the Grace Before Meals challenge! Each day, say grace before each meal AND pray to your guardian angel. Take The Prayer Challenge and watch your

spiritual life grow...

The Prayer Challenge February 2019

Challenge #2: Prayer to Your Guardian Angel

Say this prayer daily to greet your personal guardian angel and honor the work that the angel does on your behalf. A guardian angel keeps you safe, prays for you, guides you, and helps you through tough mes. This prayer is not just for children. You are asking for the inspira on to be recep ve to the heavenly guidance delivered through your guardian angel. Your prayer combined with God's help through His minister, your guardian angel, can get you through

mes of trial and darkness.* Angel of God, my guardian dear,

to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side,

to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Welcome to Our Christian Family!

“The Wave” Each day Deacon Steve would a end 8 o’clock mass in

the chapel and sat in the last seat in the corner. He would “wave” to everyone, whether he knew them or

not. I believe it was his welcoming and a gentle blessing the for the day.

His wave will be missed as well as his smile. On behalf of our families: Norys, Mammarella and

Pollard: I want to express our deep gra tude for all the visits, prayers, cards, Masses to be said through the year and generous gi s. We are comforted by the

parish staff, our pastor Fr. Tim, Fr. Ma , Fr. Michael and Fr Tom, who now oversees the Ministry of Care, the Deacons and wives, parish family and the Ahlgrim

Funeral Home family. We grieve for our loss and for your loss too.

Remember Deacon Steve in your prayers and his wave. May he rest in peace and smile. AMEN

Please Make Your Gi to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word”

Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes, and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gi s. Please return your response as soon as possible.

The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word.”

In addi on to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help here in our Parish.

As we contemplate God’s many gi s to us, we should also reflect on our gra tude. Your financial support for the work of our Parish, our Archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is one way to express this gra tude. Please give generously to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal.

When our parish reaches its goal in paid pledges, all addi onal funds contributed will be returned to us for use in our Parish.
