OUR ANNUAL

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE During Advent we have the opportunity to realize the

deeper purpose of gift-giving through the custom of having a Giving Tree in our church.

The Ministry of Care, the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent DePaul, St. Theresa Women’s Club, and the children from St. Theresa School and Religious Education arrange to have certificates for food, clothing or toys placed in the Christmas baskets which will be distributed on December 21st this year. The Giving Tree can help to link Christmas gift-giving to the Christian love that marks all those who follow the One born at Bethlehem.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP! 1. Take an envelope from the Giving Tree in our Gathering Area. Put

your gift in the envelope. The gift can be cash, a gift certificate or a check made out to: St. Theresa Ministry of Care.

2. Return your envelope in the regular collection basket or drop it off at the Pauline Center.

3. We will buy a gift certificate from Eurofresh, Target, Jewel, or Payless Shoes.

4. The gift certificate will be placed in the Assist-A-Family Christmas baskets for the needy in our parish and the surrounding community to be distributed on December 21st in the church Gathering Area.

OR... YOU CAN HELP A LOCAL FAMILY THROUGH OUR CHRISTMAS

ASSIST-A-FAMILY BY GIVING THE GIFT OF FOOD! We have a list of families in need whose Christmas celebration could be enhanced by either the gift of food or the gift of “all the fixins” for a holiday dinner. Local grocery gift certificates are also very welcome.

We invite you to call: Donna Russ at 847-359-4064 or Fr. Tom at 847-358-7760 for more information.

Our holiday baskets will be distributed on Saturday, December 21st in the church Gathering Area.

A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Page 3

Dear Friends, A little over a year ago, Bishop Alberto Rojas was named our new Vicar-Bishop in Vicariate I, succeeding our retired Vicar, Bishop George Rassas. Bishop Rojas had previously been Vicar of Vicariate III since his ordination as bishop in 2011. He is 54 years of age. Bishop Rojas was born in Mexico, studied at Mundelein Seminary and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1997. He taught at the seminary for eight years and was a pastor for one year before Cardinal George ordained him an Auxiliary Bishop on August 10, 2011. On December 2, we received word that Pope Francis had named Bishop Rojas to be coadjutor Bishop with Bishop Gerald Barnes in the Diocese of San Bernardino, California. A coadjutor bishop works with the current bishop and eventually succeeds the current bishop when he retires or steps down from his post. While we don’t know for sure yet exactly when Bishop Rojas will begin his new assignment, it appears that he will be leaving our Vicariate at the beginning of February. There is no word yet on who will succeed Bishop Rojas here in Vicariate I. The Diocese of San Bernardino, California was created in 1978 and is already the sixth largest diocese in the U.S., with over 1.8 million Catholics, 75% of whom are Hispanic. Bishop Rojas will be the diocese’s third bishop in its 41 year history. Despite its size, there are no auxiliary bishops to serve with Bishop Rojas when he begins his ministry there. While I am very happy for Bishop Rojas, it will be sad to see him leave our vicariate. Bishop Rojas is a man of deep faith who exudes kindness and humility in everything he does. I was looking forward to him leading us for many years to come, but his loss is San Bernardino’s gain. He will make an excellent bishop of that diocese. We have been very fortunate in this vicariate to have so many good vicar bishops to guide us: Bishops Vlazny, Goedert, Kicanas, Listecki, Rassas and now Rojas have been excellent leaders who are a credit to the episcopacy. Let’s offer our prayers to Bishop Rojas as he prepares to lead the Diocese of San Bernardino, and all of our bishops. We all know how difficult it is to be a bishop in this day and age. Let’s also pray that the Holy Spirit will provide us with a new vicar who will follow in the footsteps of the men before him and be a great leader for Vicariate I. In other news, I have been asked by Bishop Rojas to be one of his six deans in Vicariate I. The role of the dean, usually given to a pastor, is to assist the vicar in his administration of a vicariate. That means I am responsible to serve as a liaison for the vicar bishop for several parishes in our area, including our own parish, St. Theresa. In addition to being a liaison to the bishop, I am responsible for making sure the official sacramental records of each parish is being done properly and in a timely fashion. I even get my very own official stamp and ink pad to mark the records of each parish’s books. I accepted the invitation of the bishop to be a dean, because it’s hard to say no to the bishop and with the blessing of four priests at St. Theresa, I felt this is one more way I can give back for that blessing. Please pray that I do a worthy job as dean. Next Tuesday, December 17th, marks our annual Advent Mission and Concert which begins at 7:00 pm in the church and food, refreshments and socializing in the Gathering Space beforehand. I invite all of you to come. The music is out of this world and the program lends itself to a very reflective evening of prayer in the craziness of the holiday season. Please set this time aside and join us. You will be very glad you did. Enjoy the week and may God bless you all.

The Prayer Challenge December 2019

Challenge #12:

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

During the month of December, your challenge is to say the

Prayer of St. Francis every day.

Take The Prayer Challenge and watch your spiritual life grow…

St Theresa Homeless Gift Card Collection— Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!

St Theresa parishioners responded so generously to the request to provide gift cards to brighten the Christmas season for the homeless and pregnant/parenting teens at Palatine and Fremd High Schools. This year the churches of Palatine Faith in Action collected about twelve thousand dollars in small denomination gift cards to dozens of restaurants and retail establishments in town. St Theresa parishioners contributed over seven thousand dollars of gift cards to this effort.

Because of your generosity, 120 students will each receive a gift pack with $100 in gift cards, personal hygiene items. and an encouraging note hand written by a member of one of the churches. These gift bags will be put together by Palatine Assisting Through Hope (www.path-palatine.org). and then given to the social workers at the high schools who will hand them out to each individual student.

Thanks again for your generosity allowing the churches in Palatine to be the arms and legs and face of Jesus to those in need in our community. If you have any questions about this or any other social outreach activity at St Theresa, feel free to contact Mike Thompson at [email protected].

Our recent 4 day weekend at Pontiac Correctional Center was a huge success! Your prayers and baking talents helped us bring the message of God's love for his children. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful ministry!

Also, I feel so blessed to witness the power of The Holy Spirit, softening the hardened hearts of many of these men, giving them hope through learning about Jesus's love for them and knowing that they are not forgotten.

Yours in Christ, Joe Raducka

Knights of Columbus Faith Library

We are near the end of Advent and moving into the Christmas season. This is a time not only of joyful celebration of the incarnation, but also a time of reflection and growing deeper in our faith.

Did you know that our library has CD’s and DVD’s in addition to books? So if reading is not your style, why not borrow a CD, which you can listen to while commuting to work? Under the “Christmas” section in the CD box, we have several CD’s of Christmas music. Enjoy the sounds of the season!

We also have two CD’s that can help deepen your faith. The first is from Bishop Robert Barron, and the second is from Bishop Fulton Sheen. These two Bishops are two of our most prolific orators of our faith. There is much we can learn from them.

In Bishop Barron’s CD, his third talk is titled, “The Journey of the Magi”. Bishop Barron teaches us 5 steps we should take when we encounter the Lord, as the Magi did:

1. Be attentive. 2. When you see a sign of Christ, go for it! 3. Expect opposition. 4. Give Him (Jesus) your best. 5. Expect that you will be different after coming into contact with Jesus.

In Bishop Sheen’s talk, “The True Meaning of Christmas”, he tells us that Divinity is found where you least expect it. This point goes hand in hand with what Bishop Barron speaks about. For those who are wondering if Jesus is the Lord, Bishop Sheen points out that Jesus stands apart from all the other religious figures in history (Mohammed, Confucius, Buddha, etc.). One test we can use to determine if God sent that person is prophesy. Did God tell us ahead of time to expect this individual? None of the other religious figures were prophesized ahead of time, but Jesus was. As a matter of fact, there are 456 statements in the Old Testament that speak about the future coming of the Messiah, and all 456 proved to be true. Only God could have orchestrated events to first, make these predictions, and second, to make them come true. This is one test that gives great credibility that Jesus is the Anointed One, the long awaited Messiah, the Son of God!

Enjoy the remaining days of Advent and the upcoming joyful Christmas celebration of the incarnation of the Messiah, Jesus the Christ!
