A Word from Pope Francis
Va can City : The Word of God in the first Sunday of Advent "brings out the contrast between the normal unfolding of things, the daily rou ne, and the sudden coming of the Lord” said Pope Francis commen ng on the Sunday
Gospel, before praying the Angelus with the faithful in St. Peter's Square.
Speaking of Advent, which began last Sunday with a new liturgical year, he stressed that this liturgical season is dominated by the theme of the "the Lord’s visit with humanity. The first, in the past, with the Incarna on, and Birth of Jesus at Christmas; the second, in the present, as Jesus visits us con nually, every day; and the final visit, in the future, when Jesus “will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead'".
Referring more specifically to the Gospel (Ma hew 24.37-44), comparing with the visit of the Lord to the coming of a thief or a sudden natural disaster, the pon ff stated: "The Gospel does not want to frighten us, but to open up our horizon to another, greater dimension, which on one hand rela vize everyday occurrences but at the same me makes them precious, decisive. The rela onship with the God-who-comes to visit with us gives every gesture, everything a different light, importance, a symbolic value ".
"From this perspec ve - he added - it is an invita on to sobriety, to not be dominated by the things of this world” but rather to keep them in their proper place. If, on the other hand, we allow ourselves to be overpowered by a concern for material things, we will not be able to perceive what is much more important: our final encounter with the Lord".
"In this me of Advent - he concluded - we are called to enlarge the horizons of our hearts, to be surprised by the life that is presented each day with its newness. In order to do this we need to learn to not depend on our own securi es, our own established plans, because the Lord comes in the hour which we don’t imagine”.
Our Lady, Virgin of Advent, help us not to consider ourselves owners of our lives, not to resist when the Lord comes to change it, but to be ready to go to him, as a welcome and expected guest, even when it upsets our plans. The pope concluded with: “May Advent be a me of hope, real hope, founded on the faithfulness of God and on our responsibility.”
Now more mundane things from the Pastor: I hope the words of the Holy Father will inspire you to take me out and focus and this special season we call Advent. Even at the bishop’s office, we have Christmas celebra ons and par es before we get there which tend to dim the beauty, the words, the music and the spirituality of this very brief Liturgical season. I hope you will all read the daily medita ons in the book the parish has provided and I hope our Sunday celebra ons will give you words and music to carry you through each Advent week.
Please join one another at the Men’s Club sponsored ‘pancake breakfast’ on Sunday, December 18th, a er both Masses. Good food with friends, at a be er than any ‘Black Friday or Cyber Monday’ deal, with fun for the kids and
me for us as a parish to get to relax and encourage one another with the holidays upon us.
On that note we are again asking for a few weeks that you put on a name tag as you enter the church for Mass over the next few Sundays. When we first did it, someone very strongly complained that this was a silly and worthless exercise. A few weeks later that parishioner thanks staff as she finally got to know the names of people she has been si ng near for many years. I hope all will par cipate and it will be another small way for us to con nue to grow into a welcoming and hospitable parish.
This Sunday we again have a second collec on for parish repair and maintenance. S ll no word on progress toward ge ng our event center repaired and back on use. I will give it another push this week. Nevertheless, other things need repair. You may have no ced lights in church out. When the church was renovated they le rewiring and new circuit breakers to us at this me. An electrician is working on ge ng it back online safely. Unfortunately, this is not a free gi so we rely on your con nued generous support to get it done correctly.
So, my prayer is that the tasks of the holidays be stress free, easy and joyful and as the Holy Father has called us to remember with a sincere effort to remember what the feast of Christmas is all about!
A Word from the Pastor:

This event appeals to young adults through seniors, and over 100 women are in attendance.
Why should I attend?
Advent by Candlelight provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the true spirit of the season, and to meet other St. T women. The event is spiritual and calming, and offers respite from the chaos of the holiday season. If you have never been to Advent by Candlelight, you are missing out on a lovely evening! So, please join us!
Something extra … In the spirit of Christmas and newborn babies, we invite guests to bring diapers and/or wipes to donate to local charities.
To attend this event, your RSVP is required by December 4th. RSVP by signing up in the vestibule, or contact Alex Murphy at

Weekly Calendar
P W Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we
have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope.
