OCTOBER 20, 2013 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME How great is the power of Prayer! One could call it a Queen who has at each instant free access to the King and who is able to obtain whatever she asks. To be heard, it is not necessary to read from a book some beautiful formula composed for the occasion. I do not have the courage to force myself to search out beautiful prayers in books. There are so many of them it really gives me a headache! and each prayer is more beautiful than the others. Not knowing which to choose, I do like children who do not know how to read, I say very simply to God what I wish to say, without composing beautiful sentences, and He always understands me. For me, prayer is a longing of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally, it is something great and supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus. TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

How great is the power of Prayer! One could call it a

Queen who has at each instant free access to the King

and who is able to obtain whatever she asks. To be

heard, it is not necessary to read from a book some

beautiful formula composed for the occasion. I do

not have the courage to force myself to search out

beautiful prayers in books. There are so many of

them it really gives me a headache! and each prayer

is more beautiful than the others. Not knowing

which to choose, I do like children who do not know

how to read, I say very simply to God what I wish to

say, without composing beautiful sentences, and He

always understands me. For me, prayer is a longing

of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven,

it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as

well as joy; finally, it is something great and

supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me

to Jesus.

Feast Day October 23

A word from Fr. James… Prayer: Part II So, in last week’s bulletin (and homily) I spoke about how we recognize the need for prayer in

our lives, and how prayer begins with thanking God for all he has given us, and then asking for

those things that reside within our hearts, inspired by the Holy Spirit. Today, I’d like to look

at the various forms of prayer, and the different possibilities that reside within each.

There are three different categories of prayer. The first is VOCAL prayer, in which we use

words (either out loud or within us) to give expression to our prayer. The second is

MEDITATIVE prayer, in which we allow God to touch our hearts and engage our thoughts,

imaginations and desires through imagry and interior movements. The third is CONTEM-

PLATIVE prayer, the deepest and really most difficult of the three. In this form of prayer, the mind is emptied of

all thoughts, words or images, and we simply reside in the presence of God, contemplating his greatness.

Today, I’ll begin by looking at the different forms of vocal prayer. They are many, and will require me to continue

with this next week. The first form of vocal prayer is called BLESSING AND ADORATION. In this form of

prayer, we give thanks and praise to god for all that he has given to us. In return we bless God. Now, the word

“bless” is used in a different way than our concept of blessing something. In blessing God, we are, like Mary,

MAGNIFYING the greatness of God’s nature through our expression of praise. In adoration, we move from

thanking God for what he has done to boasting (in the good way) of the nature of our God. It is, in secular terms,

“doting” on who our Creator is for us.

The second form of vocal prayer is the most common – the prayer of PETITION. Petition is asking for something

that we need. It is not asking for things that we just want because we’d like them – when we ask God for

something, we should have a good motive for wanting it. Health, family, security, faith, joy, peace – all good

things for us to pray for. A new car so that my friends will envy me? Probably not. Petition should be, first and

formost, a way of expressing our SPIRITUAL needs above our material needs. But if those material needs are real

– if you are suffering from a poor job, a bad marriage, stress, financial hardships, then you SHOULD pray for help

in these areas. WE CANNOT DO IT ALONE!

Next week, I will finish up with the remaining forms of vocal prayer. Until then, let your prayer transform your

heart into the heart of a child of God who, in his or her need, comes before the Lord of Lords who is most

generous, most merciful, and most loving – he will give you all you need.

Fr. James

St. John was born at Capistrano in Italy. His father who was a German knight, died when John was still young. John

studied law at the University of Perugia and then became a lawyer and governor of the city of Perugia. When war

broke out between Perugia and Malatesta, John tried hard to make peace but failed. Enemies of the city threw John

into prison and he started to think about the real meaning of life. John's enemies were not in a hurry to set him free.

He realized that the salvation of his soul was more important than anything else. So when he was miraculously set

free, at the age of 30, John joined a Franciscan monastery. For John, life as a poor friar was a big change. He had to

sacrifice his freedom for the love of Jesus and he tried with all his heart to do this. After he became a priest, John was

sent out to preach. He and St. Bernardine of Siena, spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, everywhere. John

traveled all over Europe preaching for forty years and those who heard him were moved to love and serve Jesus

better. When St. John was 70 years old, The Turks decided to conquer Europe and to wipe out the Church of Jesus.

Pope Callistus II sent St. John to all the Christian kings of Europe to beg them to unite and fight the mighty Turkish

army. The kings obeyed this poor, barefoot friar. He then marched off at the head of 70,000 Christian soldiers leading

them and encouraged the men to keep fighting. He stirred up their love of God and their courage with his fiery words.

But even though a big army of Christians came to fight Mohammed II and his Turks, it looked as though they would

lose. The enemy army was much bigger. Then the saint himself ran to the front lines. Holding his crucifix up high,

this thin, small old man kept crying, "Victory, Jesus, victory!" And the Christian soldiers felt full of courage. They

fought until the enemy ran away in fear and they won the battle of Belgrade. St. John Capistrano died a short time

later, on October 23, 1456.

And to defend

the rights of all,

Especially the unborn.

Bring us, your priests and peo-

ple

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than

they?” -Matthew 6:25-26
