Second Sunday of Easter April 12, 2015 3

My dear parishioners, Hope you had a great and wonderful Easter and the unique ex-perience of the Holy Week liturgy, which for all reasons is spiritually em-powering and elevating. It was so good to see so many people crowding the church at different services. May the Peace and Joy of the Risen Christ be with you for a long time.

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. The second Sunday of Easter was chosen to celebrate this feast because the gospel of the day speaks of God’s infi-nite mercy imparted through the forgiveness of sins through the instrumentality of the apostles who were given the authority to forgive sins in God’s name. This feast has also the origin when in 1931 Jesus appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska of Poland, a catholic nun, in a vision where she was told that the divine heart of Jesus is the eternal source of mercy. In the vision she saw Jesus clothed in a white garment with his right hand raised in bless-ing. His left hand was touching the area of his heart from where two large rays came forth: one red and the other pale. The two rays denote blood and wa-ter. The pale ray stands for water which makes souls righteous and the red ray stands for blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of his tender mercy when his agonized heart was opened by a lance on the cross. She was asked to paint the image with the signature “Jesus, I trust in you.” By means of this image Je-sus promised to grant many graces to souls. This is the historical background of this feast. On April 30, 2000, Holy Father Pope John Paul II declared the Sunday after Easter as the Divine Mercy Sunday to be observed universally. In connection with this feast special masses are celebrated in many churches of Chicago and all over the world, and Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed at 3 p.m. More literature is available at the back of the church. The Diary of St. Faustina Kow-alska contains her revelations of Jesus as The Di-vine Mercy. May the divine mercy of Jesus be ex-perienced by all who seek it. In the gospel of today we have two resur-rection appearances: one with Thomas and the oth-

er without him. Absent for the first event, Thomas is the central character of the second. Thomas is less of a doubter than the represent-atives of Christians like us, who are called to believe on the testimony of others. The faith required of him is more demanding than that required of those who actu-ally encountered the risen Lord. We may judge him harshly, but Jesus does not. Instead, Jesus invites Thomas to touch him, an invitation not extended earlier to the other disciples. Thomas then declares the risen Lord is God, a profession of faith that out-strips that of others. We can never know whether Thomas did touch Jesus or not, but every second Sunday of Easter we are told this story about Thomas and the risen Lord. It encourages us to fathom the mystery that is our faith, to learn to penetrate it by confess-ing Jesus as Lord and God, then allow this belief to flow out into our daily activities, reaching out to embrace others. Don’t you think when Thomas left the upper room that day he knew that the resurrec-tion was not something to keep to himself ? That his whole being was filled with the warmth and light absorbed from being in the presence of the risen Lord? Is it possible that this can happen to us? So we pray: Father of the only-begotten Son, send your Spirit upon us that we might know more deeply the truth of your Son’s resurrection and al-low it to penetrate our lives. Deepen our faith, hope and love so that the world will know us even now as the children of the resurrection. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENT: The new pastor has been named for St. Bernardine’s. He is Fr. Stanislaw Kuca, currently serving as the associate at St. Eliz-abeth Seton, Orland Hills, IL. He will take charge on July 1, 2015. I wish him well as the new pastor. God bless you all Fr. George Velloorattil

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

When we imagine the disciples cowering behind locked doors on the first Easter, it is a matter of the greatest urgency that the doors get opened. They are not locked in as if in prison; rather, they have chosen to marinate in fear. Both the lock and the key stand on their side of the door, in their control. Christ breaks through this significant bar-rier with a message of “Peace.” The risen Lord’s word propels them through the door and along the path leading to the consoling image of the community living in harmony in the first reading today. What do we pray for in our tradition? More than anything else, we pray for peace. Every Mass is an earnest prayer for peace with God, with self, with neighbor, and for peace in the world. Yet, curiously, the peace Christ offers is deeper than the mere absence of conflict. Our tradition treas-ures the memories of saints who were remarkably open to Christ’s gift of peace even in the mael-stroms of history. St. Edith Stein and St. Maximil-lian Kolbe, martyrs of the Holocaust, are but two examples. At the eye of a fearful storm, they stand as witnesses to the power of Christ’s rising in our lives.

OF ONE HEART AND MIND Reading about the faith of the early Christian believers can be a real inspiration to those of us who have been Christians for a long time, as well as for those who are newly baptized. Can you imagine people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as was the first com-munity of believers? Today’s First Letter of John seems to hold the key to how this can be accomplished. Keeping God’s command-ments and loving all of God’s children seems to be the start of being “of one heart and mind.” We live in a world that stresses differ-ences—differences among religions, among races, between genders, and among economic classes. Today we are summoned to focus on what we all share in common on this fragile planet of ours.
