On the weekend of June 27 & 28, 2015 the parish community of Saint Peter &Saint Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ansonia, CT celebrated a raremilestone in the long history of the parish – the 100th anniversary of theconstruction and blessing of their church building.

The parish itself has its beginnings in 1894 making it one of theoldest Ukrainian Catholic communities in the United States. In that yearlocal immigrants, mostly from the area of Lemkivshchyna in present dayPoland and Ukraine, desired to form a parish. The first church wasblessed in 1897 but it quickly proved to be too small for the growing com-munity. A new piece of land was purchased in 1915 and work was begunon constructing the present brick structure following building plansobtained from an architect in L’viv, Ukraine. Construction took two yearsto complete and the church was finally blessed by Bishop ConstantineBohachevsky in 1924. The noted Ukrainian artist, Theodore Hladky, dec-orated the interior of the church. As the present pastor, Very Rev. ArchpriestEdward Young says: “We will continue to celebrate our faith in this beautifulbuilding designed in western Ukraine and built here.”

The 100th anniversary celebrations began on Saturday morning,June 27 with the celebration by Bishop Paul, of a Divine Liturgy at 9:30 amin church commemorating Blessed Nicholas Charnetsky and the twenty-sixcontemporary Ukrainian Blessed Martyrs beatified by Pope Saint John PaulII in 2001 during his pastoral visit to Ukraine. At 2:00 pm Bishop Paul, alongwith the pastor, Rev. Edward Young and assistant pastor, Rev. StepanYanovski, celebrated a Moleben to the Mother of God following which theyand the faithful solemnly processed out of church and down the main stepsto the cornerstone of the church, which was set in place in 1915. There,Bishop Paul led the community in a prayer of remembrance and thanksgiving for allof the deceased builders and benefactors of the church over the past century and thenblessed the original cornerstone with holy water. Following this Bishop Paul, the con-celebrating priests and the faithful proceeded to the nearby wall of the parish rectoryfor the sealing and burial of a time capsule to mark the church building’s first century.Among the items inserted into the time capsule was a copy of the current parish list ofthe parish as well as a jubilee program and holy cards that were printed to mark theoccasion. The capsule and the beautiful granite marker that was placed on top werethe generous gifts of the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home and its director, JohnZaleski. The day’s events finished with an informal buffet reception in the church hall,prepared by the ladies of the parish.

On Sunday, June 28, the Feast-day of Ss. Peter & Paul, a hierarchical DivineLiturgy was celebrated by Bishop Paul at 10:00 am in church. The Parish President, Scott Walker,along with parish children, Amelia Douglas, Marko Gebuza, Melania Korynovsky and Peter Monksgreeted Bishop Paul at the main entrance of the church with bread & salt and flowers. Rt. Rev. MitredMsgr. John Terlecky, Rev. Edward Young and Rev. Stepan Yanovski concelebrated the Divine Liturgy.The responses were led by the parish cantor, Volodymyr Kit.

Following the church service a celebratory brunch was served at the Oronoque Country Clubin Stratford, CT. A longtime parishioner, Susan Monks, served as MC for the short program, whichincluded an artistic portion presented by the parish children and a thought-provoking keynote addressdelivered by Msgr. John Terlecky. Several eparchial priests from neighboring parishes joined theparishioners for the brunch as well as two special friends of Saints Peter & Paul Parish: Rev. JosephBertha, pastor of St. John, the Baptist Ruthenian Catholic Church in Trumbull, CT and Rev. PatrickBurns, pastor of Holy Saints Orthodox Church of America Parish in Ansonia.

For one hundred years this venerable house of prayer with its copper domesand cross has been majestically perched on top of one of the highest hills of Ansonia.As it was noted by a former pastor, Msgr. John Terlecky, in an interview with a localnewspaper: “The people in Ansonia can see it every day. It’s a physical presence in theirlives as much as a spiritual presence in ours.” Our prayer is that Saints Peter & PaulUkrainian Catholic Church continue to be that physical and spiritual presence inAnsonia for another hundred years!

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!

Today the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul is celebrated, as you know, by the universal Church, but par-ticularly with joy by the Church of Rome, because in their witness, sealed in blood, she has her very foundations.Rome bears special appreciation and gratitude for these men of God, who came from a distant land to proclaim, atthe cost of their lives, the Gospel of Christ to whom they were totally dedicated. The glorious legacy of these twoApostles is a source of spiritual pride for Rome and, at the same time, it is a call to live the Christian virtues, espe-cially faith and charity: faith in Jesus as Messiah and Son of God, which Peter first professed and Paul proclaimedto the Gentiles; and charity, which this Church is called to serve with a universal horizon.

In praying the Angelus, we connect the memory of Sts Peter and Paul to that of Mary, the living imageof the Church, the bride of Christ whom the two Apostles “made fruitful by their blood” (Entrance Antiphon in theMass of the Day). Peter knew Mary personally and conversed with her, especially in the days preceding Pentecost(cf. Acts 1:14), and he was able to deepen his understanding of the mystery of Christ. Paul, in proclaiming the ful-fillment of the plan of salvation ‘in the fullness of time,’ did not neglect to remember the ‘woman’ from whom theSon of God was born in time (cf. Gal 4:4). In the evangelization of the two Apostles here in Rome, there are alsothe roots of the deep and secular devotion of the Romans to the Virgin, invoked especially as Salus Populi Romani.Mary, Peter and Paul are our travel companions on the quest for God. They are our guides on the path of faith andholiness. They direct us to Jesus, urging us to do everything He asks of us. Let us invoke their help, that our heartsmay always be open to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit and to an encounter with our brothers and sisters.

In the Eucharistic Celebration, which was carried out this morning in St Peter’s Basilica, I blessed thePallium of Metropolitan Archbishops from various parts of the world who were appointed in the last year. I renewmy greeting and my best wishes to them, to their families and to those accompanying them on this important occa-sion, and I hope that the Pallium, while strengthening the bonds of communion with the See of Peter, be a stimu-lus for ever more generous service to the people entrusted to their zealous pastoral care. In the same liturgy I hadthe pleasure of greeting members of a Delegation in Rome on behalf of the Ecumenical Patriarch, our belovedbrother Bartholomew i, in order to participate, as they do every year, in the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul. This pres-ence too is a sign of the existing brotherly bonds between our Churches. Let us pray that, among ourselves, westrengthen the path to unity.

Our prayer today is especially for the city of Rome, for its spiritual and material well-being: may divinegrace sustain the whole of the Roman people, that it may live in the fullness of Christian faith, testified to with theintrepid ardour of Sts Peter and Paul. May the Holy Virgin intercede for us, Queen of the Apostles.

Improbable as it may seem, the Church will finally getaround—for the very first time—to declaring that a married coupleare saints (with a capital S, that is). True, they are hardly an ordinarycouple; their daughter, St. Therese of Liseux, is one of the Church’sbest known saints. But in October of this year, in conjunction withthe Synod of Bishops on the family, Louis Martin and his wife,Marie-Azelie (Zelie), are scheduled to be added to the ranks ofthose named saints—the first husband and wife to be canonizedtogether in Church history.

What was it that made the Martins such special people,that set them apart from the rest of us? After all, they seemed to havelived such routine lives. J.J. Ziegler, writing in Our Sunday Visitor,paints a portrait of a fairly successful couple who plied their tradesfrom their home. Louis, who was a skilled watchmaker, and Zelie,a talented maker of fine lace (she lived all her life in the Alenconarea of France, known for its lace), lived above a storefront theyworked at together.

But there were a few special events in their lives that, inretrospect, make them stand out—such as the first time they saweach other. One day in 1858 they were walking across a bridge inAlencon, passing by each other. Louis was 34; Zelie was 26. Andat that moment, Zelie heard a voice inside her. “This is the man,” itsaid, “that I have prepared for you.”

Both of them, growing up in France at a time of spiritualrebirth, had tried to enroll in religious communities, and both, some-what mysteriously, were rejected. At 22, Louis sought admission tothe Augustinians, but was turned down because he didn’t knowLatin. For the better part of a year he took lessons in that languagefrom a priest, but finally abandoned the effort and went off to learnthe watchmaker’s trade. Zelie too was interested in religious life; at19 she tried to enter the Daughters of Charity. But her attempt, likethat of her future husband, would end in refusal, for reasons notentirely clear.

They married (only three months after that incident on thebridge, when Zelie had heard that “voice” from inside her) andbegan life as husband and wife. Their home was a center of prayer,devotion and affection. Each morning they attended Mass, and gen-erally lived in an atmosphere of love and generosity. In time Zeliewould give birth to nine children—including, of course, the futureSt. Therese. Some 244 letters, published in a book titled “A Call toa Deeper Love,” reflect their devotion to each other.

And then there were the miracles on their road to saint-hood—the healing of an Italian infant for their beatification, thehealing of a Spanish girl (who had been expected to die) that pavedthe way to their canonization. “The doctors were totally amazed,”said the priest who was postulator of their cause. Some years later,he continued, “she is completely healthy, like all girls of her age.”

Now, as one headline writer had it, “history awaits” thecanonization of the Martins. It will be good to have a married cou-ple added to the ranks of saints, to be admired, to be cherished—and, yes, to pray to as well.

Ukrainian Catholic Church, His Beatitude PatriarchSviatoslav Shevchuk took part in the celebrations ofthe 100th anniversary of the Holy Ghost UkrainianCatholic Church in Akron, Ohio, whose pastor since2013 has been Fr. Vsevolod Shevchuk, HisBeatitude’s brother. The celebrations began with thePontifical Divine Liturgy presided over by the Headof the UGCC. In the solemn Liturgy also participateda few hierarchs, including Bishop Bohdan Danylo,Eparch of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St.Josaphat in Parma, Bishop Robert Moskal, Eparch-Emeritus of the Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma,Bishop John Kudrick, Eparch of the ByzantineCatholic Eparchy of Parma, Bishop John Botean,Eparch of the Romanian Byzantine Catholic Eparchyof St. George in Canton, the priests, deacons, conse-crated persons and the laity of the Ukrainian GreekCatholic Church, the Byzantine Catholic Church, theMaronite Catholic Church and the Roman CatholicChurch.

In his homily, His Beatitude Sviatoslav said:“Celebrating the centennial anniversary of this parish,we really celebrate one hundred years of the commu-nity of faithful people; a community, which for onehundred years has been the salt of the earth and lightof the world.” He continued: “A hundred years ago,the world was immersed in the World War I. Mostlikely, the first Ukrainian immigrants were not able tobring many earthly treasures to Akron. However, theywere able to bring in their hearts the most importanttreasure of their ancestors – their faith in God. Thatfaith which through the action of the Holy Spirit gavebirth to so many saints: martyrs, confessors and wit-nesses of Christ’s faith in our Church and in ournation, whose memory today we celebrate thisSunday.” Therefore, “This teaching of Jesus Christand the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of God’s Love, inwhose honor they dedicated this church, helped theentire generations of their offspring to first of allremain human, people who are able to love, to beresponsible, able to form a community of faith and toretain their identity. For the newly arrived, or dis-placed persons as they were called, our parishes werecenters of Christian solidarity, mutual help and, andthe communities where love of God and neighborwere of primary importance. This faith in God helpedthem to rediscover their own identity in the new coun-try. The light of Christ’s Gospel and this “salt” helpedthem find a new meaning in their lives in this land –the new homeland and to achieve success in theirlives,” said Patriarch Sviatoslav, adding “Letus all remember today in prayer all, whoserved God and people in this parish.” Sincethe third Sunday of June is traditionally theday, when in the United States is celebratedFather’s Day, His Beatitude also wished allfathers a blessed Father’s Day, quoting thewords of St. John Chrysostom, who taughtthat “one becomes a father not by the fact ofconceiving a new life, but by the paternalcare and Christian education of those he hasbegotten.” The Head of the UkrainianCatholic Church concluded the homily withthe following words: “May everyone, whocomes to this vibrant parish, to this commu-nity of authentic human relationships, per-sonally encounter the Living and RisenChrist and feel blessed in His love.Therefore, “let your light shine before oth-ers, that they may see your good deeds andglorify your heavenly Father” (Matthew5:16).”

Before the end of the Liturgy, thefloor was given to Bishop Robert Moskal,hence, he addressed the gathered faithfulwith a word, in which he recalled somemoments from the history of the parish.After the Eucharistic celebration, a tradition-al Ukrainian “Many and Happy Years” wassung to the Holy Father, His BeatitudeSviatoslav, Bishop Bohdan and the rest ofthe present Bishops as well as for all the hier-archs and the faithful of the Catholic Church,especially for the people gathered in the

church. Afterwards, Bishop Bohdan addressed everyonewith his word, in which the hierarch, among other things,stated that perhaps it was not a coincidence that it wasnamely on Father’s Day that the Father and the Head of theUkrainian Catholic Church visited the Holy Ghost Parishtoday. At the conclusion, His Beatitude thanked and con-gratulated the pastor of the parish, Father VsevolodShevchuk, on the centennial anniversary of the parish andwished his entire parish community the choicest blessingsof the Holy Spirit as they continue their journey of faith onthe Lord’s life-giving path. Father Vsevolod thanked HisBeatitude for having visited his parish com-munity and wished the Patriarch God’sblessings in his service as the Head of theUkrainian Catholic Church. The liturgicalcelebration was concluded with a song-prayer “Great and only God, Protect UkraineFor Us,” followed by a group photo, taken infront of the church.The celebrations continued with a festivebanquet, accompanied by a traditionalUkrainian music, in a nearby banquet hallthat was attended by ca. 200 people. Duringthe banquet, which was commenced with aprayer and blessing by His BeatitudeSviatoslav, a tribute was made to thefounders, the priests and the faithful of theHoly Ghost parish through a slide-show andpresentations by some of the parish’s representatives.Father Vsevolod Shevchuk likewise addressed all presentwith his word. The celebration concluded with a benedic-tion by Bishop Bohdan.

NoteThe first Ukrainian immigrants began to arrive in

Akron, Ohio circa 1900. Over 500 Ukrainians came to thearea between 1912 and 1914, and more than 2000 between1916 and 1918. As they settled and raised families, they rec-ognized a need for an organized social and religious life.

In October 1915, a meeting was called that result-ed in a consultation with the Rev. Leo Chapelskyj ofCleveland regarding the organization of a parish in Akron.On November 14, 1915, a decision to purchase lots onWashington and Abel Streets was made and by January 2,1916, it had been agreed to build the church. Despite thefinancial problems generated by World War I, the depres-sion that followed and the frequent turnover in pastors,which interfered with the growth of the parish, the parishwas able to burn its mortgage on September 23, 1945, itsthirtieth anniversary.

At this time, the parish became strengthened by aninflux of new immigrants from Europe. The increase in the

size of the parish prompted a decision to build a newchurch. The New Church Building Committeesecured funds for the project and purchased in 1946eight lots on Brown Street for the purpose of con-structing a new church. In March 1952, the thirty-three year pastorate of Rev. Taras Durbak began. Withhis arrival, the Sisterhood of the Blessed Virgin Marywas reorganized and renamed the Blessed VirginMary Ladies Society; membership in the Apostleshipof Prayer was increased; the Junior Sodality for Girlsand the Altar Boys Society were organized and a

school for religious education was started.In 1957 a renewed effort began to raise funds

for the new church. The dream of a new churchbecame a reality when on Sunday, May 14, 1961 theblessing of the grounds and breaking ceremonies forthe new church took place. The construction of thechurch was completed December 31, 1961, althoughthe first service in the new church took place onChristmas 1961 and regular services started on March11, 1962. Dedication of the new church took place onSeptember 3, 1962, with the Most Rev. ArchbishopMetropolitan Ambrose Senyshyn, OSBM, many cler-gy and faithful participating.

In 1971, an English Divine Liturgy wasadded to the Ukrainian one with church functionsbeing bilingual. On September 8, 1985, the VeryReverend Canon Archpriest Taras Durbak retired andRev. Wolodymyr Woloszczuk, the first in the parish tobecome a priest and who had been ordained by HisBeatitude Patriarch and Cardinal Josyf Slipyj onNovember 15, 1981, in Rome, started his pastorate atthe Holy Ghost Parish.Parishioners have been generous with their time, tal-ents and treasures. A baptismal font, chandelier,embroidered hangings of the Blessed Virgin Maryand Jesus Christ, the eternal lamp, a seven-branchcandle holder, a set of vestments for the pastor,embroidered altar linens and Gospels have beendonated by parishioners.

Donations have been made to CatholicSocial Services and for victims of various natural dis-asters both nationally and internationally and for theless fortunate locally. Among other things, parish-ioners bought and sent medical supplies for soldiers inUkraine. Talented parishioners have donated theirtime and energy in decorating the social hall in keep-ing with the seasons of the year and the Church inkeeping with the liturgical calendar.

The Parish of the Holy Ghost took to heartthe words of Patriarch Sviatoslav: “That is the properrole of our diaspora: not to live for Ukraine, but tolive: to be a strong and lively link between the coun-try that is your home and the country of your ances-try, whether that ancestry is ethnic or spiritual,because, as I have emphasized, there are many non-Ukrainians who are members of the Church of Kyivand that spiritual ancestry is even more important thanethnic ancestry. For us, the ancestry of Baptism isdeeper than the ancestry of blood” (Speech of HisBeatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk at the MetropolitanAndrey Sheptytsky Institute in Toronto (Canada), May2, 2014). Therefore, currently all the services in theparish are held in English.

The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate cele-brated Bishop Paul Chomnycky's feast day on June 25thwith Divine Liturgy followed by a festive dinner at St.Mary's Villa in Sloatsburg, NY. In his homily, Bishop Paulshared his experiences of walking in the footsteps of St.Paul, his patron saint, during his recent pilgrimage toGreece.

During the dinner, the Sisters presented BishopPaul with a unique gift - a fan in the shape of a bear. TheSisters shared Scripture passages and reflections whichfocused upon the gentle breezes and strong winds used bythe Holy Spirit to guide St. Paul and bestow upon him thecourage, strength and leadership qualities he needed to ful-fill the Will of God. The Sisters ask God for the sameblessings upon Bishop Paul. Mnohaya Lita!

From June 15 to 19, 2015, Bishop Paul preached a spiritual retreat forthe clergy of the Edmonton Eparchy at the invitation of Most Rev. DavidMotiuk, Bishop of the Eparchy of Edmonton, Canada. The retreat was held onthe grounds of the Sanctum Retreat Centre located outside the town ofCaroline, Alberta, deep in the tranquil and fragrant pine woods of the foothillsof the Canadian Rockies.

Falls Asleep in the LordAt the blessed age of 96, Sister Bonaventure(Annie) Kalawsky, SSMI peacefullY fell asleepin the Lord on July 6, 2015 at Nyack Manor inNyack, NY. Born in Round Hill, Alberta,Canada, she was the 12th of 13 children born toIgnatius and Anastasia (Pawlyshyn) Kalawsky.

During her 81 years of consecrated life,Sister Bonaventure taught in several elementaryschools; ministered to the elderly in our Home ofDivine Providence in Philadelphia, PA and inSt. Joseph’s Adult Care Home in Sloatsburg, NY; served as Provincial Secretary;served in catechetical ministry, and in pastoral ministry in various parishes. From1979 - 1984, Sister Bonaventure was missioned to Munich, Germany, to serve inthe residence of Bishop Kornyliak. It was here that she had the honor of servingdinner to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, later to be known as Pope Benedict XVI.

On Thursday July 9th, Bishop Emeritus Basil Losten blessed Sister’s cas-ket and celebrated the panahyda along with Rev. Edward Young, pastor of SS.Peter & Paul in Ansonia, CT. When speaking of Sister Bonaventure, Bishop Basilsaid that Sister Bonaventure would not want us to be weeping but to celebrate asher life, which was one of total joy and commitment to her God. In the evening,Msgr. John Terlecky, pastor of SS Peter & Paul in Spring Valley, NY and chaplainfor the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, concelebrated Parastas with Rev.Mark Sych, Sister Bonaventure’s great nephew from Canada, and Rev. AndriyDudkevych, pastor of St. Nicholas in Passaic, NJ.

On Friday, July 10th, Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM Eparch ofStamford, celebrated the funeral Divine Liturgy with Sr. Bonaventure’s great-nephew Rev. Mark Sych, Msgr. John Terlecky, Rev. Kiril Angelov, Chancellor forthe Eparchy of Stamford, Rev. Philip Sandrick, Provincial Superior of the BasilianFathers and Rev. Walter Pasicznyk, representing the Archeparchy of Philadelphia.

Bishop Paul noted in his homily that “there was nothing extraordinary inthe life of Sister Bonaventure. But, what made her stand out was the way in whichshe was constantly in wonder and awe in every moment of her life, no matterwhere she was, who she was with or what she was doing.”

Sister Kathleen Hutsko, Provincial Superior of the Sisters Servants ofMary Immaculate, cited the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 9, verse 62, as she spokedabout Sister Bonaventure: “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back isworthy of service in the Kingdom of God.” She said that as Sister Bonaventureleft her native country, her friends and family to be a worthy missionary of Christin the United States, she never looked back.

May her memory be eternal! Vichnaya Pamyat’!

АІсус Христос, як воплочена Божалюбов є тою силою, яка надаєможливість людині відроджуватиі відновлювати свої сили.«Не брутальна сила може принес-ти мир на землю, – переконуєГлава Церкви. – Не можна задопомогою якогось суспільногодоговору, що забирає в людинисвободу, принести мир на землю.Лише Божа любов, визволяючи,приносячи людині гідність і сво-боду, може бути фундаментом іосновою справжнього миру. Томуслуга Божий митрополит АндрейШептицький, з дня народженняякого цього місяця святкуватиме-мо 150-річчя, каже так: ненавистьніколи нічого не збудувала, нена-висть тільки руйнує. Навіть більше,я їх шкодую, тому що вони єжертвами, невільниками нена-висті власного гріха», – розпо-вів архиєрей.«Просімо сьогодні нашогоСпасителя, – закликає ГлаваУГКЦ, – щоб Він допоміг намбудувати нашу вільну Українуна любові, а не на ненависті.Остерігаймося кожного, хтоненавистю прикриває якусьновітню ідеологію, викори-стовує її для політичноїборотьби. Єпископи КатолицькоїЦеркви у США закликали вірнихзахищати подружжя як союз чолові-ка та жінки. «Ісус Христос у своїйвеликій любові навчає, що подруж-жя — це союз одного чоловіка таоднієї жінки, що триває до смертіодного з них. Унікальне значенняподружжя вписане також у кон-струкцію, у природу нашого тіла.Як католицькі єпископи, ми наслі-дуємо Христа та продовжуємонавчати так, як Він. Не зважаючи нате, що вирішує Верховний Суд, под-ружжя — сьогодні і на майбутнє —залишається союзом чоловіка тажінки. Ми будемо проголошуватицю істину спокійно, але й наполег-ливо», — заявив архиєпископЙозеф Куртц, голова єпископатуСША. Єпископи попереджають, щонаслідком ухвалення цього законустане «неминучий конфлікт міждержавою та Церквою, наслідківякого зазнають прийдешні поколін-ня».

Рішення у справіОбергефелл проти Ходжеса ухвали-

ли у п’ятницю, 26 червня. Це рішеннясуд ухвалив голосами п’яти членівпроти чотирьох. Тепер одностатевішлюби мають укладатися в усіх шта-тах, а також усі штати мають визнаватиуже укладені одностатеві союзи. Судвважає, що таким чином буде забез-печуватись реалізація 14 ПоправкиКонституції США, а саме положенняпро те, що «жоден штат не має прававидавати та застосовувати закони, які бобмежували привілеї та пільги грома-дян США». Представники церковнихгромадських організацій, однак,кажуть, що це положення не дає визна-чення подружжя, поправка захищає«життя, свободу та власність», а такожгарантує усім «однаковий захист зако-ном». У цьому випадку Верховний Судвизнав, що подружжя як союз чоловіката жінки дискримінує одностатеві парита загрожує їхнім правам. «ВерховнийСуд знає краще, ніж мільйони амери-канців, як має виглядати соціальна тасімейна політика нашої держави», —кажуть громадські активісти.

Правозахисники застерігають:легалізація одностатевих шлюбів нанаціональному рівні матиме жорсткийвплив на реалізацію права на вільневіросповідання. Таке розуміння 14Поправки суперечить Першій поправ-ці, що забезпечує право громадянСША вільно визнавати свої релігійніпогляди та жити згідно з ними.Архиєпископ Уільям Лорі з Балтіморапереконаний, що «реалізація релігійноїсвободи передбачає не лише можли-

вість дискутувати та відкрито говоритипро свої погляди. Віруючі мають правовтілювати свої погляди у життя».Більше того, після ухвалення змін дозаконодавства дискримінації зазнава-тиме саме «традиційне» подружжя. Цеможна було побачити на прикладі шта-тів, де одностатеві шлюби були узако-нені. Так, Ентоні Пікарелло, головнийюрист Єпископату США, вважає, щосьогодні необхідно робити кроки задлязабезпечення правового захисту тапідтримки людей, які дотримуютьсятрадиційного бачення подружжя.Відомі випадки, коли власники аген-цій, що займаються організацією тапроведенням весільних церемоній, від-мовлялися виконувати замовленнягомосексуальних пар, оскільки цесуперечило їхнім релігійним поглядам.У таких випадках рішення суду було накористь гомосексуальних пар. Аджетакі заклади не є релігійними організа-ціями, вони здійснюють діяльність зметою отримання прибутку та неможуть відмовити у виконанні замов-лення.«Законодавче затвердження іншоговизначення подружжя — трагічнапомилка, що принесе шкоду спільномублагу, особливо найбільш вразливимсеред нас — дітям. Адже кожна дитинамає право зростати та виховуватисьбатьком та матір’ю у атмосфері добро-зичливості та стабільності, яку забез-печує батьківський дім», — йдеться удокументі єпископату США. Єпископизакликали усіх людей доброї волі підт-

римати католиків у прагненні захи-стити подружжя, а також вшанува-ти їхнє право жити згідно зі своїмсумлінням.

Нагадаємо, 26 червня,Верховний суд США своїм оста-точним рішенням визнав законни-ми одностатеві шлюби по всій краї-ні. Раніше вони були забороненіще на території 14 штатів.Одностатеві пари мають конститу-ційне право укладати шлюби навсій території США, вважаєВерховний суд країни. Голоси суд-дів під час прийняття рішення роз-поділилися п'ять проти чотирьох.Таким чином, суд постановив, щовлада штатів не має права позбав-ляти одностатеві пари праваукладати шлюби. Це відіб'ється наполітиці 14 штатів США, де ранішеце було заборонено. Один із суд-дів, що голосували проти рішення,Кліренс Томас, обґрунтовуючи свійголос «проти» даного вироку, напи-сав, що такий вирок Верховногосуду США має потенційно згубнінаслідки для свободи віросповідан-ня. Він зазначив, що Уряд країниможе скасувати безподатковий ста-тус релігійних організацій, які неприймуть цього рішення, а це станев американських реаліях прямоюзагрозою свободі віросповідання вСША.

Хоча з історії української емігра-ції в Америці маємо ряд науковихпраць та дещо з мемуаристики,проте ця тема далеко не вичерпа-на. Автори цих праць опиралисьна матеріяли, які були доступні втой час. Завжди є можливістьпоширити і доповнити цю тему таглибше проаналізувати цей фено-мен. Часто буває так, що під часдослідів ненароком з’являютьсянові матеріали. Вражаючим є те,як нібито незначний документ, чималенький памфлет можуть дода-ти важливе та глибше розумінняданих подій та збагатити історич-ні джерела.

Перші дві українські емігра-ційні хвилі в Америці заклалипідвалини релігійного, організа-ційного та суспільно-політичногожиття для нас, українців, уродже-них тут, чи прибулих. Ці підвали-ни були такими міцними, що ми, увеликій мірі, до сьогодні кори-стуємось ними. Це справді вра-жає, як ці перші емігранти, членинаціонально пригніченого народу,із найнищих суспільних класів,

неграмотні або напівграмотні, ізмалою горсткою релігійних та сус-пільних освічених провідників,змогли збудувати так багато і таксолідно.

Обсервуючи американські демо-кратичні організаційні системи,нові емігранти засвоїли деякі аспек-ти цих структур для користі власнихгромад. І у такий спосіб зміцнилисвою працю для спільного добра,навчили їх, яку перевагу має спів-праця, вселили в них почуття сус-пільної відповідальності, провадилиїх до кращого рівня життя, не поки-даючи свого етнічного походження,ідентичності та культурної спадщи-ни.

Перші організаційні спроби булизв’язані з релігійними потребами.Нові емігранти засновували парафії,будували церкви, організовувалихори, вечірні і суботні школи, брат-ства, сестринства, і тому подібне.Дальше прийшло засновуваннясуспільних, політичних та това-

риських клюбів. Усі ці організа-ційні одиниці мали свої статути.

Наш Музей і Бібліотека недав-но одержали маленьке видання –Статути Руського МолодечогоКлюбу Поступового в ДжерзіСиті, Н.Дж., організованого 22-гооктобря 1902 р. КнижечкаСтатутів була видана 1910 р. вдрукарні “Свободи”, яка тоді зна-ходилася на вулиці Гудсон в НьюЙорку. У книжці знаходитьсязаохочуюче та зворушливо-пат-ріотичне вступне слово, яке вка-зує на відповідальность, нюанси,дилеми та перешкоди, які молодіукраїнські емігранти мусілипоборювати, щоб зберегти своюрелігійну, етнічну та національнугідність. Вступне слово написавСтефан Мілянович, президент клюбув 1909-1910 років. У конвенційнихзвітах Українського НародногоСоюзу подано, що СтефанМілянович кількаразово був вибра-ний до уряду УНС на пост членаконтрольної комісії та секретаря.Його донька Меланія працювала вканцелярії УНС довгі роки, була чле-

ном Ліґи УкраїнськоїМолоді Північної Америки(1933-1971) та брала актив-ну участь у всіх культурнихпроявах української грома-ди.

Ось такі думки вислов-лює Стефан Мілянович увступі до книжечкиСтатутів: “ПоважанийТоваришу! …сподіватисяможемо від Тебе, що гурту-вати будеш членів, і що аніна одні сходини не прийдешбез нікого знаючи що черезтаке поступовання вирвешнераз не одного сина тогопоневоленого народа що іти, з рук нам ворожих наційабо їх ідей (москофільство,православіє, полонізація і

мадяронізація), знаючи, що черезтаке поступовання можемо числи-ти на розвій нашого Товариства, атим самим на будучність нашихпоколінь Руського Українськогонарода на Американській землі... оцеціль товариства стати сторожаминародних прав, патріотичними бра-тами, котрі без зависти а в згодіорють запущену рідну ниву... тожтоваришу будь отвертим і смілимчленом і патріотом Українцем, стіймуром за свої народні і товариськіправа, не позволяй нікому насмівати-ся або кпити зі всего, що нам дороге,рідне і миле...” Автор також цитуєслова Михайла Грушевського“Борись за добре і поборяй все те щообнижує уровень нашого життя,що гамує наш національний розвій”.

Клюб вибрав своїм опікуномАрхистратига Михаїла. Так якАрхангел боровся зі злом, так кож-ний член мав ”ставати мужньо до

боротьби з темнотою, ворогами Богаі церкви і нашого довгою неволеюпригнобленого Русько Українськогонароду”.

У статті подано, що членом това-риства може бути кожний чоловік увіці від 16 до 40 років, а такожвизначені цілі товариства, такі як: а)моральна б) матеріальна, в) народно-політична і г) товариська. Моральніцілі включали організацію бібліотек,створення театральних постановок,вправляння в співі і музиці, підтри-мування місцевої греко-католицькоїцеркви і школи, а також сумліннесплачення приписаної місячної цер-ковної збірки; до матеріальнихобов’язків належала допомога хво-рим, поширення ідеї тверезости,вибір страхування в УкраїнськомуНародному Союзі на випадок смер-ти, допомога членам у пошуку робо-ти, заохочення до вступу в амери-канські профспілки; до народно-політичних обов’язків входилаучасть в політичних акціях, особли-во у виборах, організація політичнихманіфестацій й допомога членамстати справжніми американськимигромадянами.

Статут складається з 10-ти частин

і виділяє привілеї та відповідаль-ності кожного члена товариства.Як додаток до Статутів, включе-но анкету для подання на амери-канське громадянство і питаннята відповіді для вивчення з істо-рії та державного устроюАмерики.

Як довго існував цей Клюб-Товариство, ми не знаємо. Хто(окрім Стефана Мілановича) іскільки було членів - також неві-домо. Важним фактом є те, щотакий клюб, із такими визначни-ми, вартісними та далекосяжни-ми якостями і цілями, існував ібув заснований 113 років тому.Деякі із перешкод для праці і роз-витку, з якими українці вАмериці стрічалися 1902 року знами є ще й сьогодні.Засновники цього клюбу ізасновники подібних товариствта братств тих часів, незалежно

від їх обмежених можливостей,мали глибоке почуття суспільноївідповідальності, взаємної підт-римки та благородства духу.Вони завжди пам’ятали продобро свого народу, добро укра-їнської громади-суспільства вАмериці і її майбутніх поколінь,а також важливість та необхід-ність збереження ідентичності,етнічної та культурної спадщини.Для цього вони будували церкви,школи, народні доми, культурніустанови, засновували політичніта суспільні товариства і робилице в досить невідрадні та ризико-вані часи. Ми користуємось всім,що вони нам залишили в спадок.Шкода лише, що замість того,щоб зберігати цей спадок, мизанедбуємо, ліквідовуємо абонищимо його. Наші попередникикерувалися ідеями співпраці, від-повідальності, жертвенності, а некористолюбством, самолюб-ством та жадобою. А як ми? Щоми залишимо в спадок нашимнащадкам?

З 19 по 22 червня 2015 р.Блаженніший Святослав перебував зпастирським візитом в українськійєпархії Св. Йосафата у Пармі. Умежах візиту Глава УГКЦ очоливювілейні святкування з нагоди 100-ліття заснування парафії СвятогоДуха в м. Акрон (штат Огайо).

Божественну Літургію зБлаженнішим Святославом, ГлавоюУГКЦ, співслужили владика Богдан(Данило), єпарх Пармський, владикаРоберт (Москаль), єпископ-емеритцієї єпархії, владика Іван (Кудрик),єпископ місцевої рутенської єпархії,владика Іван (Ботін), єпископрумунської греко-католицької єпархіїу США. Разом із ними молилися чис-ленні священики, монахи і монахиніта миряни нашої Церкви як із США,так і з Канади.

У пастирському слові з наго-ди цього ювілею Блаженніший,зокрема, сказав: «Християни роблятьтой світ, в якому живуть, більш людя-ним (гуманним), а сучасну глобалізо-вану культуру, яка має схильність ста-вати більше середовищем машин ікомп’ютерів, – більш людяною. Нажаль, в такій культурі віртуальногоспілкування людський біль стає видо-вищем. Сучасна війна з людськимгорем, слізьми й кров’ю стає длянинішніх президентів чимось наподобі комп’ютерної гри, а людськежиття вартує рівно стільки, скількиця людина споживає і виробляє. Яклюдині вижити у світі, в якому вонастає зайвою, в середовищі, яке моде-люється для роботів, а не людей?»… Саме віра в Бога, на переконання про-повідника, допомагає «сучаснійлюдині доцінити та зберегти автен-тичність людських стосунків. Тихстосунків, які дозволяють їй бутисобою, вміти бути милосердною,здатною бути солідарною із страж-даючими, щирою та співчутливою допотребуючих. Той, хто не вміє люби-ти і бути відповідальним за тих, коголюбить, не може створити сім’ї яквірної, нерозривної та плідної єдностічоловіка та жінки, не зуміє сам бутиблаженним (щасливим) та виховува-ти інших» (повний текст проповідідив. у додатку нижче).

Цієї неділі у СполученихШтатах відзначають День батька.

Вітаючи присутніх батьків,Блаженніший Святослав ска-зав: «Я щиро вітаю всіх батьківіз цим святом і хочу пригадати,що, за словами св. ІванаЗолотоустого, батьком мужчи-ну робить не лише сам фактнародження дитини, а бать-ківське піклування і христи-янське виховання тих, кому видали життя».

Перед завершеннямЛітургії, слово було надановладиці Робертові (Москалеві),отож він звернувся до зібранихвірних зі словом, у якому вінзгадав деякі моменти з історіїпарафії. Після ЄвхаристійногоБогослужіння, була заспіванотрадиційне українське «много-ліття» Святішому Отцеві,Блаженнішому Святославові,владиці Богданові та іншихприсутнім єпископам як такожвсім єрархам та вірнимКатолицької Церкви, особливо

тим людям, які зібралися в церкві. Опіслявладика Богдан звернувся до всіх зі своїмсловом, у якому єрарх поміж іншим зазна-чив, що можливо це було не випадково, щосаме в День батька Глава і БатькоУкраїнської Греко-Католицької Церквивідвідав сьогодні парафію Святого Духа.На закінчення, Блаженніший подякував іпривітав пароха парафії, отця ВсеволодаШевчука, зі столітнім ювілеєм парафії тапобажав всій парафіяльній громаді найо-бильніших благодатей Святого Духа наГосподньому життєдайному шляху віри.Отець Всеволод подякував ЙогоБлаженству за відвідини його парафіяль-ної спільноти та побажав ПатріарховіБожих благословень в його служінні якГлави Української Греко-КатолицькоїЦеркви. Літургію було завершено молит-вою-співом «Боже великий, єдиний, намУкраїну храни», після чого всі, вийшовшиз церкви, стали до групового фото передхрамом.

Урочистості продовжилися свят-ковим бенкетом, в якому взяло участь бл.200 осіб, в одному з прилеглих бенкетнихзалів, під час якого звучала традиційнаукраїнська музика. Під час бенкету, якийрозпочався молитвою та благословеннямБлаженнішого Святослава, було відданочесть засновникам, священикам та вірянампарафії Святого Духа через слайд-шоу тапрезентації деякими представникамипарафії. Отець Всеволод рівно ж звернув-ся до всіх присутніх зі словом.Святкування завершилося коротким сло-вом та молитвою владики Богдана.

Довідка:Перші українські емігранти поча-

ли прибувати в Акрон, штат Огайо (США)близько 1900 року. Більше 500 українцівприбуло до регіону між 1912 і 1914 рр. ібільш ніж 2000 між 1916 і 1918 рр.Оселившись та започаткувавши родини,вони відчули необхідність в організовано-му соціальному та релігійному житті.У жовтні 1915 р. було скликане засідання,що призвело до консультацій з отцемЛевом Чапельським з Клівленда щодоорганізації парафії в Акроні. 14 листопада1915 р. було прийняте рішення щодокупівлі земельних ділянок на вулицяхВашингтона та Авеля і до 2 січня 1916 р.було вирішено побудувати там церкву.Незважаючи на фінансові проблеми,породжені Першою світовою війною,депресією, що послідувала за нею тачастою зміною парохів, що заважало зро-

стові парафії, парафія спромоглася пога-сити свою іпотеку до 23 вересня 1945 р.– в її тридцяту річницю з часу заснуван-ня.

У цей час парафія почала зміц-нюватися припливом нових іммігрантівз Європи. Збільшення розміру парафіївикликало рішення щодо будівництванової церкви. Комітет з будівництванової церкви забезпечив фінансові засо-би для цього проекту та придбав в 1946р. вісім ділянок на вулиці Брауна зметою побудови там нової церкви. Уберезні 1952 р., розпочалося тридця-титрьох-літнє служіння отця ТарасаДурбака. З його приходом, було реорга-нізовано та перейменовано СестринствоПресвятої Діви Марії на ТовариствоЖінок Пресвятої Діви Марії; було збіль-шено членство в Апостольстві молитви;було організовано Товариство для моло-дих дівчат та Товариство вівтарних дру-жинників; рівно ж була розпочата школадля релігійної освіти.

У 1957 році розпочалися новізусилля задля збору коштів для новогохраму. Мрія про нову церкву стала дій-сністю, коли в неділю, 14 травня 1961 р.,відбулося благословення ділянок тацеремонії закладення наріжного каменядля нової церкви. Будівництво церквибуло завершено 31 грудня 1961 р., хочаперше богослужіння у новій церкві від-булося на Різдво 1961 року, а регулярнібогослужіння розпочалися 11 березня1962 р. Посвячення нового храму відбу-лося 3 вересня 1962 р. за участю пре-освященного архиєпископа і митрополи-та Амвросія Сенишина, ЧСВВ як такожбагатьох священнослужителів та вірян.

У 1971 році до БожественноїЛітургії українською мовою була доданаЛітургія англійською, а відтак церковніміроприємства стали двомовними. 8вересня 1985 р. всесвітліший протоєрей-канонік Тарас Дурбак пішов на пенсію іотець Володимир Волощук, перший,який став священиком в парафії та якийбув рукоположний БлаженнішимПатріархом і кардиналом ЙосифомСліпим 15 листопада 1981 р. в Римі, роз-почав своє душпастирство в парохіїСвятого Духа.

Парафіяни були щедрими щодоїх часу, талантів та скарбів. Купіль дляхрещення, люстри, вишиті хоругвиПресвятої Діви Марії та Ісуса Христа,вічна лампа, семисвічник, набір свяще-ничих риз для пароха, вишиті вівтарніобруси та Євангелія були пожертвуваніпарафіянами.Пожертви були зроблені для організації«Католицькі соціальні послуги» та дляжертв різних стихійних лих як на націо-нальному так і на міжнародному рівні як

рівно ж для менш щасливих на місце-вому рівні. Серед іншого, парафіяникупили та відправили медикаментидля солдатів в Україну. Талановитіпарафіяни пожертвували свій час таенергію в оформленні парафіяльногозалу відповідно до пір року та церквивідповідно до літургійного календаря.

Парафія Святого Духа при-йняла близько до серця словаПатріарха Святослава: «Ось вірнароль нашої діаспори: не жити дляУкраїни, але жити: бути міцним таживим зв’язком між країною, яка євашим домом, та країною вашогопоходження – будь це походженняетнічне чи духовне, тому що, як я вжепідкреслював, існує багато не-україн-ців, які є членами Київської Церкви іте духовне походження є важливішимніж етнічна приналежність. Для нас,хрещальне походження є глибшим,ніж кровне походження» (ПромоваБлаженнішого Святослава (Шевчука)в Інституті Митрополита АндреяШептицького в Торонто (Канада) 2травня 2014 р.). Тому, на даний час, всібогослужіння в парафії проводятьсяанглійською мовою.

Нагірну проповідь, яка є наче короткимзбірником і підсумком усього Йогонавчання, навчання, яке не є зовнішнімпримусом, але радше покликанням,покликанням до блаженства. Ці такзвані «заповіді блаженства» – це ніщоінше, як виклик прийняти Божу любовдо нас і в ній жити. Сповнення цих бла-женств – дія Святого Духа, більше діяБожа, ніж людська. Від нас лишенеобхідно відповісти на цей виклик –прийняти Духа Божої любові, бути хра-мом Святого Духа.

Віруюча людина, та, яка сприй-няла й увірувала у Слово Христа, відчу-ла себе блаженною в Божій любові,навіть серед усіх моментів людськогостраждання та глибини трагічності істо-рії усвідомлює себе храмом СвятогоДуха. Та Божа любов, оце внутрішнєблаженство, ніхто і ніщо в нас не зможевідібрати. Це блаженство від досвідуДуха Христового, що живе в нас, єнашим справжнім і вічним багатствомсеред вбогості, радістю серед плачу,надією та правдою серед переслідуваньі гноблення, милосердям Божим середжорстокості цього світу, нашим справж-нім миром серед війни. Про це влучноговорить апостол Павло: «Хто нас від-лучить від Христової любові? Горе чиутиск, чи переслідування, чи голод, чинагота, чи небезпека, чи меч? ...Але вусьому тому ми маємо повну перемогузавдяки тому, хто полюбив нас. Бо япевний, що ні смерть, ні життя, ні анге-

ли, ні князівства, ні теперішнє, ні май-бутнє… не зможе нас відлучити відБожої любові, що в Христі Ісусі, Господінашім» (Рим. 8, 35–39).

Ось чому таку віруючу людину,учня Христового, який у собі носитьЙого Духа і Його блаженство, в сьогод-нішньому світі Ісус Христос називає«сіллю землі та світлом для світу».Віруюча людина, наче сіль, надає нового«смаку» тому суспільству, тій державі, вякій живе. Зазвичай цих справжніх хри-стиян небагато, як цілком трішечки соліми кладемо в наші страви. Однак безхристиян сьогодні світ був би направдунелюдським – непридатний для гідногожиття людини. Саме ця наука Ісуса Христа таДух Святий – Дух Божої любові, начесть якого вони збудували цю церкву,допомогли цілим поколінням їхніхнащадків залишитися найперше людь-ми, людьми, здатними до любові та від-повідальності, здатними творити спіль-ноту віри та зберегти свою ідентичність.Саме наші парафії були осередками хри-стиянської солідарності та взаємодопо-моги новоприбулим, спільнотами любо-ві до Бога та ближнього. Саме віра в Богадопомогла їм віднайти себе в новій краї-ні. Завдяки світлуХристового Євангеліята цієї «солі» вонизмогли надати новогосенсу своєму життю націй землі – новій бать-ківщині та добитисяуспіхів.

Сьогодні вмолитві згадаймо всіх,хто служив Богові йлюдям у цій парафії.

Цього року парафія Св.Андрія Первозванного буде свят-кувати 10 – у річницю побудови іпосвячення храму. Тому, булоприємно вітати жертводавців, а

особливо родину Мартюк, якапожертвувала великий вітражВОЗНЕСІННЯ Господа нашогоІсуса Христа в пам’ять дорого-го мужа + Мирона Мартюка.Також ікону шестокрилогоСерафима родина Мартюкпожертвувала в пам’ять+Миколи та +Розалії та +ІванаКріль, які спочивають на цвин-тарі Святого Духа.

Парастас відбувся біляГоловного Хреста за участюсвящеників, ієромонахів табагатьох прочан. Помолилисябіля могил блаженної пам’ятіМитрополита Шмондюка тасвящеників, біля символічної

могили українців, які служили вамериканському війську, відпра-вили панахиду на гробахІєромонахів та монахів чинуСвятого Василія Великого, анаостанок помолилися за всіхгероїв, які віддали своє життя в

боротьбі за вільну Україну вминулому столітті, а також тепе-рішніх героїв Небесної Сотні ітисячі загиблих у теперішнійвійні.

Наші парафіяни в деньпрощі працювали щоби забез-печити умови для всіх прочан:допомогти з паркованням, забез-печити озвученням, а також при-готувати і подати смачні укра-їнські страви. Господь Богпоблагословив нас гарною пого-дою, тому деякі прочани аж пізноввечері покинули це святе місце –український куточок в Америці.

Швидко минає час, про-майнув, ще один рік, відлунав 4-йУкраїнський фестиваль на пара-фії Святої Трійці, що на СтейтенАйленді, Нью-Йорк.

Наш щорічний фестивальстав традицією і збирає з кожнимроком все більше гостей, якихрозважають українською музи-кою, співами, танцями та приго-щають українськими стравами.Зібрані під час фестивалю коштидопомагають утримувати Божийдім в належному стані і даютьширші можливості для розвиткудуховного і культурного життяпарафії.

В неділю, зранку до нашоїцеркви, почали прибувати гості іпарафіяни. Рівно в призначенийчас почалася величнаАрхиєрейська Служба Божа,якувідслужив Владика ВасильЛостен і парох церкви о. ВасильГоденчук. Під кінецьБожественної Літургії о. Васильпобажав Владиці ВасилюЛостену многая літ, сердечно

подякував зайого щирімолитви, задобрі слова іпідтримку. Зате, що не зва-жаючи наповажний вік85 років, знай-шов час і мож-ливість заго-стити донашої парафії,п ом ол и т и с ь

разом з нами і поблагословити нашфестиваль.

Після богослуження, людирушили на парафіяльне подвір’я, дебула розташована сцена для виступу

артистів і продавалися смачністрави та напої української кухні.Владика Василь i о. Василь від-крили та благословили 4-йУкраїнський фестиваль. Залуналаукраїнська музика, ведучі ВасильГоденчук (молодший) і ТетянаХомин, розпочали концертну про-граму.

На початку програми висту-пив п. Олег Мельник і розказавпро вклад української діаспори знавколишніх штатів і нашої пара-фї зокрема, у допомогу українсь-кій армії і пораненим солдатам.Марія Круль своєю промовоюповернула всіх у часи РеволюціїГідності і зачитала вірш посвяче-ний загиблим за волю України.

Отець Ярослав Костикнародився 8 лютого 1963 року наІвано-Франківщині у побожнійродині о. Олексія та МартиКостик. Крім Ярослава батькивиховували ще синів Мар’яна іЮрія (які також стали священи-ками), та доньку Богданну, щопоєднала своє життя з отцемОлегом Жовніровичем. У родиніКостик панувала глибока повагадо Божого Слова, християнськихзвичаїв, родинних обов’язків.Завдяки сумлінній щоденнійпраці, самодисципліні кожний іздітей здобув вищу освіту і оволо-діли відповідним фахом. Позавершенні навчання славнозвіс-ної Львівської Політехніки отецьЯрослав працює інженером умісті Коломия. Згодом створюєсім’ю із Марією – дочкою отцяБогдана та Ганни Лесюк.

Саме тоді Ярослав від-чув, що натура його потребуєіншого покликання. Отримавшибатьківські благословенняЯрослав вступає до духовноїСемінарії в місті Загорськ.

На той час в Українівирували суспільні перебудови –тріщали залізні мури “непобіди-мого СРСР”. У сім’ї голоснішезаговорили про реабілітаціюпереслідуваної Греко-Католицької Церкви.Повернувшись в 1990 році всту-пає до Івано-ФранківськогоБого словсько-ТеологічногоІнституту. Дияконські свяченняприйняв від Кир Павла Василикау червні, а 13 липня 1990 року укатедрі міста Івано-Франківськабув висвячений на священика.Після закінчення інституту у1995 вступає до Інституту ВищоїРелігійної Культури приКатолицькому Університеті уЛюблені. Служив на пара-фіях у Косівському ДеканатіКоломийсько-ЧернівецькоїЕпархії – Нижньому Березові,

Старих Кутах, Кобаках.В 1997 році на запрошення

Кир Василя Лостена прибув доСтемфордської Епархії. Брав студіїу Семінарії Святих Апостолів уCromwell, CT, а також служив напарафіях у Hartford, Ansonia, CT таOzon Park, NY. З 1999 року служив на парафіях Св.Миколая у Hudson, NY, та Св. ІванаХрестителя у Pittsfild, MA. У 2002році був назначений на парафію Св.Ап. Андрія у Campbell Hall, NY де ів даний час є парохом, а такождиректором УкраїнськогоКатолицького Цвинтаря СвятогоДуха.

Саме тут усвідомив, щоневипадковим був його приїзд доАмерики – отримав нагоду до вели-кої справи - побудови нового довго-очікуваного храму. Під благосло-венням Владики Василя Лостенаочолив організаційні роботи (тут іпригодились інженерно-технічнізнання). Нинішнього 2015 рокусвяткуватимемо 10-у річницюпосвяти храму. Отець Ярославпишається і втішається храмом інаголошує, що ця чудова споруда єсвідченням віри у ВсемогутньогоБога, який по вірі дає те, що потре-буємо для слави Божої і добра укра-їнського народу на імміграції. Нетака вона легка душпастирськапраця на чужині. Громади тут спе-цифічні, - різного рівня віри, релі-гійних знань, виховання і требазнайти шлях до кождого серця.Якщо серед старшого покоління євіруючі, які ще від батьків успадку-вали глибоку віру, - то більшістьновоприбулих є малообізнані ізСвятим Письмом і наукою Церкви.Саме їм настанови отця Ярославанеобхідні, як чисте повітря,необхідне для відновлення сил,пізнання Бога і життя. Від батькасвященика успадкував святе прави-ло безвідмовного служінню Богові ілюдям. Своєю різносторонньоюпрацею о. Ярослав прагне єднатинас з Ісусом Христом, уприсутню-вати Його серед громади, щоразудоносити слово Євангелія.Особливо радіє наш священик, колидо храму навертається молодь,діточки, прагне прихилити їхнісерця до Господнього Слова, навчи-ти любити рідну Церкву. Отець від-критий до діалогу, зацікавленовислухає, підтримає, він не ділитьлюдей на конфесії, часто із своїмипарафіянами відвідує імпрезинаших братів із православної церк-ви у Glen Spey. У 2016 будемо свят-кувати 50-ти ліття посвяченняхраму св. Володимира Великого ідесятиліття як отець служить уньому. Отець Ярослав тіснопов’язаний із життям громади.Разом з родиною, синами Богданомі Романом бере участь у релігійних,національних програмах, шевчен-

ківських читаннях, вертепі, коляді.Завдяки о. Ярославу у нас тради-ційними стали свята Обжинків,щорічний фестиваль з нагоди праз-ника Святого ВолодимираВеликого.

Патріарх Святослав – главаУГКЦ, висловлюючись про місіюсучасного священика наголошує,що вона не завершується на душпа-стирській опіці,- священик 3-готисячоліття повинен бути особисті-стю, лідером-саме такими повиннібути греко-католицькі отці. ОтецьЯрослав у постійному русі, повенідей та задумів. І що найбільше вра-жає, - даючи ідею - перший береть-ся до праці, засукавши рукави,одягнувши робочий одяг на рівні зусіма трудиться на благо церкви ілюдей. Він навчає вірити в резуль-тат в ім’я Бога ідобра. З нимнадійно і радіс-но. Повчання,опіка, настанованашого отця неє голослівними.Добре вихованідіти- Роман,Наталія, Богдан,злагода в сім’ї,повага і любовдо батьків (щонедавно відійш-ли у вічність), шанобливе ставлен-ня до дружини Марії-є прикладомдля парафіян і особливо тим, комуще слід виховувати дітей, онуків,опікуватися родичами, шануватиукраїнські храми, плекати українсь-

ку мову, любити Україну-тут натеренах другої батьківщини.

Although there is a reliablenumber of publications dealing with thehistory of Ukrainian immigrants inAmerica, the topic is far from being com-prehensively covered. Authors of theseworks relied on material that was availableto them at the time. But, there is always

room and need to augment the informa-tion at hand especially if, as often happensduring research, new data and archivalmaterial turn up unexpectedly. It is amaz-ing how one small document, even oneinconspicuous pamphlet, can add valuableinsight and understanding of a subject mat-ter and enhance its historical data base.

The first two waves of Ukrainian immi-grants to America laid the foundation ofreligious, organizational, and social life forus – Ukrainian-Americans, or American-Ukrainians, born here, recent or long timeago arrivals. These foundations were sowell laid that even now it is possible for usto benefit from them in many apects. It istruly a wonder how these early Ukrainianimmigrants, members of a downtroddennation, from the lowest social classes, illit-erate or semi-literate, with just a handful ofcivic and religious educated leaders, wereable to do so much and to do it so effi-ciently.

Through observation of the democraticand organizational American systems, thenew immigrants adapted some aspects ofthese structures for the benefit of their owncommunities, namely, in order to strength-en them in their work for a common cause,to teach them the advantages of coopera-tion, to instill in them a sense of civic andsocial responsibility, and to guide them toa better way of life without abandoningtheir ethnic identity or cultural heritage.

The first organizational units that wereformed by the first immigrants were relat-ed to religious needs. They established

ARCHIVAL MATERIALS – ROADS TO DISCOVERY by Lubow Wolynetz, Curator parishes, built churches, organized choirs, eth-nic schools, brotherhoods, sisterhoods, and thelike. Next came the founding of various civic,political, and social clubs. All of these organi-zational units, prepared by-laws in order toachieve their goals more effectively.

Recently, our Museum and Library receiveda small publication, the By-laws of the RuskyiMolodechyi Kliub Postupovyi (The Ruthenian(Ukrainian) Progressive Youth Club) in JerseyCity, NJ, which was organized on October 22,1902. This By-law booklet was published in1910 at the Svoboda printing house which wasthen located on Hudson Street in New YorkCity. The booklet has a moving and inspiringforward reflecting the responsibilities, nuances,dilemmas, and stumbling blocks which youngUkrainian immigrants had to face at that timewhile trying to maintain their religious, ethnicidentity, andnational dig-nity. It waswritten byS t e f a nMilanowyczPresident ofthe Club inthe years1909-1910.In the reportsof theUkrainianN a t i o n a lAssociationConventionwe find thatStefan Milanowycz had been elected to theUNA Board as a member of the AuditingCommittee and also as the RecordingSecretary in the 1920s and 1930s. His daugh-ter Melanie had worked at the UNAHeadquarters for many years. She was amember of the Ukrainian Youth League ofNorth America (1933-1971) and had partici-pated in many cultural events of the Ukrainiancommunity.

We read in the introduction: “Dear Friend!Come to our meetings and bring a friend withyou, knowing that by doing this you will snatchaway not one, but many sons of our enslavedpeople from the hands of our enemies or theirideologies (moscophilism, orthodoxy (mean-ing the Russian Orthodox church),polonophilism, hungarianism)… Onlythrough such actions can we depend on thedevelopment of our society and at the sametime the future of the next generations… Beguardians of our national rights… Be patrioticbrothers who are not separated by envy, but

who together in unanimity plough the neglect-ed national field… So friend, be an outspokenand a brave Ukrainian patriot…Stand strong foryour national and organizational rights; do notallow anyone to make fun of or scorn all that isdear to us… The author quotes MykhailoHrushevsky “fight for the good and conquer allthat degrades our way of life, which subduesour national development”.

The Club chose as its patron the ArchangelMichael, so that all members like the Archangelwould dedicate themselves to fighting evil,darkness, enemies of God and our church, andthe enemies of our downtrodden, enslavednation.

The By-laws state who can be a member –any young man between the ages of 16 and 40.It also lists the goals of the Club which are: a)Moral, b) Material, c) Political, d) Social.

These goalsa r eexplained asfollows: TheMoral cate-gory includ-ed the organ-ization oflibraries ands c h o o l s ,l e n d i n gb o o k s ,developingtheatricalperformanc-es, initiatingl e c t u r e s ,

conducting singing rehearsals, supporting one’sGreek Catholic Church, and punctually con-tributing monthly church donations, and aidingmembers in legal matters. In the Material cate-gory, members should help each other in case ofillness, encourage members to take out lifeinsurance in the Rusky Narodny Soiuz(Ukrainian National Association), help mem-bers to find employment, encourage membersto join unions, and disseminate informationabout temperance. In the Political category,members should actively participate in politicalactivities especially during elections, organizepolitical rallies and meetings, help membersbecome American citizens. In the Social cate-gory members should seek mutual acquain-tance during club meetings, etc.

There are ten parts to the Club’s By-lawswhich enumerate the privileges and responsibil-ities of its members. In the last part it states thatin case of the Club’s dissolution, its monetaryresources are to be equally distributed betweenthe Greek-Catholic Church in Jersey City and

the community needs. The booklet alsoincludes an application of intention tobecome an American citizen, and ques-tions and answers about American historyand its government needed by every appli-cant when applying for citizenship.

As to how long this Club was in exis-

tence (except for Stefan Milanowycz) andhow many members it had, we do not asyet know. The important point is that aClub of this merit actually existed withsuch distinguished ideals and noteworthypurposes even though it was founded 113years ago. Some of the stumbling blockswhich they had to face in 1902, we are stillfacing in 2015. The founders of this Cluband similar societies and brotherhoods ofthose days, notwithstanding their limitededucation, and limited resources, weremotivated by the following: a great senseof social responsibility and generosity ofspirit always remembering the generalwelfare of their Ukrainian community, itsfuture generations, and the importance ofpreserving their identity, their ethnic andcultural heritage. As a result, they builtchurches, schools, national homes, found-ed political and cultural institutions andsocieties, and did all this in quite adverseand risky days. Even today we must makeuse of this inheritance which they have leftus. Sad to say, instead of preserving andmaintaining this legacy, some of it we neg-lect and sometimes even destroy. Ourpredecessors were guided by ideals ofdevotion, mutual cooperation, responsibil-ity, sacrifices for the common good of thecommunity in the present day and in itsfuture, and not by self-interest, selfishnessor greed. Can we do as much today? Whatkind of legacy will we bequeath to the nextgeneration?

(news.ugcc.ua) - On June 24th a delegation of the US Conference of Catholic Bishopsfinished a visit of solidarity and support concerning Ukraine. The Archbishop of Louisville, JosephKurtz, President of the USCCB with the Archbishop of Chicago, Blase J. Cupich, chair of theUSCCB Subcommittee for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, spent a few days in Ukraineto more accurately get acquainted with a situation.

They visited Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv to see with their own eyes the development of theChurch in Ukraine, that has been generously supported by American Catholics for 25 years. TheArchbishops met with religious and political leaders and spokenwith forced migrants in Kharkiv,young activists in Lviv, and students of Kyiv Three Saints Seminary.

A summary of a visit was given in a meeting with Archbishop Emeritus, His EminentBeatitude Lubomyr and the Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

The Head and Father of UGCC thanked all American Catholics for their support. Healso thanked the representatives of the delegation for coming and maintaining the Church andnation at a hard war time. “Thank you for being with us in time of sufferings and fear. Moral sol-idarity is just as important as financial support,” he mentioned.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav also said that today is a unique time for evangelization inUkraine. Ukrainians need and listen attentively to the Church’s voice. “The theme for our devel-opment strategy is the vibrant parish a place to encounter a living Christ. However, recently wehave witnessed the Maidan and the front line as places to encounter a living Christ. In suchmoments a society opens the doors to the Church and Church must have enough skills to enter,”stressed the Archbishop.

The Archbishop added that the spiritual renewal that UGCC touched Western Ukrainein 90’s, now it is coming to Central and Eastern Ukraine.

The members of a delegation shared the thoughts and experiences gained during theirshort but successful visit to Ukraine, with the Ukrainian hierarchs.

“We visited a camp of migrants in Kharkiv, their fate is tragic and grim, living in poorconditions, but supportive, accepting and joyful. During their meeting with the US Ambassadorto Ukraine we mentioned that an international community can do more, because it is not enoughto have just one of these camps,” stated Archbishop Blase Cupich.

For the delegation, it was also important to know the details of recent Ukrainian histo-ry, in order to share it to the Catholics in America. “We walked from St. Sophia Cathedral to theMaidan and it was very touching for us to see with our own eyes the traces of the struggle for dig-nity and freedom,” explained Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, who was visiting Ukraine for the first time.

cial schedule of Pope Francis’ visit to Cuba and the United States.The Pope’s first apostolic visit to both countries will take place from September 19-27.The day after his arrival to Jose Marti International Airport, the Holy Father will cele-

brate Mass at Revolution Square in Havana, followed by a meeting with President Raul Castroand an address to government authorities. He will then celebrate Vespers with priests, religious men& women, along with seminarians at Havana’s Cathedral and conclude with a youth meeting atthe Padre Felix Varela Cultural Center.

The following day, he will fly to the city of Holguín, where he will also celebrate Massand bless the city. In the afternoon, the Pope will depart for Santiago where he will be meeting withthe Bishops of the country and conclude with a prayer at the Shrine of Our Lady of El Cobre,patroness of Cuba.

On Sept. 22nd, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass and meet with families before depart-ing for Washington, D.C., where he will be welcomed in the afternoon at Andrews Air Force Base.

The following day, a welcoming ceremony will take place on the South Lawn of theWhite House, where he will meet with President Barack Obama. He will then meet with Bishopsat St. Matthew’s Cathedral. The day will culminate in the afternoon where he will preside at theCanonization Mass of Blessed Junipero Serra at the National Shrine of the ImmaculateConception.

On the morning of Sept. 24th, the Holy Father will make history as the first Pontiff toaddress a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress. He will then meet with the homeless at St. Patrick’sChurch before departing for New York City.

After his arrival at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Pope will cel-ebrate Vespers with clergy and religious men & women at the famed Cathedral of St. Patrick.

On Sept. 25th, the Pope will address the General Assembly of the United Nations. Fromthere, he will attend an interreligious meeting at Ground Zero, site of the deadly terrorist attacks onSeptember 11th, 2001. He will then visit Our Lady, Queen of Angels School in Harlem for a meet-ing with immigrant parents and their children. Finally, he will conclude the day with a Mass atMadison Square Garden.

On Sept. 26th, Pope Francis will depart for Philadelphia where he will celebrate Masswith Bishops, Clergy and Religious men and women of the state at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter andPaul.

In the afternoon, he will attend a Meeting for Religious Freedom with the Hispanic com-munity at Independence Mall. In the evening, he will arrive at the site of the World Meeting ofFamilies and participate at a prayer vigil.

On the final day of his visit, Pope Francis will meet in the morning with the visitingBishops attending the World Meeting. He will then meet with prisoners at the Curran-FromholdCorrectional Facility before celebrating the Closing Mass of the VIII World Meeting of Familiesat Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.

Finally, Pope Francis will meet with organizers, volunteers and benefactors beforedeparting for Rome on the evening of Sept. 27th.

SR. NIRMALA JOSHI, THE FIRST SUCCESSOR OF BLESSED TERESA OFCALCUTTA, PASSED AwAY

(ZENIT.org) Sr. Nirmala suffered from kidney failure and other complications. Despitebeing advised by doctors to undergo dialysis, the she chose to be with her sisters in her final hours.

Following her release from the hospital on Friday, Sr. Nirmala’s health declined and diedon Monday, June 20th, after midnight.

Born in 1934, Sr. Nirmala converted to Catholicism and shortly after joined theMissionaries of Charity.

She went to Panama and became one of the first Missionaries of Charity to head a mis-sion. In 1976, Sr. Nirmala started and led the contemplative branch of the Missionaries of Charityuntil her election as Mother Teresa’s successor in March 1997.

She served as Superior General of the congregation until March 25th, 2009. . .

Care of the EarthCare of the EarthGod created everything and everyone and said that it was all good! God gave people the responsibility to take care of all things thatGod made. Most of the time, we take care of Nature and the world pretty well, but sometimes we are not as careful as we shouldbe. We sometimes leave lights on when they don’t need to be on, or we throw our candy wrappers on the ground instead of into thetrash. We sometimes are not too nice to animals, we may throw rocks at them or yell at them. We don’t always eat our food, butthrow it away, forgetting that there are many people who have no food. What other things do we do or forget to do that may hurtthe earth or other people? Talk about taking caring care of the earth and creation with your family, what kinds of things can youdo to take care of the earth? Take a walk together and enjoy the flowers and the outdoors.

You will find a bird feeder that is easy to make at the bottom of the page, hang it in one of your trees to give the birds a special treat. There is also a prayer that Pope Francis wrote about takeing care of the world. Read it together as a family. Write a fam-ily prayer.

Attract a variety of birds to your backyard with this birdfeeder that will all but disappear when they discover it.

Materials Needed:• String • 1/2 of a Stale Bagel • 1 Teaspoon Peanut Butter • 1 Teaspoon Shortening • Bird Seed

Instructions:Cut a piece of string about 24" long. You can adjust thislength depending on where you want to hang it. Put one end of the string through the hole inthe bagel and tie both ends together to make a large loop to hang up your bird feeder with.Mix together the peanut butter and the shortening. Spread this mixture onto the flat side ofthe bagel. Pour the bird seed onto a plate. Press the peanut butter/shortening side of the bagelinto the bird seed.Hang this bagel bird feeder in a tree or anywhere outside and watch the birds make it disap-pear.

God Made EverythingIn the beginning there was nothing. God said, “ Let there

be light.” and the light scattered the darkness. God said, “ This isgood!” The dark was called ‘night’ and the light was called ‘day’.This was the 1st day.

God placed the sky above the world and said, “ This isgood!” This was the 2nd day.

Then God moved the water into one place and the dryland into another and called the water ‘sea’ and the dry land‘earth’. God made plants and flowers and trees to cover the landand looked at what was done and said, “This is good!” This wasthe 3rd day.

The next day, God created the sun and themoon and the stars and said, “This is good!” Thiswas the 4th day.

Spinning Modern Yarns

A long time ago, Iheard a story about avery famous Indian

elephant named Bozo. He was very large, beauti-ful and gentle. He would gently eat peanuts fromthe open palms of children, who would come tosee and feed him and they say that he would seemto smile as he ate the peanuts. But one day, forsome reason, Bozo changed. He almost killed theman who cleaned his cage. He became stubbornand nasty and even charged at the children whocame to see and feed him at the circus. The circusowner knew he would have to destroy this once-gentle beast.

In order to raise money for a new ele-phant, the circus owner had and terrible idea. Onthe day that the elephant was to be executed, withan area filled to capacity, three men aimed theirrifles at Bozo’s head.

Just before they were about to shoot, ashort and stubby man in a brown hat stepped outof the crowd and said to the elephant's owner, "Sir,this is not necessary. Bozo is not a bad elephant."

"But he is a dangerous elephant and wemust kill him before he kills someone." said theelephant’s owner.

"Please sir, give me two minutes alonein his cage," the man pleaded, "and I'll prove to youthat you are wrong and that he is not bad."

After some more discussion and a fterthe man signed a statement absolving the circus ofany liability, should he be in any way hurt by theelephant, the circus owner finally agreed to allowthe man inside Bozo's cage.

The man removed his brown hat andwalked into the cage of the huge, angry elephant.But, before the elephant could charge at him, theman began to gently speak to him. Bozo appearedto become calm and quiet upon hearing the man'swords. Nearby spectators could also hear the man,but they could not understand him, for he spoke aforeign language. Soon the great animal began totremble, whine and throw his head about. Then thestranger walked up to Bozo and stroked his trunk.The great elephant tenderly wrapped his trunkaround the man, lifted him up and carried himaround his cage before carefully depositing himback at the door. Everyone applauded.

As the cage door closed behind him, theman said to Bozo's owner, "You see, he is a goodelephant. His problem is that he is an Indian ele-phant and understands the Indian language." Heexplained that Bozo had become confused andfrightened because he could not understand thepeople who were taking care of him. He neededsomeone who could speak his language. "I sug-gest, sir, that you find someone, here in London,who speaks Indian and have him come talk to yourelephant, every so often. If you do, you should

have no problems."The man picked up his brown hat and

walked away. When the circus owner looked atthe signature on the note absolving the circus ofany responsibility should the man be injured whileinside the elephant's cage, the statement wassigned--Rudyard Kipling.

We cannot survive without the ability tocommunicate to those around us. It is humannature, and, the nature of our pets, no matter howlarge or small they may be.

How many problems are resolvedwhen we talk about them.

How many issues cease to exist whenwe are able to understand one another.

It is not necessarily an issue of speak-ing different languages, it is, though, an issue ofnot speaking and understanding the languagewe share with others.

We need to take time to truly commu-nicate with one another; to share what is impor-tant to us, what we believe, who we are. We needto take time to discuss the things that are impor-tant to us and not just assume that others think aswe do or can read our minds.

This is where problems begin. This iswhere we can miss out on learning from anotherand perhaps, growing a little more. This is wherelove and respect among us gets lost and compe-tition and control can take over.

As we take time to vacation and restduring these summer months, may we take timeto talk--about the things that matter to us; aboutour hopes and dreams; about our beliefs andfaith.

Especially, may we take time to listen--to our family members, to our friends and co-workers, and to our God. May our summertimechats bring us to a greater understanding andlove of one another and a greater understandingof ourselves.
