Fourth Sunday of Easter – May 3, 2020
Dear Friends,
After seven weeks of widespread isolation and restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic, each day happily brings more hopeful news of health improvements and life opening up. We welcome the month of May with its lovely flowers which help us continue to celebrate the joy of Easter.
May is such a beautiful month, in which we celebrate the important role of the Blessed Mother in our life and in the life of the Church. It is a month in which special honor and devotion is accorded to the Blessed Mother.
I encourage all of our parishioners to take up the daily spiritual exercise of praying the Rosary especially in the month of May.
Each week in May, on Thursdays, from 3:30 PM to 3:45 PM, we invite all parishioners to join us for the communal recitation of the Rosary utilizing internet Zoom application. Please consult elsewhere in the Parish Bulletin or our Parish webpage for more information about accessing the Rosary group online on Thursday afternoons. All are welcome.
As we have move through the beautiful month of May, a month traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Mother, I encourage our parishioners to take up also the wonderful spiritual exercises of praying daily the beautiful Marian prayer called the Memorare:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother; to thee do we come; before thee we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer them. Amen.
What a beautiful prayer of confidence in the motherly care and love that Our Lady has for each one of us. I invite you all to add the Memorare to your spiritual arsenal calling upon the Blessed Mother not only for our daily needs, but especially in moments of great need.
I wish you a happy week ahead! Let us strive together to grow in holiness! More good things to come!
Let us strive together to grow in holiness. More good things to come! Have a joyful week ahead!
Sincerely in the Risen Lord, Fr. Bill Donovan, Pastor

Fourth Sunday of Easter 7
Building Family Bonds during COVID-19 Due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, families have been faced with the challenge of establishing a ‘new normal’ in their daily lives. The disruptions that families experience with the closure of schools, child care centers, workplaces, as well as many other services, can be a cause of tension and distress. Moreover, churches have suspended the public celebration of Masses and other liturgical services for the faithful.
Whatever your family situation, there is an opportunity to find grace in the midst of this crisis. Families can use this time as an invitation to focus on our relationships and on building strong family bonds.
Here are a few suggestions on how to use this time well:
Pray Together Set consistent times in the day to gather as a family for morning prayers, night prayers, and other
prayers in the home.
Pray the Rosary – here’s a tutorial if you need a refresher. Try starting with just one decade and offer it for an intention important to your family.
Meditate on the Scriptures – Consider setting time aside and praying with the daily Mass readings as a family.
Celebrate and observe Sunday with a on-line Mass – check listings on your diocesan website or EWTN.com.
Build and Fortify Your Relationships Set aside time to pray with your spouse – Check out our Four Simple Steps to Pray with Your Spouse.
Consider using extra time to enrich your marriage – several of our marriage encouragement and enrichment resources have online courses available.
Be Kind – Pope Francis’ resolutions for couples are a great place to start.
Write a mission statement for your family.
Have Fun Together Do something fun as a family – bake a pie, bring out a board game, get creative with craft supplies, or
take a nature walk at a nearby trail.
Plan a celebration for feast days – celebrate a feast day with some home made baked goods,
Don’t stop date nights – here are some suggestions, most of which can be done at home.
Start building a family photo album or photobook. Organize your photos and plan some home videos.

SAINTS FOR US! Saint Dominic Savio (1842-1857) Feast Day: May 6
Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined Saint John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12. He impressed Don Bosco with his desire to be a priest and to help him in his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate Conception. As a youth, Dominic spent hours in prayer which he referred to as “my distractions.” He was often afraid that the other boys would laugh at him. Dominic would say, “I can’t do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be done for the greater glory of God.” Dominic’s health was always frail and led to lung problems. He was sent home to recuperate, but his condition only worsened. He died on March 9, 1857 at the age of 15. Saint John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life. Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint. Pope Saint Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead with his cause. Dominic was canonized in 1954 and is considered the patron of choirboys. Saint Dominic Savio, pray for us.

Prayer During an Epidemic Lord Jesus, hear our pleas, our good shepherd and divine physician. We
implore your mercy in the wake of an outbreak of serious illness and disease. Guide our efforts to prevent contagion and make preparations to care for those most vulnerable. Assist all professionals and volunteers who work to eradicate
the epidemic now spreading. May our actions be marked by your steadfast love and selfless service and never by panic or fear.
Bestow your comfort and healing to the sick, sustain and strengthen them by your grace. May they know your closeness as they carry the cross of illness.
And may all whom you have called from this life come to worship you eternally with all the saints as you grant consolation and peace to their
mourners. Amen. Holy Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for us. St. Joseph, Hope of the Sick, pray for us.
St. Rocco, protector against epidemics, pray for us. St. John Vianney, our parish patron saint, pray for us.
All parishioners are encouraged to pray this daily.

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY PARISH NEW WAYS OF SERVING OUR PEOPLE
During this difficult period for our country, we are grateful to God that the mission of His Church continues.
We wanted to share how we are adjusting in order to serve, care, and minister to our people in these challenging times:
1. Those who are dying are continuing to be attended by our Pastor with the Last Rites of the Holy Church.
2. Those who have died are able to be buried with Christian burial rites by our Pastor; but public Funeral Masses or Memorial Masses for the deceased will be celebrated in the future.
3. Our Parish has launched a Parish Emergency Food Program. We want to make sure that our people remain safe and have the necessities. See our Parish webpage for more details about our Parish Emergency Food Program.
In addition to supporting our parishioners with this Parish Emergency Food Program, we will also continue to support others outside of our parish with our Caring for Friends Food Program.
4. Daily Mass is being offered by our Pastor for the announced special intentions as well as the general intention for the health and safety of our people; the Divine Office and the Holy Rosary is also prayed daily by our Pastor for our people.
5. Confessions (affectionately called “drive-through” confessions) have been a great success. We will continue to make the graces of the Sacrament of Penance available to our people in this manner which preserves physical /social distancing. Latest information, including confession times, will be published on our Parish webpage (www.sjvgladwyne.com)
6. Since in-person meetings are not possible at this time, the Parish Offices have been closed to the public; but we have been contacting our people by employing various communications media: Electronic Parish Bulletin, Email blasts, Parish webpage, Par ish Facebook, and meetings via Zoom and Facetime.
If you have not been getting our Parish emails with informational updates, please contact us by calling the rectory with your preferred email address.
10 May 3, 2020
7. The Sacred Liturgies for Holy Week (Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday) we made available and accessible to our people online. Consult our Parish webpage for more information.
8. We are planning to make our Parish Sunday liturgies accessible to our people via communications media. Sunday liturgies will be available at 4:00 PM on Saturday and will be accessible at www.sjvgladwyne.com. In addition we will email the Sunday Mass to our parishioners at 4:00 PM on Saturday.
9. While our 110 children from Grades 1 to 7 of our PREP program will not be meeting in person for Wednesday afternoon classes, our PREP program will continue using social media. Our dedicated PREP catechists and PREP administrators will be working with our parents and children to assist in completing the catechetical material for the year.
Following the recommendation of the Governor, our Parish PREP program children and catechists will not meet in person this pastoral and academic year. But while our children and catechists will not meet physically for the remainder of this school year, the important mission of learning and sharing the faith with our children will continue using social media by our catechists. Our PREP administrator will be working closely in the coming weeks with our parents to ensure that they have all the content which needs to be covered for the completion of this year’s material.
10. We are working with our young engaged couples who have had to postpone their weddings to another time.
11. Lots of Catholic religious content (including movies, programs, and books) are available to our parishioners using the on-line service called FORMED.ORG. See elsewhere in our Par ish Bulletin or our Par ish webpage for more information on accessing FORMED.ORG.
12. While our staff has remained employed but largely not present on campus, and while bills continue to arrive, we are encouraging our parishioners to make their Sunday contributions by signing up for on-line giving. We are particularly grateful for our gracious parishioners who were able to sign up for on-line giving.
Please keep healthy and remain safe!
May Saint John Vianney watch over our people!
God bless us all!
Fourth Sunday of Easter 11
The Good Shepherd The 4th century statuette of the Good Shepherd, which was restored in the 18th century, is one of the famous sculptures in the Vatican Museum from the early Christian period.
Here Fr. Donovan, our Pastor, has taken a modern selfie beside the beautiful classical sculpture of the Good Shepherd at the Vatican Museum.
In the Gospel of John, Our Lord Jesus is identified as the Good Shepherd. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus teaches employing the Parable of the Lost Sheep. In the parable, Jesus speaks about how the good shepherd is the one who searches and retrieves the lost sheep. And when he finds the lost sheep, the good shepherd places the sheep on his shoulders carrying him back to safety.
The Good Shepherd was an early symbol of Jesus.
Each parish has one Pastor. The term “Pastor” is the Latin term for word “shepherd” and is taken directly into our English language. So, the Pastor (the Shepherd) is the one who cares for the flock of the parish protecting and guiding them. The Pastor of the Parish is called to be a symbol of the Good Shepherd, who is Jesus, the One who lays down His life for others.
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is likewise known as Good Shepherd Sunday because the Gospel is always taken from the Gospel of John on the Good Shepherd.
The beautiful image of the Good Shepherd conveys the sublime reality that Jesus knows us and loves us: He is caring for us, accompanying us, protecting us, and guiding us.
