From the Pastor’s Desktop Dear Parishioners, Fr. Vincent Musaby’Imana: Fr. Vincent’s funeral was held at St. James Church on Tuesday February 11. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone celebrated the Mass. I concelebrated along with other priests. Let’s keep Fr. Vincent in our hearts and prayers. May the good Lord give him eternal life. May Fr. Vincent join the angels and saints. May the good Lord give his family and friends comfort and consolation. Lent on the Horizon: As you know, February 26 is Ash Wednesday. It might be a good idea to start pre-paring for what we might like to do during Lent and use the Lenten season for our spiritual and physical well-being. If possible, we might attempt attending daily Mass during Lent. We might think about reading the Word of God daily. How about as a parish each one of us takes up the Gospel of Luke to read and re-flect on during the Lenten season. We might read each day a chapter or half a chapter of the total 24 chapters of Luke’s gospel. We can start thinking about what we can do to help others, especially those who are in need. Is there a place where we can volunteer to help others? We need help with Sunday hospitality to help set up and clean up --- any volunteers? How about our relationships with others to bring love and for-giveness? Let’s also look at our physical needs in terms of healthy food and exercise. So, let’s start plan-ning … Word of God this Sunday: The gospel reading is from the famous Sermon on the Mount. Jesus says, “you have heard it said … but I say to you …” Refer-ring to the Old Testament laws, Jesus says that he wants us to go to the root of everything and live au-thentic lives based on love. Jesus’s new law calls us to the reevaluation of our relationship with God and oth-ers. If we love God and others, what should our values be? What should we do and say to one another? How should we live our lives to find peace and fulfillment? Let’s think about these important things and seek God’s guidance, light, and grace. A Story About Peace: A crow once flew into the sky with a piece of meat in its beak. Twenty other crows set out in hot pursuit and began to attack it viciously. When the crow finally dropped the meat, its pursuers left it alone and flew off shrieking after the morsel. Said the crow: “I’ve lost the meat and gained this

peaceful sky.” Said a Zen monk, “When my house burnt down I got an unobstructed view of the moon at night!” Why don’t you try a Haiku?: “Haiku” is a tradition-al form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 sylla-bles and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. Here’s my little “religious” Haiku: “Lake Galilee shores, I pick pebbles His feet smoothed, Stony heart no more!” You want another Haiku from me? Here it is: “Rain on lotus leaves, Sil-ver sliding and slipping, Life free flowing love.” Have fun! Try a few Haiku poems! You’d love it. You could write one each day. You can make it concrete. You could also try abstract concepts, like in abstract paintings. Try to avoid simile (the word “like”). Try metaphors. Instead of saying, for example, “your face is like the moon, say “your face is the moon.”!!! Writ-ing little poems like this will bring out the creativity within us. We all have poetic potential within us. Food for Thought: A Short Course in Human Re-lations: The six most important words: “I admit that I was wrong.” The five most important words: “You did a great job.” The four most important words: “What do you think?” The three most important words: “Could you please …” The two most important words: “Thank you.” The most important word: “We.” The least important word: “I”. Pope John the 23rd Jokes: 1. Not long after he was elected pope, Saint John was walking in the streets of Rome. A woman passed him and said to her friend, “My God, he’s so fat!” Overhearing what she said, he turned around and replied, “Madame, I trust you un-derstand that the papal conclave is not exactly a beau-ty contest.” 2. When a cardinal complained that a rise in Vatican salaries meant a particular usher earned as much as the cardinal, the pope remarked: “That usher has 10 children; I hope the cardinal doesn’t.” 3. When he went to visit a friend at the nearby Hospital of the Holy Spirit in the evening, the nun answering the door said: “Holy Father, I'm the mother superior of the Ho-ly Spirit.” He replied: “Lucky you! What a job! I’m just the ‘servant of the servants of God.’” Your Friend & Pastor, Fr. Charles Puthota

Planning to be Married at St. Veronica Church? The policy of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco states that arrange-ments for marriage are to be made at least six months in advance. These months are meant to give couples the opportunity for prayerful reflection on Christian marriage and for consideration of their future life as “two who will be made one.”

Your first step is to call our parish office at 650-588-1455 to schedule an appointment to meet with a member of the clergy.

During the initial meeting, preliminary information will be taken and an evaluation of your readiness to marry will be assessed. Other information will be provided regard-ing the Marriage Preparation Program and FOCUS questionnaire.

You will also have the opportunity to set up future meetings with clergy, our wedding coordinator and our music director who will all work with you in preparing your spe-cial day.

Calendars fill up quickly and schedules get busy, so don't delay in setting up your initial wedding appointment.

Seeking Angel Choir Assistants!

Our Music Director, Christopher Lindstrom, is looking for additional adults to assist with the Saint Veronica Angel Choir. Ideal candidates do not need to have a background in music, but would need to be available for Thursday re-hearsals (3:00-4:30 p.m. during the school year, excluding holiday breaks) and when the Angel Choir sings at Mass (typically, though not always, the 10 a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of the month during the school year). Those interested are asked to contact Christopher at 650-588-1455 ext. 308 for more important information!

Guidelines from the Archdiocese of San Francisco Office of Worship

Winter Cold and Flu Season

As always, the faithful are reminded to use common good sense in the reception of Holy Com-munion during the annual cold and flu season. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace, but instead offer another appropriate gesture. Likewise if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace with a handshake for fear of infection, you should feel no pressure to do so. All of us must be aware of such sensitive mat-ters in the intimate life of the Christian community and we should expect that some will refrain from shaking hands during the sign of peace out of care for our well-being and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety.

Liturgy and Illness

Please be aware that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply to those who are ill, especially those who suffer from contagious dis-ease. It is a sign of consideration for others that those with flu-like symptoms remain at home. For the convenience of those who are homebound, or unable to attend Mass because of illness or infirmi-ty, Mass is broadcast each Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m. on Comcast channels 8 & 20, and KTSF 26.

Reflecting on the Word Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time The gospel of Jesus is a gospel of grace. The new law that Jesus gives is not a written code, but is the Holy Spirit who works within us to transform us into God’s children, adopted into God’s family not because of our own merits but rather out of God’s abundant love. This does not mean that the gospel of Jesus places no demands on us. As today’s Gos-pel reading makes clear, if anything the new law of Christ is more stringent in its demands than the law of Moses. It calls not simply for outward conformi-ty, but rather for an inward transformation in which we are conformed to God’s Spirit, the Spirit who, as Paul says in the second reading, “scrutinizes every-thing, even the depths of God.” We all know that it is much easier to go through the motions and grudgingly obey a rule than it is to truly grasp the reason for the rule and let it become part of the fabric of our lives. A child might simply follow a rule to avoid punishment or to obtain a re-ward, but with maturity and life experience comes an appreciation for the reason behind the rule. The new law requires the hard work of inner transfor-mation, by which we grow into the wisdom and spir-itual maturity of which Paul speaks. The hard work that the new law of Jesus asks of us does not make it any less a gospel of grace, for what Jesus ultimately asks is that we let his Spirit work within us. Our task is to get out of the way and let the Spirit guide us.

For Consideration & Discussion What do I consider the signs of a spiritually ma-

ture person?

Are there rules that I follow without really grasp-ing the reason behind the rule?

Responding to the Word Holy God, send us the Spirit of wisdom, so that we may grow into a spiritual maturity that will ena-ble us to live the demands of the gospel. Amen. - Living the Word
