We Invite and Welcome New Junior Lectors to Join the Ministry…. As we begin another school year, we would like to invite and encourage our young parishioners (6th grade and

up) to become part of our Junior Lectors group. You would do the readings at the Sunday, 10:30a.m. Mass.

along with other Junior Lectors, and will receive a schedule ahead of the date you are scheduled to read. It

is a wonderful ministry, and we feel you will not only find it very rewarding, but a way to build confidence

while you practice the skill of public speaking, so it becomes natural and comfortable. Please call the

rectory (733-5823) if you are interested and would like further information.

VOCATIONS - Twenty second Sunday in Ordinary Time Humility is needed for those who choose to serve. Are you able to recognize your gifts and offer them in humble

service? (Luke 14:1, 7-14) If you think God is calling you, please email [email protected]. Website:

Prayer for Those Who Labor

Bless, O God, all those who labor. Whether they are compensated by paycheck or pride, let them know their true worth in your eyes. May all workers be gifted with a sense of service to the common good, and graced with the satisfaction of a job well done. Thank you for those whose work provides protection, comfort, healing, and relief from suffering and stress. May all of our labors be for your goodness and glory, O God. Amen.

Are you familiar with the Holy Name Prayer Line?

It is a group of 30+ parishioners (called the Prayer Line Partners) who pray for anyone who is in need of

prayers for any reason. It could be an illness, loss of a loved one, etc., or a special intention. We invite you to share your prayer needs by calling Ann at the rectory (733-5823). You don’t even have to give us your name –

just who (first name only, or you can say a woman, a man, a parishioner) the group would pray for and a very brief reason (i.e., surgery, illness, special intention, etc.) for the request. We compile a daily list (Monday through Friday) and email it to the partners who have emails, and it is called in to those who do this by phone (first

person calls the second, and so on). Please contact Ann at the rectory, 733-5823, with your interest.

STEWARDSHIP

Collections for August 17 & 18, 2019 total $8,631.07! (This total includes the $860.40 collected for the Assumption.)

Many thanks to all of you!

Sr. Melinda continues to seek DONATIONS of individually wrapped cookies, small candy bars,

Tootsie rolls, lollipops, granola, and packs of peanut butter crackers for the candy bags that our

parish is providing to Holy Cross to enhance their Sandwich Ministry for the homeless. Thank you!

The OPEN PANTRY is in need of Oatmeal or Hot (Healthy) Cereal, Peanut Butter, Canned

meats and Spaghetti Sauce (in plastic jars or cans, if possible) But please, we ask that you do not bring any:

Perishables of any kind (bread, potatoes, fresh vegetables, etc.), pudding or Jello. Pick-ups are only done when we are at capacity, so perishables will go bad.

We cannot give them partially used or opened items

Also, please check expiration dates. We cannot give them items that have expired.

Thank you very much for your kindness and understanding!

SERVICE

LOAVES AND FISHES

This month our day falls on Labor Day, when members of our parish will gather at South Congregational Church on Maple Street to serve a meal to the hungry of our city. We are sure you will find it to be a positive and

rewarding experience, and it is so organized, it won’t take a lot of your time. American Chop Suey is the meal

we serve, and you are welcome to use your own recipe. If you can help with the cooking or serving, please call Ann at the rectory, 733-5823, or if you decide to come and don’t have time to call ahead, that’s fine, too. Meals can either be dropped off between 4:15 and 4:30p.m., or stay and serve and you’ll be on your way home in an hour. You’ll find plenty of safe, off-street parking right in the church parking lot.

Special Request: On Labor Day we have fewer parishioners to cook and serve because of the holiday. We truly hope you may be able to “fill in” by either cooking and/or serving. Thank you!!

Concerning Hospital Visits If someone in your family is in the hospital and you want to have Fr. David, Fr. Joyce or Sister Melinda visit, please call the rectory at 733-5823 and leave a message for either father or Sr. Melinda, (ext. 130). Unfortunately, a parishioner’s name is not always on the daily list of Holy Name patients; so we ask that you give us a call with the information (name, which building, room #, etc.). This way you or your loved one will be assured of a visit.

EDUCATION

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION “We Need You! (Yes, You!)”

Please consider sharing your faith with the youth of our Parish. We are very much in need of catechists for kindergarten and middle school grades, as well as classroom aides and substitutes. We will provide the training and resources. Join us this fall–we all have something to offer! Registration forms for all grades (K-11) are available at all entrances of the church and at the Rectory. Please note: Children (of Holy Name parishioners) attending Parochial School must register with our Religious Education Office to attend classes for the sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation. Blessing of the Catechists takes place at the 10:30a.m. Mass on September 15th Classes begin September 15th

Tips on how to Avoid Scams from Mark Dupont at the Springfield Diocese

This summer we have heard of numerous and varied phone call, internet and text mail scams. In many instances the scammers have stepped up their game, researching parish/school/clergy/staff info online

(parish bulletins, parish websites etc) which then allows them to customize the scam to seem more legitimate.

Here are a few helpful hints: If it seems too good to be true, chances are it is TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

If you get a phone call or text/email inquiry regarding a utility bill or credit card issue NEVER respond

directly to that caller/sender or to any phone or email info that is provided. If you aren't sure whether it's a

scam, look up an old bill or get official phone number from 411 and call that number to verify. If any inquiry requests payment in the form of gift cards- IT'S A SCAM.

Alert your parish/school community that you never solicit via email or text messages and that they should

view any such communication/inquiry as suspicious and contact the parish/school office directly.

Finally, ALWAYS BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) email addresses when sending large distribution emails. Better

yet consider using an email sender service like Constant Contact. Sending emails TO or even CC to multiple email addresses exposes everyone's email address to potential hackers.
