It was late in the summer when Leonard noticed that a new family had moved into his neighborhood. Leonard liked nothing better than making new friends – except for maybe basketball! So he grabbed his basketball and ran across the street to meet his new neighbors. He knocked on the door and after a few moments, a young girl with long dark braids, curious eyes, and a happy smile opened the door.

Era tarde en el verano cuando Leonardo notó que una familia nueva se había mudado a su vecindario. No había nada que le gustara más a Leonardo que hacer nuevos amigos - ¡excepto quizás el baloncesto! “Welcome to the neighborhood!” Leonard said. “My name is Leonard and I live across the street. Would you like to play basketball with me?”“Hi!” the girl replied. “I’m Linda and I have a brother named Reuben. We’re finishing up school right now, but we’d love to play when we’re done!”“Sure,” Leonard said. “Come on over when you’re ready.”

“¡Bienvenidos al vecindario!” dijo Leonardo. “Me llamo Leonardo y vivo al otro lado de la calle. ¿Quieres jugar al baloncesto conmigo?”.“¡Hola!” respondió la chica. “Soy Linda y tengo un hermano llamado Reuben. Estamos terminando la escuela ahora, pero nos encantaría jugar cuando hayamos terminado!”.“Claro” dijo Leonardo. “Vengan cuando estén listos.”

Leonard walked back to his house. He was a little confused. He didn’t start school for another week. And he had to take a school bus to get there. What did Linda mean when she said, “We’re finishing up school?” he wondered. Were they playing a game? He played a while longer until Linda and Reuben came running across the street.

Leonardo regresó a su casa. Estaba un poco confundido. El no empezaba la escuela hasta una semana más. Y tenía que tomar un autobús escolar para llegar allí. ¿Qué quería decir Linda cuando dijo: “Estamos terminando la escuela?” se preguntó. ¿Estaban jugando un juego? Reuben was a friendly boy with dark hair and glasses. After they said hello, Leonard tossed him the basketball. “What did you mean when you said you were finishing up school?” Leonard asked. “School doesn’t start until next week. Were you playing a game?”Linda laughed and caught the basketball as it bounced off the hoop. “Nope. We’re homeschooled!” She dribbled the ball then took a shot and scored. “Woohoo!” Linda cheered.

Reuben era un niño amigable con pelo oscuro y anteojos. Después de saludarse, Leonardo le pasó el balón. “Linda, ¿qué querías decir cuando mencionaste que terminaban la escuela?” preguntó Leonardo. “La escuela no comienza hasta la próxima semana. ¿Estaban jugando un juego?”. “What do you mean you’re homeschooled?” Leonard asked. He grabbed the ball and dribbled around Reuben.“We don’t go to school like a lot of other kids,” Reuben replied. “Instead, our parents teach us at home.” Then he stole the basketball away from Leonard. “Why would they do that?” Leonard asked, chasing after Reuben. “Lots of reasons! But mainly because we can learn in Spanish or English, and our family travels a lot. Don’t worry, we love it!” Linda said.

“¿Qué quieres decir con que son educados en casa?” preguntó Leonardo. Agarró el balón y dribló alrededor de Reuben.“No vamos a la escuela como muchos otros niños” respondió Reuben. “En lugar de eso, nuestros padres nos enseñan en casa”. Luego le robó el baloncesto a Leonardo.“¿Por qué hacen eso?” preguntó Leonardo, persiguiendo a Reuben.“¡Por muchas razones! Pero principalmente porque podemos aprender en español o en inglés, y nuestra familia viaja mucho. ¡No te preocupes, nos encanta!” dijo Linda.

“What sort of things do you study?” Leonard asked when the ball swished through the net. Reuben scored. “The same things you do,” he responded. “Maybe more! We study math, history, science, grammar. It’s fun to learn at home! We can also study things we’re interested in, like our family heritage and helicopters. We can go fast or slow. And we can take as long as we want to study something.”

“¿Qué clase de cosas estudian?” preguntó Leonardo cuando el balón pasó con un zumbido por la red. Reuben encestó. “Lo mismo que tú” le respondió. “¡Quizás más! Estudiamos matemáticas, historia, ciencias, gramática. ¡Es divertido aprender en casa! También podemos estudiar cosas que nos interesan, como nuestro patrimonio familiar y los helicópteros. Podemos ir rápido o lento. Y podemos tomar el tiempo que queramos para estudiar algo”.

“Like sharks!” Linda shouted as she threw the ball to Leonard. “And sea snails...and starfish! For science, we’re learning about ocean life.” Reuben threw his hands up and tried to block Leonard. “Hey, good shot, Leonard!” Leonard had made a basket, but he was too curious about his new friends to notice. “Thanks,” he mumbled. “But aren’t you guys lonely?” he asked. “Don’t you wish you had friends?” Reuben and Linda laughed.

“¡Cómo tiburones!” gritó Linda mientras le tiró el balón a Leonardo. “¡Y caracoles de mar... y estrellas de mar! En la clase de ciencia, estamos aprendiendo acerca de la vida del océano”.Reuben levantó las manos e intentó bloquear a Leonardo. “¡Oye, buen disparo, Leonardo!”Leonardo había hecho una canasta, pero tenía demasiada curiosidad sobre sus nuevos amigos que ni se dió cuenta. “Gracias” murmuró. “¿Pero no se sienten solos?” preguntó.” ¿No les gustaría tener amigos?” Reuben y Linda se rieron.

They stopped playing and sat down against Leonard’s garage to drink some water. “We have tons of friends!” she replied. “We get together with other homeschoolers several times a month. We do lots of field trips together, celebrate holidays, and participate in science fairs.”“Yeah, and we do sports and clubs, too,” Reuben added. “I love robotics! My club gets together to build different things every month.”

Dejaron de jugar y se sentaron contra el garaje de Leonardo para beber un poco de agua. “Tenemos muchos amigos” respondió Linda. “Nos reunimos con otros estudiantes que aprenden en casa varias veces al mes. Hacemos muchas excursiones juntos, celebramos los días festivos y participamos en ferias científicas”.“Sí, y también hacemos deportes y participamos en clubes” agregó Reuben. “¡A mí me encanta la robótica! Mi club se reúne para construir cosas diferentes cada mes”.

“So, do you get a summer break?” Leonard asked with a worried tone.“Sure we do,” Reuben said. “Our state laws say that we have to study at least 180 days each school year. Linda and I start early to get a jump on school work so that we don’t have to do our lessons while we travel.” “Oh! And we have to take an end of the year test,” Linda said with excitement. “Really? We do, too,” said Leonard.

“Entonces, ¿tienen un descanso de verano?” preguntó Leonardo con un tono preocupado.“Claro que sí” dijo Reuben. “Nuestras leyes estatales dicen que tenemos que estudiar por lo menos 180 días cada año escolar. Linda y yo empezamos temprano para adelantarnos en el trabajo escolar y así no tengamos que hacer nuestras lecciones mientras viajamos”.“¡Oh! Y tenemos que tomar una prueba de fin de año” dijo Linda con entusiasmo. “¿De verdad? Nosotros también” dijo Leonardo.

“My mom sits us at our dining room table and starts a timer. I love racing the clock!” said Linda. “We go over the test afterward and my mom makes notes before she mails our results in.”Leonard was amazed. “I never knew that school could be done at home!” “Do you want to come over to see our school room?” Reuben asked. “I just finished unpacking our awesome seashell collection.”

“Mamá nos sienta en la mesa del comedor y pone un cronómetro. Me encanta correr contra el reloj!”dijo Linda. “Después repasamos la prueba y mamá toma notas antes de enviar nuestros resultados”.Leonardo estaba asombrado. “¡No sabía que la escuela se podía hacer en casa!”.“¿Quieres venir a ver nuestro cuarto de estudios?” preguntó Reuben. “Acabo de terminar de desempacar nuestra impresionante colección de conchas marinas”.

Leonard quickly agreed and the three of them ran across the street. “Mom, this is our neighbor Leonard. He’s not homeschooled but we would like to show him our school room, would that be alright?” asked Reuben. His mom smiled and nodded. “Sure! It’s nice to meet you, Leonard.” Leonard followed his new friends into their classroom.

A large desk was in the middle of the room and there were bookshelves on every wall. He spied a huge seashell collection displayed on a shelf above their fireplace. A miniature solar system dangled from the ceiling in one corner of the room. Two large dry-erase boards were hanging from the walls with math formulas and grammar rules written on them. Books were everywhere, both in English and Spanish!

Había un gran escritorio en el centro del cuarto y libreros en cada pared. Leonardo observó una enorme colección de conchas marinas que se exhibía en un estante sobre su chimenea. Un sistema solar en miniatura colgaba del techo en una esquina de la habitación. Dos pizarras colgaban de las paredes con fórmulas matemáticas y reglas gramaticales escritas sobre ellas. ¡Habían libros por todas partes, tanto en inglés como en español!

“We have a game day once a week,” said Reuben pulling out his favorite board game. “It might be one that boosts our math skills, such as a card game, or one where we learn about different countries.”“Wow!” Leonard said. “I never knew you could learn all this at home! He glanced at the clock hanging on the wall.”

“Tenemos un día de juego una vez a la semana” dijo Reuben sacando su juego de mesa favorito. “A veces es un juego que aumenta nuestras habilidades matemáticas, como un juego de cartas, o un juego donde aprendemos sobre diferentes países”.“¡Vaya!” dijo Leonardo. “¡Nunca me imaginé que podría aprender todo esto en casa!”. Miró el reloj que colgaba de la pared.

“I’m afraid I have to get back home for dinner now, but thanks for inviting me over!” “You’re welcome! It was great meeting you! Come back anytime!” Linda exclaimed. As Leonard headed back home, he thought about how nice it was to make new friends and learn how different, yet the same, their lives were from his own. He looked forward to learning more about them and sharing some of his own life with them, too!

“¡Lamentablemente me tengo que regresar a casa para la cena, pero gracias por invitarme!”“¡De nada! ¡Fue genial conocerte! ¡Vuelve cuando quieras!” exclamó Linda.Cuando Leonardo iba de regreso a su casa, pensó en lo bueno que era hacer nuevos amigos y aprender lo diferentes y al mismo tiempo lo similares que eran sus vidas. ¡Esperaba aprender más sobre ellos, y también compartir un poco de su propia vida con ellos!
