Online classes are a very tangible reality of LCC studentlife, withallthebenefitsandfrustrations. With distant learning being an essential part of the today’sundergraduateeducation, whatdowethinkand, mostimportantly, knowaboutonlineclassesat LCC?

Fact 1: Out of all available class seats across all majors 15% are online, while the same statistic for the Business Administration major is 29%.

The number of on-line courses offered atLCChasgrownfrom 9 in Fall 2008 to 17 in Spring 2010. Among those classes, some are intention-ally designed for the onlinemodel, whileothers are forced into the online format due to circum-stances. Marlene Wall calls it the band-aid approach. The general student opinion is: “Online=bad,oncampus=good.”Butthetruthisifcourseswerenotofferedonline,manyofuswouldmissoutonmorethanjustadistantlearningopportunity.Manycourseswouldsimplybecomeunavailable.

Fact 2: This semester (Fall 2010), 8 upper-level Business courses are of-fered online.

Particularly, the eight online courses that Business majors are enjoying this semester are a solid proof of the necessity of online education at LCC. Ration-ally thinking, a distant learning model offers the benefitsofafreescheduleandmoreflexibilityforyour study pace. After all, online courses are about competentself-education,whichLCCencouragesfromourfirstdayshere.

Fact 3: LCC Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Teaching English to Speak-ers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a primarily online program with an intensive face-to-face component.

A fact that speaks loudly in favor of online classes is the successful Master’s program launched at LCC this year. There are 11 M. A. TESOL students, receiving their degree completely online. The pro-

gram has been intention-ally designed as a distant learning model, and is proving successful.online classes. The key point here is to concentrate on advantages rather than shortcomings. We’re all very successful at spend-ing our free time online. Why not successfully study online, too?

Fact 4: Distant Learn-ing Task Force has been initiated at LCC.

Starting October 11, a Task force on Distance LearningwasinitiatedatLCC.Itwillbecomprisedof primarily faculty, one staff member, and a stu-dent.Theultimategoalisareportthat,followingasubstantialresearchwithinLCCanduniversitieswithsuccessfulonlineprograms,willprovidequal-ity online teaching and learning recommendations. Thereport,alsoavailabletostudents,willdevelopaphilosophyforqualitydistancelearningatLCC,whilepreservingtheresidentialcampusmodel.Whatandhowmanycoursesshouldbetaughtonline?Howtomakeonlineeducationproportion-ateforallmajors?Howtopreparestudentsandinstructors for online learning and teaching?

To sum it up, nobody’s perfect. Neither are online classes. The key point here is to concentrate on ad-vantages rather than shortcomings. We’re all very successful at spending our free time online. Why not successfully study online, too?

Marlene Wall: The answer is simply

the number of credits. Students pay

for the credits, but not for the delivery model.

Shakespeare’squotefitsperfectlyintothe title of this article since the man thisarticleiswrittenaboutcreateshistory by teaching history to the LCCstudents.Undoubtedly, weareall lucky to have Wes Goudy teach-ingusasheisdefinitelydevotedtohistorical science and practically perfect in presenting the material to the students.Atfirst, itmightseemobscurehowaman, whooriginallycamefromCanada, but lived a half of his life in Champaign,Illinois, isworkinginLithuaniarightnow.Buteverythingis in the right place. Professor Goudy found out about LCC International Universityfromtheinternet,“InoticedawebpagewithLCC’sdesireforhistorian,soIrespondedforthat.”And ever since fall 2008, for three years already, he teaches kids every Fall semester and then goes back homeinwinter.Andthere, hedoesvariousthings,“Ihadbeenteaching

at a community college and some of the courses that I have taught here have come from my previous teach-ing at a community college, but I am stillworkingtowardadissertation[PhDinTheology,ChurchHistory].”It appears that Professor Goudy re-allylovesteaching,“OnceI’dfinishedthe Master’s Degree I thought that it’s a good idea to try teaching for a while,soItaughtsomeclassesandthen decided that I’d come to LCC after I’ve already taught a bunch of classes.Itwasworththeriskcomingallthewayaroundtheearthtoteachhere.”Besides teaching and communicat-ingwithstudents,ProfessorGoudylovestravelling,“InmyfreetimeIlike to travel. I’ve been to Greece, Italy, especiallyplaceswithhistory–Venice, Florence, and Naples, Rome inItaly;inGreeceIwenttoAthens,Delphi, and Olympia, all of those kinds of historic places. I’ve been to

IsraelandsawJerusalemandsomeof the ancient sights there, and I’ve alsobeenaroundEurope.”Andasforfavourite place in Klaipeda he picked themostrandomandunexpectedplace–Karkludormitory. In addition, Professor Goudy re-allyenjoysmeetingnewpeopleandteaching at the LCC International University, whichseemsdifferent[from American universities] to him just because of the international students and their attitude to educa-tion,“...It’sdifferentenoughthatitstays very intriguing for me to teach here. I think that trying to bridge the distancebetweendifferentculturesisalwaysexciting!”ProfessorWesGoudyisauniqueperson, and hopefully he can add something useful to the students and the students can sure add something beneficialtohim.

There is no God that you can see, you can smell or you can touch or clutch.Any form of life is nothing more than just a random-fortunate coin-cidence and you should see it as a sheer recurring incidence.

I suppose… then there is not much more here to propose.

It gathered leaders from a large variety of churches, service organizations and businesses in Lithuania.Thesummitwasatwodayevent that challenged and inspired theparticipantswithpracticalandtransferable principles for leaders at every level. Steve Metelak, the Director of LeadershipDevelopmentexplainedmehowthedecisionofhostingthesummitatouruniversitywasmade.HewentwiththisideatoholdtheeventatLCCtoKyleUsreyinthelastfall. The dean found the preposition interesting, because Solis Karosas from the city church also had spoken withhimaboutthesamething.Anunusual coincidence that leaded to the fact that LCC had hosted such an important summit. Furthermore, thanks to the support from leaders from various countries like Lithu-ania,Latvia,Estonia,Sweden,andEngland the planning and organ-izingofthiseventwasfacilitated.Inaddition to this, students from LCC volunteeredtohelpwiththeorgan-izing and in spite of all the suspicions they did a very good job.
