STANFORD BREAKS THROUGH IN CT CLASSICBy Tom LaMarra

Outside of a few disappointing efforts, Stanford has

been a very consistent racehorse in both his run-

ning style and ability to hit the board in top company.

One thing had eluded him—a graded stakes

victory—but that changed in his 11th start April 23.

The 4-year-old Malibu Moon colt picked a perfect

time to break through: the $1.25 million Charles Town

Classic (gr. II). Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by

Javier Castellano, Stanford was quick to take the lead

from post 7 in the 10-horse field and never looked

back en route to a two-length win over Page McKen-

ney, who was seeking his fifth consecutive stakes.

"He had a fantastic trip," Pletcher said. "He broke

very well and got the position we hoped for going to

the first turn. He was on cruise control from there."

Owned by Stonestreet Stables, Susan Magnier,

Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Stanford nursed

a half-length lead through the first mile of the three-

turn, 1 1/8-mile event at the West Virginia track. He

was shadowed throughout by Page McKenney in what

amounted to a two-horse race from start to finish.

CATHRYN SOPHIA SWIFT IN WORK AT KEENELAND After a swift five-furlong breeze by Cathryn Sophia the morning of April 23 at Keeneland, trainer John Servis said he is leaning toward running the two-time grade II winner in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) May 6 at Churchill Downs.

PRICEDTOPERFECTION, LIRA IN AQUEDUCT CLASH After a layoff following the first graded stakes score of her career, Pricedtoperfection is back in New York for trainer Chad Brown and will try a strong edition of the $100,000 Memories of Silver Stakes April 24 on the Aqueduct Racetrack turf.

TAA NAMED HONORARY POSTMASTER PREAKNESS WEEK Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations, has been named the honorary postmaster for the 141st Preakness Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico Race Course.

MARYLAND HALL OF FAME CLASS SELECTED Dave's Friend was one of the best sprinters in the nation and Kauai King developed into a two-time classic winner, still holding the distinction of being the only Maryland-bred to win the Kentucky Derby.

Three California shippers—all of which exited the

Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I)—didn't have the best of

trips. Donworth, who finished third, was in tight at

the start and hung wide for most of the race; Imper-

ative, the 2014 Charles Town Classic winner and sec-

ond last year, rallied from ninth; and Hard Aces, who

also raced from behind, was steadied a few times.

Castellano—who also won the Robert Hilton Me-

morial Stakes for 3-year-olds with Dig Deep, a Candy

Ride colt owned by Colts Neck Stables and trained by

Alan Goldberg—previously rode Stanford four other

times, with a win and three seconds.

"I really like the way he did it," Castellano said.

"He broke sharply and there wasn't much speed in

the race. He usually just falls into position, and I'm

satisfied with how he did it today."

In his previous start, Stanford finished a head be-

hind Blofeld in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II).

He began his season with a second-place effort in the

Fred W. Hooper Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.

Pletcher said connections haven't decided on the

colt's next start, but the June 11 Metropolitan Handi-

cap (gr. I), a one-turn-mile event with a $1.25 million

purse, is under consideration.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm from the

Distorted Humor mare Rosy Humor, Stanford was

a $550,000 purchase at the 2014 Barretts March

selected 2-year-olds in training sale.

Pennsylvania-bred runners had a big day at

Charles Town. Page McKenney, by Eavesdropper,

earned $234,000 for his second in the Classic, while

Harry Nye's 5-year-old Raging Smoke (More Smoke)

won the secondary feature, the Sugar Maple Stakes

for fillies and mares. BH

CLEVER CLAIM DA BIG HOSS A BIG REWARDBy Claire Novak

A clever $50,000 claim last year by trainer Mike

Maker and Skychai Racing, 5-year-old Da Big Hoss

continued to reward his new connections April 23,

when he won his first grade II event.

The Lemon Drop Kid runner shot through on the

rail under jockey Florent Geroux and held off rallying

Kaigun by half a length to claim the $250,000 Elkhorn

Stakes (gr. IIT) at Keeneland.

He added the 1 1/2-mile turf race to a resume that

includes wins in the John B. Connally Turf (gr. IIIT) and

Kentucky Turf Cup (gr. IIIT).

"He's a very neat horse," Geroux said. "When

there's an opening he can shoot through very quickly,

and that made the difference today. When I was able

to see the opening at the top of the stretch, my horse

kicked through and kept on going."

Bred in Kentucky by Gary and Mary West out of

the Touch Gold mare Lady Struck Gold, Da Big Hoss

made 10 starts for the Wests and trainer Wayne

Catalano before moving to Maker. Seven of his eight

subsequent races have been in stakes. BH

ANOTHER STEP TOWARD DERBY FOR NYQUISTBy Frank Angst

Trainer Doug O'Neill wasn't asking for much of

Nyquist in an April 23 breeze at Keeneland. The

Kentucky Derby (gr. I) favorite delivered.

Working in company with grade I winner Ralis,

Reddam Racing's Nyquist completed five furlongs in

1:01 4/5 Saturday morning on the fast main track. The

champion son of Uncle Mo registered splits of :12, :23

4/5, and :35 4/5 under regular exercise rider Jonny

Garcia. Nyquist did very little in terms of a run out.

The five-furlong time, 19th fastest of 34 at the

distance, was exactly what O'Neill wanted from what

he called a maintenance work.

"He's fit and ready, so we're just strictly working

for maintenance," O'Neill said. "We told Jonny '1:01

and change,' and the clockers had him at 1:01 4/5. So

that's pretty good."

O'Neill plans a similar five-furlong breeze April 30

at Keeneland before shipping Nyquist to Churchill

Downs May 1.

Preparing for the Derby at Keeneland has worked

well, in O'Neill's estimation.

"He looks so well; he's really thriving and loving

Kentucky," O'Neill said. BH

SOLID WORKS FOR EXAGGERATOR, DANZING CANDYBy Jeremy Balan

After hopping off Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner

Exaggerator following the Curlin colt's final South-

ern California workout before the Kentucky Derby

(gr. I), Kent Desormeaux was eager to get to the first

Saturday in May.

For the three-time Derby winner and Hall of Fam-

er, this year's edition provides a unique experience.

Riding a winner for his brother, trainer Keith Deso-

rmeaux, in the Run for the Roses would be unrivaled.

"Nothing would be better. Not in the racing in-

dustry, at least," Kent Desormeaux said, following

Exaggerator's five-furlong move in 1:00 at Santa Anita

Park. "I'm definitely excited and anxious to find out

our destiny. It seems like the Derby is a year from

now. I'm just so excited for Keith."

Keith Desormeaux, in preparation for his first Der-

by run, was happy with Exaggerator's workout and

said the colt will ship to Churchill Downs overnight

April 26-27 to get one workout over the surface.

"I think he's at a good stage," the trainer said. "He

rebounded from the Santa Anita Derby in fine fash-

ion. This is my first Derby, but I couldn't be happier.

He's progressing. Progressing is the key word. He's

progressing, not regressing."

About 100 miles south, one of Exaggerator's chief

Southern California rivals on the Triple Crown trail,

Danzing Candy, ran the same distance in the same

time at San Luis Rey Training Center in San Diego

County.

Unlike his rival, Danzing Candy will stay home for

his final Derby workout, scheduled for April 30 at San

Luis Rey. Trainer Cliff Sise decided to move the San

Felipe (gr. II) winner to San Luis Rey to train because

he feels the sandier surface more resembles Church-

ill Downs.

Sise was surprised how quickly the Twirling Candy

colt breezed Saturday, following his fourth-place fin-

ish in the Santa Anita Derby, in which he set blazing

fractions on the front end and tired on a sloppy track.

"Unbelievable," Sise said. "He was supposed to

go 1:01 and went in 1:00 easy. He went almost :13

for the first eighth and the last half-mile was in :47. I

think he likes it down here.

"I can't believe how good he worked. He's been

happier down here than at Santa Anita. Maybe he likes

the fresh air. I didn't really know how he'd work today,

but he did it really comfortable. Next week we'll look

for almost the same—maybe a little slower." BH

BRODY'S CAUSE THRIVES AT CHURCHILL DOWNSBy Jennie Rees

Trainer Dale Romans says he's delighted with the

progress Blue Grass (gr. I) winner Brody's Cause is

making toward the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) following an

April 23 workout.

Working during the first Churchill Downs special

training session for Derby and Oaks prospects, Brody's

Cause (Giant's Causeway) ran five furlongs in 1:01 4/5.

"It's a cliche to say it went just like we wanted, but

it went just like we wanted," Romans said. "These

horses are under such a microscope; you can't hide

them. If they're going good, they're going good. If

they're not, they're not. It was the time we wanted

coming right off the race. He went around there easy

and looked comfortable doing it."

Brody's Cause will have one more workout before

the Derby, most likely April 30.

Stablemate Cherry Wine, third in the Blue Grass,

was scheduled to work but just galloped—a con-

cession to Romans' suspicion the colt, 25th on the

Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, won't get a

Derby start.

"It looks more and more

like we're going to be head-

ing to the Preakness," he

said.

GMB Racing's Tom's

Ready (More Than Ready),

second in the Louisiana

Derby (gr. II), worked five

furlongs in 1:01 with 3-year-

old maiden Forever d'Oro,

whose half sisters are grade

I winners Unbridled Forever

and Forever Unbridled.

"Nice and solid, typical

work for him," trainer Dallas

Stewart said of Tom's Ready,

one of the first horses he

purchased for Tom Benson,

owner of the New Orleans

Saints and Pelicans and

whose wife, Gayle, is the

'G' in GMB Racing. "He laid

back off a horse, came with

a good finish. It was a good

fight. That's a nice colt he worked with.

"This work had to be a good one. We wanted to

get him blowing and get him halfway tired."

New Mark Casse trainee Fellowship is relishing his

Churchill Downs surroundings as he prepares for a

possible Derby start.

Owner Jacks or Better Farm transferred Fellowship

to the Casse barn following his third-place finish to

Nyquist in the Florida Derby (gr. I).

He previously finished third to Mohaymen in the

Holy Bull and the Fountain of Youth (both gr. II) when

trained by Stanley Gold.

Fellowship (Awesome of Course) needs a horse

above him on the Derby leaderboard to withdraw

to get a chance to Run for the Roses. He went five

furlongs in 1:00 4/5.

"He worked like good horses work. We're certain-

ly more excited with the possibility of him running

(in the Derby) now, knowing how he worked," said

Norman Casse, who runs the Churchill Downs divi-

sion for his father's stable. "It just seems like he really

likes the racetrack. He skips over it. He's just a really

happy horse right now." BH

A TRULY INTERNATIONAL FILLYBy Tom Hall

Perhaps nothing better exemplifies the internation-

al extent of Thoroughbred horse racing than an

April 22 contest for maiden 3-year-old fillies at Sand-

own in England.

In her 2016 debut, Southern Stars, conditioned by

English trainer John Gosden and ridden by Italian jockey

Frankie Dettori, defeated 10 other fillies over 1 1/4 miles.

Southern Stars is a homebred for Teruya Yoshi-

da, owner of Shadai Farm, located on the island of

Hokkaido in Japan. The bay filly is by Smart Strike,

twice leading U.S. sire and a resident of Lane’s End in

Kentucky until his untimely death in 2015.

Her dam is the French-bred Stacelita, who won

the 2009 Prix de Diane (Fr-I, French Oaks) before be-

ing purchased by U.S.-based owner Martin Schwartz.

He brought her to the States, where she won the

Beverly D. at Arlington and the Flower Bowl at Bel-

mont (both gr. IT) on the way to an Eclipse Award as

champion turf female of 2011. Her sire, the Ger-

man-bred Monsun, was a four-time leading sire and

broodmare sire in his homeland.

Yoshida purchased Stacelita privately in 2012,

when she was in foal to Smart Strike, and shipped

her to England, where she foaled Southern Stars.

Bred to Frankel in 2013, she delivered a filly in Japan

the following year. BH

MILESTONE VICTORY FOR TRAINERBy Alastair Bull

Finest City earned a first graded stakes win for

herself and for 27-year-old trainer Ian Kruljac when

she dashed past favorite Fantastic Style to take the

Great Lady M. Stakes (gr. II) at Los Alamitos.

“I thought we could win today, because she is all

heart and I really didn’t think we had seen her best

yet,” Kruljac said. “I want to thank the owners (Seltzer

Thoroughbreds), my father (trainer Eric Kruljac) and

everyone at the barn for believing in me.’’

The City Zip filly relaxed off the speed for jockey

Kent Desormeaux and came with the last run to beat

Fantastic Style, who had battled Lost Bus all the way

down the stretch.

Finest City started at 8-1 after finishing fourth to

Fantastic Style in the Las Flores (gr. III) March 20, but

Desormeaux was confident with the fast pace set.

Even though she has a lot of speed, she was able

to relax perfectly and it worked out great the way

they were going up front,” Desormeaux said.

Bred in Pennsylvania by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing,

Finest City was an $85,000 Keeneland September year-

ling purchase for Seltzer Thoroughbreds in 2013. BH

STALLIONS& BLOODSTOCK COMMENTARYwith Robert L. Losey, [email protected]

MAKING A STALLION

Buyers of potential racehorses like a stallion

that produces a high percentage of stakes

winners. But they love a stallion that ranks high

on leading sires lists. Big books tend to move a

stallion up the leading sires list and create mar-

ket acceptance. There are other considerations,

but there is little question in this writer’s mind

that every 10% increment in the number of foals

a stallion produces in his first crop increases his

chances of eventual

market success by

significantly more

than 10%.

Farms use a

variety of strategies

to generate large

foal crops, with new

strategies emerg-

ing in recent years.

Variations of Spend-

thrift’s “Share the

Upside” approach

are now widely

used for moderately

priced stallions. Sim-

ilarly, their “Breed

Secure” program has

been copied by other farms.

Some farms, most notably Adena Springs,

have bought maiden mares that have won sig-

nificant purse money, bred them to their stal-

lions, and resold them, often carrying first foals.

The more traditional approach of syndicating

stallions, either fully or partially, is used less fre-

quently these days, and syndications are often

accompanied by an announcement that the

farm will be supporting a new stallion by breed-

ing a large number of their own mares.

Many farms use a combination of these ap-

proaches as well as time-honored wheeling and

dealing (“Breed Secure” is one variation), using

incentives and contract variations to generate

large numbers of foals.

There are pros and cons to each of these

approaches to making a stallion. Advantages to

a farm using its own mares include quality con-

trol and greater ability to affect racing prospect

prices in early years. Disadvantages include the

substantial costs and the likelihood that the

mares are being bred to what will turn out to

be unsuccessful stallions; 85% or more of new

stallions turn out to be non-commercial.

Share the Upside

and the Adena Spring

approaches have the

advantages that they

carve out a differ-

ent niche for using

stallion seasons, and

also transfer the risk

of breeding to an

unsuccessful stallion

to other breeders.

The Adena Springs

approach also takes

advantage of the pre-

mium paid for mares

carrying first foals.

Both approaches

give up some control

over pricing, and Share The Upside cedes some

control over quality.

My March 27 column on average earnings

index/comparative index relationships reports

research that breeding to higher CI mares,

which are presumably higher quality, generates

only a 16% increase in AEI for each one-point

move up the CI scale. For farms considering

breeding their own high-quality mares to new

stallions, not only do they risk weakening the

mares’ produce records, but there is a question

whether they may get much return from their

investments in mares when their runners hit the

track. BH
