THE

PASTOR’S

PAGE

In last week’s pastor’scolumn I reported on aquestionnaire given a few yearsago at St. Rose’s parish inMassapequa to the parents of

children preparing for first holy Communion.Although the questionnaire was not a professionalinstrument, the results confirmed my pastoralexperience over 40 years. There has been a gradualdiminishment in churchgoing since my ordination in1973. It seems that many social and cultural changesin the last half-century have damaged the ability ofCatholic families to hand on the faith from onegeneration to the next.

In the metropolitan areas of the Northeast andMidwest, church attendance weekly by Catholics isless than 20% of registered parishioners. The St.Rose questionnaire supports this. Parents are notparticipating in the Eucharist regularly because theyhave other priorities: Sunday activities with theirchildren other than mass; busy workweeks thatexhaust them on Sunday; liturgies that they findboring; priests who cannot be understood well; aspouse of a different religious belief; divorce andremarriage outside the church; and more.

A new book “For Families and Faith: HowReligion Is Passed down across Generations” by asociologist from the University of SouthernCalifornia, Vern L. Bergston, delves into the roleparents are playing or not playing in the handing onof faith and religious belief to their children. The 35year study of more than 3500 respondents, wants toknow among other things, why some parents do wellin passing on their faith while others do not.Bergston’s book questions families in SouthernCalifornia. The families religious belief were mainlineProtestant, evangelical Protestant, Catholic, Jewish,Mormon, and None. His data covers threegenerations: parents, grandparents and grandchildrenfrom 1970 to 2005.

HANDING ON THE FAITH

Fundamentally, the research shows thatchildren follow their parents lead in general.“If the parents are not themselves involved inreligious activities, if their actions are notconsistent with what they preach, children arerarely motivated to follow in their parents’religious footsteps.”

In addition, when parents are close to theirchildren with strong bonds, the transmissionrate is higher. The father of the familyparticipating in religious services with hisspouse, has a significant impact on thechildren’s faith development and persistence inthe faith. “The family that prays together, stays together.”

Some practical implications from the study:1. Churches need to focus on the family as aunit. Strengthening connections acrossgenerations, or intergenerational faithformation is effective. “If churches want toretain the next generation, they must notignore families and strengthening connectionsacross generations in their programming.”

2. Don’t be discouraged by today’s lower rateof church affiliation and participation.Historically, religious intensity has increasedand decreased especially among young people. It is likely that the low percentage ofchurchgoing today is temporary.

3. Young people may not be interested inreligion, but it is likely that change will come asthey grow to maturity.

4. Because young people are critical ofinstitutional religion, institutional religion willneed to innovate and reform to deal with thatcrisis. Renewal of religions is likely.

Peace, Father Bruce

Bulletin Reflection:In today’s reading, Joshua challenges the people to decide whomthey will serve. Recalling God’s faithfulness to them and to theirancestors, the people declare, “We also will serve the Lord, for Heis our God.” We, too, must be mindful of God’s gifts to us andrenew our commitment to serve Him with grateful hearts.

Living Stewardship:We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish whochoose God and service to our neighbor over every other responsi-bility, want or ambition as an act of good stewardship.

Our Teens are becoming Young Adults—startingcollege with a lifetime of opportunities in front ofthem. There will be many choices that they willmake during the next 4 years, let’s help them tostay connected to their faith while they are makingthose choices!

Let’s help our young people keep a faithconnection while they are in college. Many will beaway from home and out on their own, what betterway to help them stay grounded and give them asafe place to meet new friends than through theirUniversity’s Newman Center.  Newman Centers are Catholic ministry centers atnon-Catholic universities throughout the country. These Centers provide pastoral services andministries to their Catholic student population.Through the Newman Connection, students areconnected to their Campus Minister and invited tojoin Catholic Campus Ministry—this becomes theirfaith community away from home! It’s simple to make that connection—the onlyinformation that is required is the student’s firstand last name and the name of the college oruniversity they will be attending in September.

Then send this information to Marianne Sheridan,Director for Youth Ministry [email protected]. This information will beforwarded to the proper Newman Center and yourteen will be welcomed in the fall when they arriveat their school.

Let’s keep our Young Church connected andcommitted to their faith!

Making a will isn’t expensive! But not having one may cost your family a

great deal. Our call as good stewards is to use wisely the gifts

God has entrusted to us. Making a will or revising the

one you have if you haven’t done so in the last five

years – is good Stewardship.

Please consider a gift to our Parish as well.
