U I have never studied thehistory of music, perhaps youhave. But I do know that musicalinstruments of various kinds, both wind, percussion and

stringed, and related to the modern flute, lyre, harpand drums have been part of the lives of humanbeings for many thousands of years. The human voiceis the highest expression of our race. Musicalinstruments accompany our song.

When human beings come into contact with God,their spoken words are not enough. “Awake, my soul!Awake, oh harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! I willgive thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I willsing praises to you among the nations. For yoursteadfast love reaches up to the heavens, yourfaithfulness to the clouds.” (Psalm 57)

The verb “to sing” is one of the most commonlyused words in the Bible occurring 309 times in the OldTestament and 36 in the New. When God deliversIsrael from their slavery in Egypt across the Red Seainto the promised land, the people of God sing thepraises of the Lord: “Then Moses and the Israelitessang this song to the Lord: ‘I will sing to the Lord, forhe has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he hasthrown into the sea.’” (Exodus 15:1) Each year, we whohave been baptized sing this song at the Easter vigil;because we have been taken out of the water ofenslavement to sin and death by God’s mighty power.

The sacred songbook of Israel is the book ofPsalms, 150 of them. They were sung by Israel incommunity prayer. They express the full range ofhuman emotions. As Christians, we sing these songs inthe Liturgy of the Hours (Breviary). It is the HolySpirit that teaches us to sing; and to give voice withour whole being to the God of love. St. Augustine toldus: “Singing is what lovers do.” And mysteriously andwonderfully, the God of the universe is enchanted withyou and me. God sings over us. How can we not sing;because we want to return that love to God!

In the new Passover meal, the Last Supper offeredby the Lord Jesus, the event of the Exodus wassolemnly commemorated in the sharing of a sacrificedlamb, unleavened bread, and a cup of wine

MUSIC IN CATHOLIC WORSHIP

remembering the deliverance from bondage inEgypt. But Jesus gives that Passover meal aninfinitely new depth of meaning. The newPassover meal, the foundational story ofChristianity, calls to mind and heart the salvationoffered us in the death and resurrection of theMessiah. It is Christ the sacrificed lamb thatconquers.

As when Jews celebrate the Passover today,Jesus and his disciples sang the praises of Godthroughout the Seder liturgy. “Drink from it, allof you; for this is my blood of the covenant, whichis poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit ofthe vine until that day when I drink it new withyou in my Father’s kingdom.” At the conclusion,Scripture tells us that ‘When they had sung thehymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.’”Even as his brutal death comes near, Jesus andhis followers are singing the praises of God. TheResurrection of Christ is not yet seen, but stillthey are singing. That Resurrection will be ourtrue Exodus as Christians - our journey out of sinand death’s bonds to glory unending.

It is St. Paul who helps us understand whatthe early Christian celebrations of the Eucharistwere like. “When you come together, each one hasa hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or aninterpretation. Let all things be done foredification.”(1 Corinthians 14)

“Prayer is a gift of the Holy Spirit, both prayerin general and the particular kind of prayer whichis the gift of singing and playing before God. TheHoly Spirit is love. He enkindles love in us, andthus moves us to sing.” (The Spirit of the Liturgy,Pope Benedict XVI)

Catholics do sing! Lift up your voice in praise ofthe living God!

Peace, Father Bruce

Living Stewardship:We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who offerwelcome and assistance to our new parishioners, whetherthrough our Hospitality Ministry or right from the pews!

St. Kilian Catholic Church

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Passing on the faith is a responsibility that is shared by every member of the Body of Christ. In the Acts of theApostles St. Luke names catechesis, teaching the faith within the faith community and passing it on to form thenext generation as one of the five marks of a vibrant Church that lives in Christ Jesus.

While our concern for our brothers and sisters and especially our young people is a mark of our being acommunity of faith, our witness excludes no one and our love spills over into the wider community. AsCatholics we embrace everyone as brother or sister because we all are created in the image and likeness of God.

Because that truth is so fundamental, this year’s Catechetical Sunday has as its theme: SAFEGUARDING THEDIGNITY OF EVERY HUMAN PERSON. It is to every human person created in God’s image that God giveshuman rights. They apply to everyone for that reason and that reason alone. Our Catholic social teachingupholds this. Our lives as Catholics defend this. Our society today needs to hear this.

Upholding and teaching this includes grasping the crucial difference between the truth that God gives us ourrights and the falsehood that the state or the government gives us our rights. Political institutions have theobligation to recognize, protect and promote our human rights, not regulate them or interfere with them as ishappening today in all parts of the world including our own country.

Human rights and civil rights are not the same. You cannot deny human rights. You can develop civil rightsthrough positive laws. But if so called “civil rights” contradict human rights, they too are wrong and need to becorrected.

In this important area of cathechetics as in so many other aspects of faith formation and moral guidance, thisChurch and all our parishes are doing so much to educate your children. I urge all parents to attend themeetings set up for you to fulfill your responsibility as the first educators of your children. Our catecheticalleaders are constantly updating their expertise. The faith formation programs are getting better and better everyyear, being renewed to help your children understand and live their faith in a very complex world and a verysecular society.

These and so many other aspects of our Catholic social teaching can be found on the website of the Diocese andthe other diocesan websites including the Office of Faith Formation. Please take advantage of these sources ofinformation. And please be one with the whole Church in safeguarding the dignity of every human person!

Yours devotedly in Christ,

Bishop of Rockville Centre

¡No habían puestoatención!
