U Last fall 2015, Our HolyFather, Pope Francis, made anhistoric visit to our nation. Hewas the first Pope in history toaddress a joint session of theUnited States Congress. Hespoke with courage and
wisdom, praising our nation for the freedoms that weenjoy and stating that he is pleased with America as “aland of dreams”. Dreams which lead to action, toparticipation, to commitment. Dreams which awakenwhat is deepest and truest in the life of a people. “In recent centuries, millions of people came to thisland to pursue their dream of building a future infreedom. We, the people of this continent (Pope Francisis from Argentina), are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners. I say this toyou as the son of immigrants, knowing that so many ofyou are also descended from immigrants.” The Holy Father went on to call for the reform ofimmigration policy in our nation. He mentioned that theentire world is facing a refugee crisis, and that thatcrisis is greater than anything we have seen since theSecond World War. “This presents us with greatchallenges and many hard decisions. On this continent, too, thousands of persons are led to travel north insearch of a better life for themselves and for their lovedones, in search of greater opportunities. Is this not whatwe want for our own children? We must not be takenaback by their numbers, but rather view them aspersons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation. Torespond in a way which is always humane, just andfraternal. We need to avoid a common temptationnowadays: to discard whatever proves troublesome.Let us remember the Golden Rule: “Do unto others asyou would have them do unto you.” (Matthew 7:12) The words of Pope Francis were strong and bold, challenging the leaders of our nation to respondcompassionately to those who are escaping poverty, deprivation and persecution. They echoed thesentiments of Catholic social teaching by popes andbishops over the past century and a half. That socialteaching is grounded in the Scriptures, the word ofGod, and we must heed its call.
A Nation of Immigrants
I was reminded in Pope Francis sentiments,of his predecessor St. John Paul II: “Our worldis entering the new millennium burdened by thecontradictions of an economic, cultural andtechnological progress which offers immensepossibilities to a fortunate few, while leavingmillions of others not only on the margins ofprogress but in living conditions far below theminimum demanded by human dignity.” (St. JohnPaul II, in his apostolic letter at the close of thegreat Jubilee of the year 2000, Novo MillenioIneunte) I was reminded also of our own UnitedStates bishops who have also called for thereform of immigration policy. www.usccb.org Other than the Native American Indian, weare a nation of immigrants. Our ancestors cameto this land of promise for many reasons. Somesought financial security for themselves andtheir children. Others had no option. They werefleeing persecution, religious or political. Theywere malnourished and starving. They had noopportunities for advancement. They may haveheard not only of “streets paved with gold”, butof the precious freedoms that our Constitutionpromotes and defends, “life, liberty, and thepursuit of happiness” - and especially for manyof them, freedom of religion and the separationof church and state. We must never forget our origins. Ourforebears risked their lives in a perilous journeythrough unknown waters, and then they helpedcreate new beginnings in a country morecomplex and challenging than they may haveimagined. The gospel does not permit us todayto close ranks and make even more forbiddingthe journey of immigrants to our nation. Quitethe opposite is true. Does not Christ warn us in the parable of thelast judgment, that we are to welcome thestranger, and in doing so welcome Him. And thatthe failure to do so risks our salvation?
Peace, Father Bruce

“The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the seventy-two in today’sGospel, “but the workers are few.” The situation is the sametoday. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called intothe field? Am I one who could provide food, shelter orwages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord?

Not only is July 4th thecelebration of AmericanIndependence; it is mostimportant for us the
anniversary of the dedication of St. Kilian’sChurch. It is the anniversary of the doublededication of our church, first time in 1898 andsecond in 1998. The anniversary of thededication of a church is ranked as aSolemnity, the highest rank of Church feasts.Solemnities replace all other feast days exceptfor Holy Week and Christmas. The Churchwants us to celebrate our identity as acommunity of faith.
Although the church is a building; it isnonetheless a symbol of the Body of Christ, the living temple of the Lord here in ourcommunity. The cross on the top of our steepletowers over the town as a powerful symbol ofChrist’s presence through us. Just so, ourfaith should be a towering example to peoplearound us of the presence and influence ofChrist in our lives.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIPRECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
1731: Freedom is the power, rooted in reason andwill, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and soto perform deliberate actions on one’s own re-sponsibility. By free will one shapes one’s ownlife. Human freedom is a force for growth andmaturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfec-tion when directed toward God, our beatitude.
1738: Freedom is exercised in relationshipsbetween human beings. Every human person, created in the image of God, has the natural rightto be recognized as a free and responsible being. All owe to each other this duty of respect. Theright to the exercise of freedom, especially inmoral and religious matters, is an inalienablerequirement of the dignity of the human person. This right must be recognized and protected bycivil authority within the limits of the commongood and public order (Catechism of the CatholicChurch).
For those of us who are Americans, we must nevertake for granted the freedom we enjoy to worshipand to believe as we desire. God has given eachhuman being the free will to shape one’s life. There are many places in the world that seek tolimit or destroy that free will. At times, even ourown country risks curtailing those freedomsbecause of political agenda or blindness to thetruth.
Good stewardship demands we not only givethanks for that freedom, but we use it to grow infaith and maturity. How can we not fully live outour faith in freedom when there are others in thisworld that have no way of expressing their be-liefs? Once we grow in our faith and becomemature disciples, we need to recognize the need tofight for all of our human brothers and sisters thatthey may enjoy the same freedom that we do. Wemust not count the cost in this struggle, for the costinvolved with doing nothing may be even greater.

¡Señor,envía operarios a tu mies! Así sea.
