CHRIST CATHEDRAL

How did our future “Christ Cathedral” get its name?

The future name for our new Cathedral emerged out of a wonderful process that began with Bishop Tod Brown asking the people of the Diocese to submit to him what name would be appropriate for the new Cathedral. Over 3000 responses were received. The decision was announced at the conclusion of the ordination to the priesthood ceremony this past June. Both the simplicity and clarity of this title conveys the fact that Christ is indeed the “cornerstone” of the Church. Additionally, in light of the fact that this will be an historic transformation of a Protestant Church into a Catholic Cathedral, there is an ecumenical dimension to this title. While we sadly acknowledge the divisions in the Christian Church, the Second Vatican Council focused on the commonality of baptismal dignity that all Christians share, since all Christians are made new in Christ through the life giving waters of this Sacrament. While Christ Cathedral will indeed be the mother Church of our Diocese, its doors will be open in hospitality to all who come to experience the presence of a God who calls all to share in His life and love.

How are we going to pay for our new Cathedral and campus?

While the diocese purchased the Garden Grove Crystal Cathedral campus for $ 57,000,000 a large percentage of this money was borrowed in order to acquire the campus. Repayment as well as costs associated with preparing the site as well as renovating the Cathedral will come from various sources. The diocese intends to sell the present central administrative offices, Marywood, that is located in Orange. Proceeds from the sale of this property and buildings will help to defray the costs associated with the move to the new campus. However, the major portion of the funds will come from a Diocesan Capital Campaign that will commence in January 2013. This will be the first time that our diocese embarks on a diocesan wide capital campaign. This will be different from the yearly Pastoral Services Appeal Campaign. The goal of the upcoming Diocesan Capital Campaign will be between $ 80,000,000 to $ 100,000,000. While a certain portion of these monies will be earmarked for our new Cathedral complex, monies from the campaign will also be used to support Catholic Schools, Retired Priests as well as Catholic Charities here in the Diocese. How will the Campaign work? Aside from donations that lead donors might give to the campaign, each parish will be asked to raise one year of ordinary income that can be pledged over a four to five year period of time. For St. Kilian parish that amount will be $ 1, 316,626.00. For every dollar raised in this campaign at the parish level, 25% will return to the parish for its own needs. Any monies received over and beyond our goal, 50% will be returned to the parish for its own needs! Working with our Parish Finance Council as well as with Guidance in Giving the professional development firm that the Diocesan has retained to assist in this important campaign, a parish committee will assist in orchestrating this historic campaign here in the parish beginning in January of 2013. There will be no Pastoral Services Appeal Campaign in 2013. Monies earmarked for the 2013 PSA will be rolled into the Capital Campaign goal.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 8

BIBLE STUDY FOR PEOPLE ON THE GO

January 19th & 20th, 2013 - Year C 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

FOCUS: The Spirit of God gives us

all the gifts we need

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 62:1-5,

Psalm 96:1-3, 7-10, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11,

John 2:1-11

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What gifts has the Spirit given to me that I can use to nurture the Body of Christ, the Church?

REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S READINGS Today’s readings speak of the revelation of glory, inviting all into celebration. In our first reading from Isaiah he announces the coming glory of God’s vindicated people when they return to rebuild their shattered homeland. The prophet also describes the Lord’s relationship to the people as a marriage. Our psalm is a hymn of praise to the kingship of Yahweh, as Creator, and calling upon the whole earth to sing to the Lord. In our second reading from Corinthians there is discussion about spiritual gifts. Paul emphases that these gifts are grace to all, should be used for the betterment of the whole community; and to build up the Body of Christ, the Church. In our gospel we hear the account of the wedding feast at Cana. The kingdom of God was often described as a wedding feast full of many blessings. Mary announces to Jesus there is no more wine. Jesus reminds his mother that his mission is not to fulfill human desires but God’s will. Mary tells servants to do what ever Jesus tells then to do. The transformation of water into wine symbolizes Jesus’ transformation of the old order of ritual purification and of the Torah (which water symbolized) into a new order of purification, this being through the cross (the ultimate sacrifice) and through a new teaching.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:

1. Do I truly believe that God delights in me?

2. If I were to sing a new song unto the Lord, what would it be?

3. If Paul were writing today, what would he say about division in the Body of Christ (the Church)?

CATHOLICISM A Journey to the Heart of the Faith

You are invited to join us on Monday nights to come together for fellowship and to learn more about the Catholic Faith.

This DVD series was four years in the making, and is the long-awaited evangelical work of Fr. Robert Barron, professor of theology at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. In addition to rock solid scholarship and theology, the series is filled with beautiful cinematography that illustrates the theological points.

Fr. Barron reminds us that ours is a Church of science, art and imagery. Fr. Barron tells the message of Jesus and gives us a compelling modern example of the Gospels in practice. Fr. Barron is a true scholar and is a powerful advocate for Christianity and Catholicism.
