“The word of the Lordcame to me: ‘Before Iformed you in the wombI knew you….’(Jeremiah 1. 5)

It was to tell us about God, that Jesuscame into the world. His parables, notablyabout the great joy, and even ecstasy thatGod has over the lost who return to theembrace of God (the prodigal son and hisloving father, the lost sheep who is soughtout by the shepherd and returned to the fold)They tell us in no uncertain terms what Godis like; and how much God desires each andevery one of us from all eternity, to be withhim.

“We are God’s children now, what we shallbecome has not been revealed to us, but weknow that when it is revealed we shall see Godas he is.” This is an enormous mystery. Weare each the beloved daughters and sons ofGod. There is no rhyme or reason to this. Itsimply is the truth.

In fact, even before we were conceived inour mother’s wombs, we were the beloved ofGod. This is our identity. “I have loved youwith an everlasting love.” God tells us this inhis words in Scripture. When he says ‘you’,God is speaking of all humanity from thebeginning of human history. It is a collective“you”. It is an all inclusive word, with noexceptions. God wants us all to be with himin heaven.

God has made us for himself, in hisdivine image. That gift of God’s perfect lovefor us will never go away. It cannot beextinguished by our moral failures; no matterhow evil they might be. In the season ofLent, we sing: “Turn to me, oh turn to me andbe saved, says the Lord, for I am God, there isno other.”

The Advent Journey to Glory

The church has made the season of Advent both apreparation for the birth of the Savior, and anopportunity for us to prepare for his return to us inglory. How do we prepare? This is a great challenge forus; to quiet down. Most of us live frantic lives. We arebusy about so many things, yet as Jesus tells Martha, only one thing is required of us, union with Him. Thisunion begins now through prayerful awareness of God’spresence within us and around us, in the people placesand events of our lives.

Most of the time we are blind to the coming of Jesustoday, in us and around us. God does not want us to beafraid or distant or defensive. God wants us to comeclose. He is already within us like our breathing; likeour heartbeat that goes on keeping life within us. Howcan we rest in God now, as children do in their mother’sarms? This is the essence of prayer. In the quiet of ourhearts and imaginations, gazing on the Lord, andallowing God to look upon us with immense love andmercy. Prayer is this attentive listening. Quieting down, and entering into the heart of God. Like children intheir mother’s arms. At its core, Jesus tells us, prayer isnot about chatter: “In praying, do not babble like thepagans, who think they will be heard because of theirmany words. Do not be like them. Your Father knowswhat you need before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:7-8)

“Your death and mine is our final passage, our exodus tothe full realization of our identity as God’s belovedchildren, and to full communion with the God of love.Jesus walked the path ahead of us, and invites us tochoose the same path during our lifetime. He calls to us,“Follow Me.” He assures us. “Do not be afraid.” This isour faith. (Advent Meditations, by Rev. Henri Nouwen)

And so we pray: oh God, help us not only to know youbetter, but to love you; and to desire a prayerfulattitude, recognizing your loving presence in ourselves,in the people we encounter, and in the world that youhave created in such majesty. Come, Lord Jesus! Come!

Peace, Father Bruce

John the Baptist is truly an intriguing figure of history. He was a cousin of Jesus and literally prepared all thosewho would listen for this new way of life ushered in bya Messiah. Besides the key role he plays in the Gospelstory, his depiction in Scripture, and then in literature, movies, and other media, gives us an image of a prettyunique person. How about locusts and wild honey fordinner? Can you imagine camel’s hair as a staple in yourwardrobe? He lived differently, and he stood out amongthe status quo. Of course, his look and cuisine didn’tstand out nearly as much as his message.

How do you stand out? What separates you from thecrowd? God has created each of us completely uniqueand with a combination of gifts like no one else. Howcan you uncover and understand your unique gifts? First, reflect on what makes you happiest in life. We arehappiest when we are using the talents God gave us.Next, think about what comes naturally to you, whether itis a skill, task, or emotion. Recurring patterns in ourbehavior and experiences provide clues to ourgiftedness. Finally, what do other people see in you? Thecommunities we live in, whether it is our family, parish, school, or workplace are filled with people who canprovide clues to us by their observations. After thesesteps, can you say what makes you special? Now, let’sstart to grow that, lean on it, and stand out in a way thatbrings glory to God.

GIFT STARS ARE UP FOR CHRISTMAS!We chose the symbol of the Star as a reminder of Jesus as the Light of the World. Here is how it works:v Each family is asked to take one or more Gift Tags from the wall. Please do not remove the star as it will be a

happy reminder that Jesus, the Light of the World, is coming.v Purchase the gift indicated on the gift tag.v Wrap the gift and attach the gift tag so we know for whom the item is intended.v Return the gift to our new Outreach building when you come to Mass the weekend of December 10th and

11th. If your gift is not returned on either of those dates, that family will NOT receive a gift since we aredistributing them soon after the collection takes place.

Time, Talent & Treasure Witness Talkreprinted with permission

Good morning (evening). My name is KathyCamerlengo. My husband, Tony, and I have beenparishioners of St. Kilians for 33 years. We havethree sons who were baptized, received their FirstCommunion and Confirmation in this beautiful

church. We all know of the need for Stewardship talks here in the

parish, yet I’m sure not one person ever calls the rectory to offer todo one. We all wait for the letter or the phone call, and then try toget out of it somehow, relaying one excuse after another. I am nodifferent. I would listen to the person at the lectionary, or readtheir story in the bulletin, and think, “That’s nice. He or she is a realmissionary of God.” Obviously, I did receive “the letter”, and decidedthat I could actually be one who others could listen to or read about.

As a parishioner, but more importantly, as a practicingCatholic, we all have a story to tell. Mine is one of volunteering. Itbegan when my children were in school. I started volunteering atthe elementary school PTA, following through until the youngestfinished high school. I also was involved in Cub Scouts and thenBoy Scouts until two of the boys became Eagle Scouts. I continuedlater on when a need arose again, even with no children of my ownin scouting. On the church level, my husband and I have been activewith the parish Pre-Cana ministry for 23 years. Parenting andmarriage are ministries in and of themselves with no comparisons;however, one of the most rewarding ministries for myself has beenwith Eucharistic Ministering at Mass as well as for the homebound. This ministry, to me, is extremely humbling. As I present the Bodyand Blood of Christ, there is such an appreciation expressed by therecipient that I feel as if I am receiving the greater gift. The visitsto the homebound enrich my life in ways I never expected. Underthe Social Ministry umbrella, I also offer my time and talent at ourOutreach office, ministering to those less fortunate. This ministrybegan for me when we lost a very dear friend and parishioner, SuziPicciano. I had been admiring her fortitude, dedication and love forOutreach for a number of years. My husband had suggested on manyoccasions to start serving there, but with taking care of elderlyparents and, at that time, still with scouting, I kept saying not yet.The day of Suzi’s funeral I went directly to Outreach and signed up.It was the Holy Spirit finally getting through to me that this is whereI am needed.

Another area of ministry is with the HandicappedEncounter Christ, or HEC, retreat. This organization brings togethera handicapped adult with a team member to listen to peace talks andthen discuss the subject matter of how Christ is involved in ourlives. We spend three days together for the retreat and then cometogether three more times throughout the year as a group. However, the friendships and bonds that have been created through this “family”are closer than anything one could ever hope for.

The reason I mention all the areas of service in the nameof Christ is not to “toot my own horn” so to speak, but to stress toeveryone that yes, you can do it, too. While raising our sons, I gave

all my time to the family and home. As they grew up andmoved on with their lives, it became “my” time, or, in otherwords, “God’s” time. There are no more excuses. He hasbeen speaking to me over the years, telling me that there isanother purpose to my life…. To serve Him and His people.I have been asked how I “knew” what my calling was, and Ican honestly say it was the Holy Spirit bringing forth God’swishes. Sometimes we just need that little nudge from aspecial someone to make a decision to go ahead with athought or desire that had been on a back burner. Thatspecial someone for me, again, was the Holy Spirit. We’vealways been told to pray when we need help with a decision,or for direction when at a crossroads in life. Sometimesour prayers are answered directly, but more importantly, when they are answered indirectly, that we must act uponthem.

My personal faith journey has taken me fromCatholic school education, which I always treasured, onthrough adulthood. There was a short lapse of church- goingwhen my father passed away suddenly when I was younger.I was very angry with God and couldn’t grasp why He woulddo this to me and my family. During this “away” time, I feltan emptiness, a lacking of something that I couldn’t put myhands on. When I did return to Mass, I felt a deepsatisfaction. As the years have gone on, my faith hasdeepened. This past year I faced a serious medical situation.I turned to my faith for strength both spiritually andphysically. Although we will never understand God’s waysand reasons, we must always trust that His way is the rightway.

As is stated in the Book of Ecclesiastes, “there isan appointed time for everything, and a time for every affairunder the heavens”. Is there a time now for you to serveGod? Is He calling you to be His servant among the peoples? Are we grateful for messengers of God in our lives, thepeople, events and words that come to us at just the righttime, and help us to grow? Are we grateful to God for callingus to work with OUR gifts, and grateful that we can be ofservice and to use our talents in a loving way? Let us goforth and think about what God says our purpose in life is.Pray for that sign. Heed the calling.

The ministries at St. Kilian are successful not onlythrough our time and talent, but also through the financialcontributions of parishioners. I encourage you to “take astep” during the “Treasure” portion of our StewardshipRenewal, in assisting this parish to do God’s work here inFarmingdale.

Thank you for listening, and maybe the next timeyou receive “that” phone call or open “that” letter in themail, you can consider it a sign from above, as I have.

St. Kilian Respect Life Cycles of FaithDECEMBER 12, 2016OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE“And of his Kingdom there will be no end.” Whenthe angel Gabriel announced God’s message to a pooryoung woman named Mary, it’s no surprise that sheresponded with great surprise! “How can this be?”Of course the biggest question in her mind must havebeen how exactly she was going to “conceive in [her]womb and bear a son,” but that wasn’t the onlyshocking news of the day. This messenger from Godwas also prophesying that her miraculous childwould be the Messiah, the “Son of the Most High”who would “rule over the house of Jacob forever.”As a faithful Jewish woman, Mary knew that thismeant the fulfillment of the ancient hopes of herpeople. And although we don’t know the details,Mary also must have known what it meant for herown life—that she would be the honored mother ofthis King of Kings, and that her role in his kingdomwould also be without end.

So, now, two thousand years later, we stillcelebrate the role of this Queen Mother. We honor herplace in salvation history, but not only as a womanwho once served the mission of the Savior. No, werecognize Mary as a queen who continues to serveand to reign. She has visited and comforted herpeople in her own mysterious, miraculous waysthroughout these two millennia. Today on this feast ofOur Lady of Guadalupe we recall with specialfondness her gentle but authoritative companionshipto the poor peasant, St. Juan Diego, who, much likeMary once upon a time, was entrusted with atremendous mission that took him by surprise.

Like Our Lady and her “little son” Juan, maywe too have the courage to believe that God is callingus to play a part in the mission of the great King ofKings.

“Be patient, brothers and sisters,Until the coming of the Lord.

See how the farmer waits for the preciousfruit of the earth,

Be patient with it until it receives the earlyand late rains.

YOU TOO MUST BE PATIENT” (James 5:7-8)

That last line speaks to all those mothersand fathers to be, who may be consideringan abortion. “You too must be patient”—place your faith in God.

The painting shows Mary’s visitation to hercousin Elizabeth. In their wombs are Jesusand John the Baptist.
