SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

At our two downtown St. Vincent de

Paul campuses people from all walks of

life and virtually every age group bless

us with their volunteer service. Mem-

bers of churches and religious groups

from various denominations assist in our

myriad activities. Students from elementary through

graduate school experience the special joy that springs

from giving their time and compassion to others.

At this time of economic crisis when many people can-

not afford to make financial contributions to charitable

organizations, there are numerous rewarding ways to

give something else of great value to us your time, talent

and desire to help others. Why not give us a call to see

what you can do in helping His beloved poor (623-583-

7303).

Oplatki Christmas Wafers

Oplatki is available in the parish office while limited supply lasts. The Christmas Wafer – Oplatki, is a wonderful central European Christian tradition celebrated by families on Christmas Eve. Tradition history & instructions are included on the package.

We have several new biographies for children 9 – 15 years old. Here are three:

Saint Dominic And The Rosary by Catherine Beebe Dominic is known as the “Athlete of Christ” and the founder of the order that bears his name. The work of the thousands of Dominican priests and sisters all over the world stands today – seven centuries later – as a living memorial to the sanctity of their founder.

Bernadette our Lady’s Little Servant by Hertha Pauli This is the story of the girl to whom the Blessed Virgin appeared as “a little young lady” and revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception. It is the little story of the great miracle of Lourdes.

St. Benedict Hero Of The Hills by Mary Fabyan Windeatt Known as the Father of Western Monasticism, St. Benedict played a major role in Christianization and civilization of post-Roman Eu-rope. The author is well-known for over 20 books on lives of the saints for young people.

Another children’s book we’ve added is:

A Children’s Book of Saints by Hugh Ross Williamson It is a collection of biographies of 36 of the world’s saints. Young people can read about Saint Wenceslaus and his wicked brother Boleslaus; Saint Genevieve and Saint Francis of Assisi. The book has many charming black and white drawings which will delight children of all ages.

…...I HAD A DREAM Joseph. I don’t understand it, not really, but I think it was about a birthday celebration for our Son. I think that was what it was all about. The people had been preparing for it for about six weeks. They had decorated the house and bought new clothes.

They’d gone shopping many times and bought new elaborate gifts. It was peculiar, though, because the presents weren’t for our Son. They wrapped them in beautiful paper and tied them with lovely bows and stacked them under a tree. Yes, a tree, Joseph, right in their house. They’d decorated the tree also. The branches were full of glowing balls and sparkling ornaments. There was a figure on top of the tree. It looked like an angel might look.

Oh, it was beautiful. Everyone was laughing and happy. They were all excited about the gifts. They gave the gifts to each other, Joseph, not our Son. I don’t think they even know Him. They never mentioned His name.

Doesn’t it seem odd for people to go to all that trouble to celebrate someone’s birthday if they don’t know Him. I had the strangest feeling that if our Son had gone to this celebration, He would have been intruding.

Everything was so beautiful, Joseph and everyone so full of cheer, but it made me want to cry. How sad for Jesus not to be wanted at His own birthday celebra-tion. I’m glad it was only a dream. How terrible, Joseph, if it had been real.

As you gather to light your Advent wreath, use the following prayer to focus your reflection. When praying the last sentence, trace a Sign of the Cross on your forehead, lips, and heart, as we do at Mass before the Gospel reading.

Heavenly Father, You sent John the Baptist to prepare the people for the coming of Your Son. As Christmas draws closer, help us to prepare, too, so that we may be ready for Christmas day. May Your Word be always in our minds, on our lips, and in our hearts. Amen.
