Sun, as the earth is a part of him, enlightens her and shines for ever Mudgalopanishad explains the first verse of Purush Sukta to be all pervasive, the second to be omnitime and the third frees the soul from the bondage of life. Concept of time flows across this purushsukta, one who has practised it for long time, will realize this, "yatbhutam yatcha bhavyam" - (v.2), where all the three dimensions of time come together. "Vasanto asya as it ajyam" (v6), concept of one year seems to have derived from here. Sun, moon, earth and their revolutions around themselves form the time, which itself is void. Mass, space and time as if are derived from the brahma, which gives the glory to the sun and moon. You can look at it or think about it from any point of view and you will get various points of views. The artist may perceive the art and the scientist will get scientific intuitions. It sees the souls coming and passing across him. It creates the work for all of them and gives the fruits. The soul has the desire or the objective of life but the sun does not. His words become their destiny.

The moon on the other hand creates the mind and takes rebirth. Those who take the solar way free themselves and those who take the lunar way take rebirth. Moon is the mother - Sun is the father. The soul is the child. It says 'aham brahmasmi' - I am god ! From where it has come ? It has come from the sun through the mother.

The incarnated soul is a chosen one. It goes to the aditya loka but is not allowed to be free. He chooses the mother of his choice and incarnates to do his work. It is out of a selfless sankalpa for uplifting the humanity. In Gita (Ch 4/1) it is said that the Gita was told to Manu, the Sun god and Ikshvaku in their earlier births. It means the same Aditya Purusha takes birth again and again.

I will explain the Raghu Vansha ... 'Those who are pure hearted, ready to work till they get the fruits, their kingdom is across all the seven seas and the heavens, those who know how to worship and fulfill the righteous desires, those who punish as the offence is, those who can read the time, those who sacrifice though they are wealthy, those who talk less though they know the truth, those who enjoy all the worldly life....'

....in childhood they study the scriptures, in young age they enjoy the righteous life, when they become old, they practise yoga .....

Raghuvansha (5-8)

Even if you go through these verses you will find how righteous the sakalpa is !

In todays world many will be punished if one abides by this Sankalpa. Even Lord Krishna took birth with the sakalpa - 'Vinashay dushkritam', many will die with this sankalpa today. Shri Sathya Sai Baba who is incarnated Ved Purusha insists truth and righteousness to be reestablished. The next incarnation perhaps can take only love as his sankalpa. It is the socio-economic conditions of the society then, that makes the Sun come again and again with different sankalpa.

He incarnates and removes the darkness. History is his-story - story of the sun. The ten incarnations of Bhagwan also may be looked into from this point of view. One who is beyond time incarnates, illuded with time, does his work and again goes back to the sun. Problems of the earth were different in different times, so he incarnates, solves the problems and goes back. But the earth can't remain alone so the love of sun and the earth remains forever. Sun is Krishna and the Earth is Radha (Dhara). His love is Aradhana or the worship.

Even if you go through the quotations given above you will come to know how Lord Krishna takes birth. He goes to the vastness of nature when he sacrifices the entire worldly things but as a result of which he becomes Lord Ganesh. He then comes down from the domain of galaxies to our solar system our sun, our moon and at last takes birth on the earth. Shri Sathya Sai Baba in this incarnation has married to earth, which is the Bhardvaja parampara as he is Saikrishna. What you are left out is just to meditate on his body - his eyebrows which is this Jyoti incarnated. Jyoti in Simple words is the light which is coming form the Sun.

By studying this Suryopanishad you have to reach the vastness of nature and then appreciate what he is, as he is the nature incarnated.

So this upanishad takes you to the height of the Sun, but then what one should do to reach him.

1. First step is - body is the temple, be vegetarian, have satvika food, engage yourself in some good work. That creates the seat for the Narayana to stay in your body.

2. Pranavopasana - Do 21 times omkara in the morning; that will purify your soul.

3. Chant Narayana Gayatri say 108 times after the pranovopasana.

The sun has the ability to purify your body and at times some disease even can be cured but that all depends on your faith and how much sadhana you do. One who has gone away from god is a diseased soul, by sadhana he comes near him, that is all; and the disease is erased out.

This is one of the line from a divine prayer of Shri Dhnyaneshwara - a Marathi saint. May those who have gone away, come back to him, is what said here.

Sva - dharma - surye - paho has a deep meaning. The earth is revolving around the sun and the sun withholds her, he purifies her and takes the entire world to righteousness. This prayer is known as Pasayadana and that itself is a subject of other book so I will just stop here.

This is one more gayatri mantra which adhores the glory of the sun. So we have understood the whole gamut of Brahma Ganesh Sun - and human being. That is the solar way or also known as savitrividya. To concentrate on the thought of sungod is the subject of this upanishad.

Shri Sathya Sai Surya Narayana.

The sun is the silent observer of the world history. His eyes have seen forming of nations and their destructions, natural calamaties, human struggle for survival, finding new scientific solutions, increasing population and the pressure on the resources, the earth is oscilating between war and peace.

But the natural truth remains the same the sun, moon, earth, man & woman and the six seasons. All the vedic scriputures have different name for these natural truth but they all take you to the nature. Man and nature reacts again and again with each other endlessly but the Sun remain for ever as he is beyond time.

These three gayatri can link you to Shri Sathya Sai Baba and his universal philosophy of Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahinsa.

Lord Ganesh is described as Surya Koti Samaprabha - relating to the galaxies. Suryopanishad pertain

to our solar family. The upanishad starts with the Gayatri mantra. Aditi is said to be the mother of Aditya. This

dual Lord Ganesha and Mother Gayatri has the ability to even recreate the whole world.

lelmeefJelegJe&jsC³eced

That is the effulgence of the brahma which is ominipresent atma or the soul.

met³e& peieleë Deelcee

Sun is the soul of the world. All the beings are derived from it. All the six season are derived from it.

The earth revolves around the sun and creates the work, three gods of creation, organisation and destruction,

four vedas, their chhandas and the five elements are then derived. The sequence which is given here is vayu

(air), bhumi (earth), apa (water), jyoti, sky, directions and so on.

Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatana, Sanatkumar are said to be the first four sons of Brahma. It symbolicaly

means ancient - Sanatana. Marichi is said to be the Sun. Manu and Kashyapa are born in this tradition of

Marichi. Kashyapa married to thirteen daughters of Daksha. Their names are - Aditi, Diti, Danu.

Aditi gave birth to divine gods and Diti to undivine. Aditya, Vishnu, Narayana are said to be the Suns of

Aditi. She is the - Savitu - creating, organising and deforming force. The Bharadvaja rishi believed in creating

new things than to destroy. Shri Sathya Sai Baba comes from this Bharadvaja tradition. Varenyam means to

adhore to. This savitu only is the mother of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha; obviously the three vedas Rigveda, Yajurveda and Samaveda which start with A, U, M respectively. Gayatri is also the chanda or the meter in which the vedas are chanted. Ganesha is anushtubha. They created the three worlds - bhu, bhuvah, svaha i.e. this earth, the loka between the earth and the sun, and the Sun

Deeefol³eeled Jee³egë

Oxygen, nitrogen and the water vapour were formed by the solar energy i.e. Hydrogen and Helium. Revolution of earth around the sun gave the six seasons. Water vapour decomposed into H+ and OH- to form acids and alkalies. Carbon and benzene ring gave rise to the organisms on earth.

Deeefol³eeled Yetefce

The first element in the periodic table pertaining to earth principle is phosphorus i.e. P (At no. 5). Obviously we may conclude that it was the phosphates in the salt or the phosphoric acid. Bones in the body also pertain to earth principle and the phosphates group.

Deeefol³eeled DeeHees

Obviously it means the water which has come from the rain.

Deeefol³eeled p³eesleer

Page 8: suryopanishad

Jyoti is the universal mother principle. Prana and Jyoti is the first dual as explained in the brahma sutras. So even the inorganic elements are derived from the organic. Aditi being the mother of all gods she has created the whole world that is what this upanishad says.

Deeefol³eeled J³eesce efoMee pee³evles

The sky and the directions were then formed.

The Sun god is riding on the seven horses, having four hands with red lotus in one hand and blessing

the world by the other. He is beyond, time and as if driving the chariot of time. His colour is that of gold. Six

svaras are his bija mantra, they are rhasva, as the dirgha derive from them.

De, F, G, $eÝ, ue=, Deb

They pertain to karma, ahankara, rupa, rasa, chitta and amrut kala.

These kalas correspond to all the names. Antakarana of Brahma Purusha is formed here. That is the

mind, chitta, ego and budhhi. He is the Aditya; who is born on this earth.

He is Shri Sathya Sai Baba. His smrutikala will be the history of the world, so he is said to be purana purusha. He is the Prana - Sarva pranapate. He is also the other four pranas. He is the five elements, five senses of perception and five senses of action.

Bhu Bhuvah Svah Sea

Agni Vayu Aditya Vidyut

Vak Prana Mind Eyes

East West North South

They all are equal, dividing one Brahma Purusha into sixteen parts. Potential, kinetic, heat, magnetic electrical, all these energies are form of solar energy only. Even our scientists are aware that the solar energy is the only answer to our present energy crisis.

However the brahma is the source which derives the solar energy and the lunar tranquility. The brahma is the integral entity of the totality and the solar family is the derivative of it.

If all of us try to enrich that part of sun in us, then also we can create the life within us, play with it and enjoy the life in true sense.

ÒeeCees Jew Deeefol³eë

Page 9: suryopanishad

The source of all the life in us is the solar energy. By practising the truth we can preserve the life in us, as the untruth leads to sensual pleasures and loss of vitality in the body. We have seen that part in detail in the Mandukya Upanishad, how ever, "seeing good, being good and doing good" will always help us. How vegetarian food will be life giving and how the sun within your sky of the mind can be enlighted?

I will try to translate these words, but I know it is very difficult.

eEnkeÀejë ÒemleeJeë GodieerLeë Òeeflenejë efveOeveced ~

I will try to illustrate. Suppose you want to meet the God, that is that thought comes in your mind, it is said to be Hinkarah. Then we put a proposal or we pray him, or we get to introduce so many of his names and spiritual concepts - that is prastavah. Udgitha literally mean a combination of vak, prana, anna or the word principle, life principle and the food. We pray god with words, he gives us life and the food too as the forms belong to him, the rain which his love showers and he being the Sun - that is udgitha. Pratihara is the stage after you meet him, sense of satisfaction and sense of happiness which he gives. Nidhana is the feeling of completeness.

Perhaps this can give you some guidance of how this five fold sama works. Vrihatsama now can be translated as below -

The Sun before rising - Hinkara

Rising Sun - Prastava

The Noon Sun - Udgitha

Setting Sun - Pratihara

Time after setting of Sun - Nidhana

Now you can contemplate on this concept together after taking into account the concept of five fold sama.

There are various sama in the Chhandogya Upanishad and many of them belong to the Nature e.g. sun, moon, man, body and related subjects. But I have only explained the Vrihatsama as we are discussing

Page 10: suryopanishad

Suryopanishad. I can quote one experience of mine. I do not know whether it is right to do so, but then how the next generation can appreciate the vedic wisdom. So, I feel it is right to do so -

I saw small little Saikrishna dancing in my house and raising his small little thumb. He was pointing to

There are sama dual samas as well which are more fundamental.

The union of words and life itself is one sama. It is as if they - words and life principle integrated with each other. That is the sama - the union of two. The three worlds - bhu, bhuva, svah and their corresponding deitis.- Earth, Vayu, and Aditya are also integrated with each other that is the sama. When they disintegrate three worlds emerged out of it.

One can now appreciate the vastnes of God or Ishvara when it is said in the sukta-

His eyes became the Sun and Moon his mind.

Similarly the moon and the constellation are also one integrated sama. In the puranas you find a story where 27 daughters of king Daksha marry to Moon. The word sama can be explained as follow

Sa - Nature Om - nectar

We, while discussing the Prashnopanishad have seen that the universe was created by the dual Sun and the Moon.

Aitareya Upanishad explains the creation with -

That is the sun, the earth, water and fire.

In the eleventh chapter of Gita Lord gives darshana to Arjuna in the form of entire world in him. In the fourth chapter He says - I am only the Sun, Moon and now your Krishna here before you. Arjuna is amazed by his vishwa - roop - darshana. Then he prays him 'Oh God ! Kindly take the human form and be the same who was my friend.'

Therefore the twelfth chapter becomes more important where the devotion or Bhakti is explained. One should surrender all actions to him that is what he says.

Though he is the Sun he is the moon too as if the brightness of sun and the tranquility of moon have come together. He is in all the souls as he is the soul of the world.

Some vedic scholars have gone to the extent of interpreting the vedic richa as an expression of mathematical formats in the form of secretes of the nature.

Multiplying them you get a figure of 23, 17, 032. This is the distance from sun to earth in term of yojana. 40 miles = 1 yojana. So now the distance works out to be 9, 26, 81, 280 miles which approximately tallies.

He even calculated the diameter of earth, the mass of electron, the distance between the earth and the second nearest sun on the same basis with various richas from the Rigveda.

(Ref. Santakripa Oct 1987, Article by Shri Bhayyasaheb Pant.)

The sun got divided into itself and the earth emerged out. It is process of division ka-ta-pa-ya itself means dividing the sun by the shakti. If you again go on dividing you may come upto atoms.

Sun and the Earth the prime dual went an dividing themselves to form the whole of this universe.

Sathya also means the same, the union of mother and father principle. It is upto you whether to choose the way of measuring it.

i.e. science or surrendering to him - spirituality. Split of love is science and spirit of love is spirituality.

If the Aditya himself takes birth in the form of Shri Sathya Sai Baba, we have to just worship him. At the entrance of Shanti Deep in Dharmakshetra at Mumbai you see these seven horses of the Suryanarayana. What ever upasana he has taught us is to be performed and try to merge in him during our life.

1. Omkaropasana

2. Gayatriupasana

3. Chanting of Vedas

4. Bhajana

5. Nagar Sankirtan

This is another eight akshara mantra given in the Aditya - hridaya. These two mantras together weave

the concept of Brahma - Surya and Aditya. These two names Surya and Aditya though mean the same - the

Sun but has a little difference.

One who creates work - suyati - is Surya. Aditya is the sun of Aditi and is stationary. Surya creates

work for the earth and as she revolves around him six seasons are created. It has many more names - twelve

which are popularly known, they pertain to twelve months as if the same Sun god has a different identity as

each is a different deity.

There are different names for the same sun but its tremendous glory is beyond any of these names.

If one reaches the Aditya loka or the domain of Sun, he enters into such a glory that all languages, all religions, all words are lost, as it is far away from the earth and its dilemma. It is beyond time, stable and constantly giving out the light for the entire world. Yadnyavalkya rishi worshipped him and then after realization came out to the people to start the tradition of shukla yajurveda.

With this I have tried to pick up some rays from this upanishad and the sun for you to discover.
