MESSAGE FROM

THE PRESIDENT

This year is the fifth anniversary of the St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc.. It is true that the Foundation has come a long way, and we are proud to celebrate our fifth year with exciting new projects.

In line with utilizing art for a cause, this quarter, we are also launching our second limited edition print project, featuring the maestros Malang Santos and Ramon Olazo. The works of the two masters have been printed on specialized paper. Proceeds from the sales of the prints will benefit the Foundation and our causes.

We also celebrated the blessing of the Executive Suite 1651 in St. Lukes - Global City, which has been inaugurated as the Jimenez Family Room. The proceeds from the generous donation of the family has been alloted to Medical Social Services, Medical Research, Continuing Medical Education for Doctors and Scholarships for qualified students of the St. Luke’s College of Medicine - William Quasha Memorial. And last but not the least, we laud the efforts of the doctors, nurses, and associates who joined the surgical mission in Cuyo, Palawan.

These are a testament to the fact that when we work with each other, the light of our generosity will continue to reach more people.

Maxima D. Ycong is a tough cookie. This 70-year-old was diagnosed with none-healing wounds with osteomyelitis in 2016. At the time she was admitted to the hospital, Maxima was left with no choice but to allow the doctors to amputate her leg below her left knee. It was the option that would save her life. But Maxima was hesitant and afraid about the operation, and even harder was that when the bill arrived, the family expressed dismay because they could not afford to raise a hundred thousand pesos. Maxima’s daughter, Cristina, who is always at her mother’s aid, is an on-call laundress, and

uses her meager P5,000 to sustain her mother and her children’s daily needs.

Luckily, the two approached the St. Luke’s Social Service Department. And it is through the help of the Social Service Department that the family has found some peace of mind.

Today, Maxima is all smiles. “Ngayon maganda ang pakiramdam ko,” she reassures us, as she recounts the hardships she and her family had to face. “Alaga kami dito ng mga doktor, mga staff, kahit ’yung mga guard mababait,” she says. “Minsan masama ang pakiramdam ko pag alis ng bahay, pero pag pasok ko sa St. Lukes maganda na ang pakiramdam ko.”

Maxima used to work with the church, but now her illness renders her unable to do physical labor to help with the costs. Cristina says she has take on multiple jobs just to help pay for everything. But thanks to countless blessings and their faith, they say, it must’ve been the grace of God that allowed for them to be chosen by the Foundation to be a beneficiary. S

Mauro Malang Santos, commonly known as the artist “Malang”, was truly ahead of his time. He began his journey in the arts as a cartoonist and comic artist, best known for his series Kosme the Cop, Chain Gang Charlie, and Beezlebub.

In 1958, he was awarded for editorial design by the Art Directors Guild of the Philippines. He then won consequent competitions and awards, including the annual art competitions held by the Art Association of the Philippines. By 1963, he was included in the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines. Malang launched the Art for the Masses movement in 1966, bringing printmaking to a larger number of enthusiasts at affordable prices.

He was an icon in the local art scene for his distinct painting style, far different from the modernist styles of his peers at that time. Nonetheless, his work was recognized by art patrons, critics, and art lovers alike.

Romulo Olazo’s astonishing abstracts are riddled with complexity and emotion. His trademark work, or the “diaphanous paintings” seen here, is recognized because of its layering technique, which can be traced back to the master’s method of glazing thin and even layers of oil paint.

This unique style was actually born out of printmaking. Olazo was also a talented printmaker, and he even put up workshops at his home alongside artists like Chabet and Fernando Modesto. It was in 1970, when he started to focus on printmaking, that allowed him to break into the Philippine art scene. In 1972, he won the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. His silkscreened print technique is what inspired his “diaphanous paintings.”

He was trained under the tutelage of National Artist and pioneer of modern art: Victorio Edades.

The St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation Inc., in partnership with the doctors of St. Luke’s – Global City, successfully conducted a surgical mission for the indigent residents of Cuyo, an old town in Palawan. The mission was headed by Dr. Benjamin Campomanes. The efforts of the doctors resulted in 40 major and 64 minor surgeries, 43 medical risk assessments and more than 900 free consultations for the Cuyonons. Patients received free procedures such as appendectomy, cysts excision, normal spontaneous delivery, segment cesarean section, thyroidectomy, dilatation and curettage, herniorrhaphy, tubal ligation, fistulectomy, encephalocele repair, and cheiloplasty, among others.

Cuyo is a fourth class municipality and is located in one of the remotest parts of Palawan, with only a population of more than 20,000. Its residents, who are mostly engaged in fishing,

face chronic challenges in accessing adequate healthcare services and facilities.

The local residents were grateful for the team of doctors and health volunteers from St. Luke’s who not only delivered effective and efficient services, but also approached them with utmost compassion.

The Surgical Mission was undertaken in cooperation with Ms. Grace Gobing, the local government of Cuyo, Palawan headed by Hon. Andrew L. Ong, Cuyonon LSK Foundation, Cuyonon Baragatan Manila, Air Juan, Best Dressed Women of the Philippines 2015, RBGM, Covidien and Zuellig Family Foundation.
