Aflac offers ‘financial safety net’Brower opens new Atchison

agency, hopes to help locals

fill insurance gaps

When economic times are tough, most individuals and businesses are forced to cut down expenses. But according to Patrick Brower, insur-ance isn’t something people can afford to cut. In fact, it is even more important during these times.

“In these challenging economic times, most of us cannot afford to be without a paycheck,” said Brower, who recently opened an Aflac agency in Atchison. “Aflac offers a financial buffer when accidents and health situations arise so that our clients can focus on the matter at hand without the extra stress of worrying about short-term money.”

Brower started selling Aflac in September of 2008 and is located at 1101½ Parallel in Atchison. He can be reached by calling 314-952-5802. During his time as a Benedictine College student, Brower said he fell in love with the area, and there appears to be a market here for the services Aflac provides.

Aflac offers supplemental insur-ance policies such as a cancer poli-cy, accident, hospital, dental, vision and other policies. These policies allow individuals to customize their coverage.

“Aflac doesn’t replace health insurance,” Brower said. “Its poli-cies supplement health insurance

policies to improve one’s ability to afford setbacks and fill the finan-cial gaps missing in the traditional health care insurance policies.”

While most businesses in the area offer health insurance plans, Brower expects to reach out to those businesses to fill the supplemental insurance void. Businesses would be able to offer Aflac to their em-ployees at no cost to the business. Individual policy-holders could then pick which supplemental policies fit their needs.

And one of the biggest benefits is cash.

“Supplemental policies pay you the cash, not the hospitals and doc-tors, so that you can cover expenses such as bills, lost wages, and the like,” Brower said.

In addition to building relation-ships with area businesses, Brower said he hopes to educate people in the area, many of whom are unfamiliar with the benefits of

supplemental insurance. In an age when insurance is often expensive and time-consuming when filing

a claim, Brower said he can do his part raise the quality of life in Atchison by offering some alterna-tives.

“It is unique, affordable, and practical, especially in these eco-nomic times when families need an extra financial safety net,” he said. “Most people have a month or less as a financial reserve to buffer them for extraordinary expenses. These policies can provide the extra funds for unexpected health care expenses without dipping into one’s savings accounts.”

Legislative Coffees

Beginning Feb. 7, area residents will have three opportunities to discuss legisla-tive issues with their elected officials during a series of legislative coffees in Atchison.

All legislators whose districts include all or part of Atchison County have been invited to attend the three meetings, scheduled for Feb. 7, March 7 and April 4. Each of the events will begin at 9 a.m. at the Santa Fe Depot, 200 S. 10th St., in Atchison.

The series of informal events, spon-sored by the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce and AT&T, have had strong attendance by area legislators in the past, especially with the state representatives most involved with the area. The list of invitees includes Sen. Dennis Pyle, R-Hi-

awatha, Rep. Jerry Henry, D-Cummings, Rep. Melanie Meier, D-Leavenworth, and Rep. Lee Tafanelli, R-Ozawkie, in addition to the U.S. Congressmen from Kansas. Henry and Meier have committed to attend this Saturday’s event.

The legislative coffees are scheduled while the Kansas Legislature is in session, which gives legislators a chance to receive direct input from citizens while the issues are being debated in Topeka.

Coffee and donuts will be served at each of the events.

‘See How They Run’ on stage at Theatre

Atchison

Theatre Atchison is excited to present on stage Philip King’s SEE HOW THEY RUN, a laugh-out-loud com-edy, just in time for Valentine’s Day Weekend. So swift is the action, so involved the situations, so rib-tickling the plot that at the show’s finish audiences are left as exhausted from laughter as though they had run a foot race. Galloping in and out of the four doors of an English vicarage are an American actor and actress (he is now stationed with the air force in England), a cockney maid who has seen too many American movies, an old maid

who “touches alcohol for the first time in her life,” four men in clergyman suits presenting the problem of which is which, for disguised as one is an escaped prisoner, and a sedate Bishop aghast at all these goings on and the trumped up stories they tell him.

Directed by Kurt Schlanker (Atchison), with Technical Direction by Eric Van Horn (Leavenworth), the cast of SEE HOW THEY RUN includes Walt Boyd, Brenda Henson, Sarah Perdue Schlanker, Eve Wayman, Camden Burton, Gerry Martin, Steve Moniz, Dustin Roe, Tim Walters, and Sean Chase. Serving as Stage Manager is Jyll Chase (Atchison). Connie Shalz (St. Joseph) is Costume Coordinator and Angela Skidmore (Atchison) is Props Coordinator.

This show is a perfect opportunity to treat your Sweetheart to an evening of fun! Performances of see how they run are Fridays & Saturdays, February 13, 14, 20 & 21 at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays, February 15 & 22 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10, for students $6.
