Palm Ridge escape manhunt underway

Dr Daan and Yvonne GroblerAnother major step toward recreation was the purchase of a portion of the farm Elandsfontein on behalf of the Reading Country Club. This too was a product of its time. There was a swimming pool and dance hall at the Windsor Park Country Club, which was taken over by the Health Committee in 1934 and later still renamed Grewar Park, and the Golf Club in Germiston. But National Socialism in Germany was growing more aggressive, and repercussions were felt across the world. An Alberton resident who applied to join the Germiston Golf Club was refused because he happened to be Jewish. And so the Reading Country Club came into being, initiated by a determined group of Jewish businessmen who wanted nothing more than a bit of relaxation and some healthy exercise. It was no mean feat, requiring some 250 founder members contributing 60 pounds each – a staggering sum, when in comparison to the entire Eeufees celebrations had cost 31 Pounds to fund.
Another first on the leisure front was the cinema erected by Mr Joffee. No more scrapping of uncomfortable wooden folding chairs in the Town Hall – this was a touch of Hollywood luxury for young Alberton. Sy vertel hoe die tehuis begin het en hoe dinge nou gaan met hulle. Daar is so baie behoeftes waar ons almal dalk ‘n bietjie kan help. Hierdie kinders het maar al die gewone behoeftes wat elke kind het. Hiervan natuurlik is die belangrikste baie liefde en aandag. Hulle het natuurlik ook kos, klere en allerlei dinge nodig. Die dames leer ook meer van China in ons internasionale gedeelte en geniet dan ook ‘n tipiese Chinese dis. Rina Mowbray vertel meer oor die voël van die jaar asook die kunstenaar van die jaar. Time flies when you are having fun. Corny, I know, but truthful. I don’t know how much the ladies are going to enjoy the upcoming Movember, but it’s always fun to see how creative the guys are with their mustaches. The Absa Currie Cup final also came to an end on Saturday, with loads of ecstatic Shark supporters flooding all the social mediums.A few schools held their annual award evenings and we would like to congratulate all of the students who did remarkably well. Six men were arrested in Alberton over the weekend in connection with dealing in drugs. According to Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, the first suspect was found in possession of five packets of Cat and police later found 95 packets hidden in a trash bin inside his apartment. Kgasago said that the total street value of the drugs was estimated at R30 000.Kgasago said that two Nigerian nationals were found in possession of 28 packets of Cat worth R7000, 40 rocks valued at R6000 and one gram of cocaine valued at R300.Two men were arrested in Brackendowns for possession of one kilogram of crystal meth, estimated at R6000.
Following a tip-off, police arrested a 26-year-old man in a house in Topez Street in Mayberry Park for possession and dealing in dagga, he was found with seven packets of dagga worth R70.All six arrested suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 October on charges of possession and dealing in illicit substances.

Support the little fighter11 months, 24 operations, 4 different hospitals, and his brave parents stand by his bedside hoping that their little boy makes it through.Baby Sergio was born via an emergency C-Section, two months premature after his mother, Leigh de Sousa, had accident and fell at a grocery store, causing bleeding on Sergio’s brain.Little Sergio De Sousa was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy after birth, and spent 8 months in three different hospitals. In August, baby Sergio was transferred to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital where he has been receiving additional treatment.A few months ago Baby Sergio was diagnosed with meningitis and was given 24 hours to live, but hopeful mother Leigh never stopped believing in Sergio, who has undergone many operations and has had many infections but somehow always makes it through.With medical bills on the rise, the De Sousa family have lost their Primrose home and furniture to settle the accounts. The family will be hosting a ladies fundraiser for Sergio in Linbro Park. Dave Parkinson writes:Many people, including me, are very quick to crucify bad service and are very rarely prepared to stick their necks out and give compliments for outstanding service.On the evening of Wednesday, 16 October, during the rain, a problem occurred with the electricity pole supplying power to my house, leaving us with no power.I phoned the Customer Care Centre and after quite a few minutes my call was answered. I explained the problem to the centre operator and informed him that this had happened before and then I waited three days before power was restored.Not 15 minutes after putting the phone down a vehicle pulled up at my house with an electrician. I explained the problem to him. He needed a truck with a hydraulic lift to reach the top of the pole, and would return as soon as possible if a truck was available.True to his word, in less than half an hour he was back and after a couple of minutes my power was restored.All this in less than one hour. That has to be fantastic service and well worth a compliment to the electrician, Peter, for such prompt service.Also a compliment to the Centre Operator for passing on my problem so swiftly.I do not have his name but my job reference number might help his superiors to find out who he is and thank him - Reference No: 900771.Thank you guys, keep up the good service.

I have a number of questions regarding the whole e-tolling process, the first of which is: what happens to all the money collected via the fuel levy (I’ve heard figures of R40 billion or more bandied about)? This levy was imposed on us to pay for road maintenance and upgrading, yet I wonder how much (if anything) has actually been allocated for the purpose over the last 20 years. This alone would have covered the full cost of the Gauteng upgrade process.Secondly, what is the actual cost of the upgrading of the highways, excluding the massive cost of the e-toll gantries? We then need to strip out the cost of administering this cumbersome system, which will include a budget for law enforcement. My guess is that this cost will be much more than 40% of the total costs of the whole project, which we are now expected to pay for.The whole argument, which is used in favour of the project, seems to revolve around a “user pays” principal. To state that those who do not use the highways do not gain from the upgrade is nonsense. If the highways are not in place, all roads in Gauteng will take extra strain (which is probably what will happen with people trying to avoid the tolls). As the economic heart of South Africa, an increase in transport costs here will affect prices throughout the country. There is already an exemption for mini-bus taxis that won’t have to pay tolls, so where does the “user pay” principal apply here? Or is this “concession” possibly due to the fact that there will be difficulties in enforcing payment from an industry that is notorious for flouting the law?Let’s look at an alternative funding method.
Ignoring the fact that we already pay by means of the above mentioned fuel levy, why can the authorities not add an extra cent or two per litre to the cost of fuel in Gauteng? The price already differs to other regions, so they cannot claim it can’t be done. Yes, it will mean a little extra strain, spread across all road users, but the cost would be far lower and far easier to administer. Finally, what happened regarding the public hearings that took place a couple of months ago? These were rolled out with great fanfare to appease the public once it became known that there was major opposition to e-tolling. As far as I am aware, there were only dissenting voices at these hearings, yet nothing has changed. I have always been under the impression that public hearings are held to actually gauge public opinion, not just to tick a box on a ‘To Do’ list and then to ignore the outcome of said hearings. What has become of “listening to the voice of the people”? Apart from government, SANRAL and those who will benefit financially from this system, has anybody made positive submissions regarding this system?There are many other unanswered questions regarding this debacle, but I believe that these points alone should be enough to put a stop to the project. Unsung heroine of AlbertonIn any community there are unsung heroes or heroines. Pearl Gabler is one such heroine.Pearl has lived in the Alberton area for 45 years and has been involved in badminton coaching as well as working at Rand Airport. Since her retirement some five years ago, Pearl has been a radio controller with her local CPF (Community Policing Forum). Pearl patrols every weekend and on public holidays, in order that the other volunteers can spend time with their families.A number of elderly people, or those living alone, are connected to the network and Pearl makes contact with these people if they haven’t checked in for a day or two. This means people can remain on their own knowing there is help available should they need it.
One of Pearl’s contributions is to take photos of the dogs in the neighbourhood, so that when a dog is found in the street she can identify where it’s come from and return the dog immediately. In addition, if someone’s pet has been poisoned, Pearl will take round a photo of the dog to the owners as a memento. This unselfish act means so much to people. She encourages people to sterilise their dogs, as this prevents wandering, and she also takes any strays she finds to Alberton SPCA.Pearl is a great animal lover and has five dogs of her own who are her great loves. People who don’t live in Gauteng don’t have to pay for the upgrading of the highways in that province. However, if they travel on those roads, they will have to get a day-pass - which is easy to do. The application of the user-pays principle is authorised by law and has been carefully considered – in the construction of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) and in many other instances – as a matter of policy by the National Treasury, in collaboration with other departments and agencies of state.“There were a few funding methods the Government considered in funding the GFIP. One was the much touted fuel levy, which was found to be unfair and unsustainable in the long. “The fuel levy is a nationally raised tax. It would
be inequitable to expect all road users in the country to pay for heightened levels of road services in Gauteng while they do not enjoy the benefit of similar roads in their provinces. After careful consideration Government decided to use the other funding model, that is, users of the inner Gauteng highways have to pay. The user-pay model is sustainable over the long term and fairer - if you don’t use the upgraded highways, you don’t pay,” explained the communications manager of the South African National Road Agency (SANRAL), Vusi Mona.However, the user-pay principle kicks in for all who use the tolled roads, even those who don’t live in Gauteng but have to travel through the province or have business within it. This is best done by obtaining a day-pass. It cannot be done through a retailer, but there are three other options:
Via the e-toll website - www.sanral.co.za;Going to a conveniently located e-toll Customer Service Centres - in some shopping malls and along the highway itself; Phoning the e-toll call centre at 0800 SANRAL (726 725).“If you’re not a Gauteng resident, the e-tolls won’t affect you in any way - except on the occasion that you do have to use them, he e-tolled roads are only 201km in a province that has a road network of more than 3000km and there are plenty of alternative roads in Gauteng,” Mona said.

Elandspark LSEN School hosted the second annual Gauteng School Chess Tournament on 10 October at Alberton City Hall.The event is the brainchild of the LSEN Schools Chess league, which was formed in 2013. Six LSEN schools attended: 2013 Inners – Kempton Panorama, Elandspark, Gresswold, Olympia Park, Pro-Practicum and Roodepark.The event was presided over by Mr Elrich Grootboom, chess tournament director and member of Ekurhuleni Chess. Mr Renier Stash, head coach at Ekurhuleni chess, acted as Data Processor using the FIDE approved Swiss Arbitor program.
Also in attendance were Mr Riaan Vos, chairman of Ekurhuleni Junior Chess, and his deputy, Mr Jurie Strydom; Mr Victor Lemmer from Mighty Men JHB, who launched the event whit a devotion; and Mr Ockert van Schalkwyk, Supersport commentator and an educator at Elandspark, was master of ceremonies on the day.Elandspark would like to thank all who helped to make this day a success.We congratulate the league for a successful event, and would like to invite other LSEN schools to join the league and prepare to attend the 3rd tournament in 2014.Mr M van der BergCHESS ORGANISER.

The amazing healing power of animals
dogs and cats have amazing abilities to help humans heal both physically or mentally. New research has shown that the soothing sounds of a cat purring can aid the body in a number of ways. A cat’s purr fluctuates between 20-140Hz, and therefore falls into the frequency range that has been proven to be medically therapeutic. A cat purring can help lower stress and blood pressure. Cat owners have 40% less heart attacks than non-cat owners. Furthermore, purring can ease suffering and anxiety, alleviate depression, loneliness and low morale. It can also improve human immune system functioning and increase the neurochemicals associated with relaxation and bonding. Finally the purring vibration is helpful for healing tendons and muscles, infections and swellings and promoting bone strength. What better reasons do you need to adopt a cat? Dogs on the other hand have long been trained to help the blind, deaf and physically disabled and are amazing in their abilities in this regard. They can often detect when someone is about to have an epileptic attack or similar. Dogs can smell cancer; notify their owner if there is something wrong with another dog or family member for example. One lady tells how her Pit Bull wouldn’t stop running between her room and her young son’s room in the middle of the night, so she got up to check and lo and behold the son was struggling to breathe. His life was saved
by the dog.A Japanese study found dog owners visited the doctor 30% less often than non-dog owners. Dog owners have lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Dogs especially can sense when you are unwell and so will
often remain by your side and ‘care’ for you. When you are anxious your cortisol, or stress hormone, kicks in, yet being in the presence of a dog can reduce this considerably. Dogs are excellent for aiding recovery and Top Dogs was established many years ago with the motto ‘Top Dogs spread smiles for miles’. They regularly visit hospitals, hospices, frail care homes, and retirement homes, where they bring company, support, comfort and focus to those they meet. Their President, Angie Thornton writes, “We were visiting terminally ill patients, and as we usually do, we split into small groups and each group visited different patients. However there was one particular man who requested all the dogs visit him, a request we were happy to grant. On our next visit the Sister asked us if we remembered that particular patient, so of course we said we did. She then said “you made his last day on earth a happy one” and went onto say he’d died that night, but all day he’d been telling everyone about his visit from the dogs and how happy they had made him. We’ve had many reports from patients in hospital telling us what a difference the dogs made to them, taking their mind off their fears or their pain for a while, and how the dynamics of the day were changed by the sight, sound or touch of the dogs. Child physical abuse is the intentional infliction of an injury on a child. The following are indicators of possible physical child abuse:

A special mention, matric learner Nyiko Ngxola took the top achiev-er awards in Maths, Physical Science, Life Science and Geography, with an overall academic av-erage of 87%. Nyiko was also awarded the Best Girl Leader award and the Dux Scholar and Achiever of the Year award.

Bringing the medals homeEleven medals were won between 16 athletes at the 2013 South African X Country Championships.Alberton’s Marais Viljoen Athletics Club had another great 2013 X Country season. Fifteen of the club’s athletes qualified to represent their province in there different age groups at the South African X Country Championships, which was held in Potchefstroom in the North West province on 14 September. Two of the club’s athletes unfortunately had to withdraw; Nicole Van Der Merwe withdrew from the championships due to injury and Joshua Voget due to unforeseen circumstances.From the thirteen Marais Viljoen Athletics Club athletes that ran at this year’s South African X Country Championships, two were crowned South African Champions for 2013.Bernadette Wilson, an u/10 girl, won her 2 kilometer race and became a South African champion. Michaela Murat, an u/11 girl, held on to her title and won the South African X Country Championships for the fourth consecutive year. Between these thirteen athletes from the Marais Viljoen Athletics Club, 8 gold individual and team medals were brought home, making their coach and club chairman Deon Swanepoel very proud.The following three athletes, who are from other clubs, are also coached by coach Deon and formed part of his team,: Tharien Erasmus, an u/16 girl from HR Athletics Club, came third and won the bronze medal. Tharien also received a gold team medal. Clinton Swanepoel from the University of Johannesburg’s Athletics Club came seventh in the Senior Men 4 kilometer race, he received a silver team medal. Charine Kruger, also from the University of Johannesburg’s Athletics Club, ran in the Senior Women’s 4 kilometer race.In total 9 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals were won by the sixteen athletes that competed at the 2013 South African X Country Championships. All these athletes are now looking forward to the 2013/2014 Athletics Track and Field season, which has now started.

SA’s number 1 Ninja MidgetThe World of Motorsport ZA is proud to announce that Mr Calvin Pitzer competed in the WOMZA National Championships Oval Track Racing – Tar, on Saturday, 12 October, in the Ninja Midget Class. Calvin was one of the 19 competitors on the field. The competition comprised of 3 heats. Heat one, Calvin drew an 11th position, with a 20 lapper, ending in 1st position. Heat two, the grids were pole inverted, with Calvin standing 8th on the grid and ending heat two with an astounding 2nd place. The hard work in the first two heats paid off and gave Calvin pole position in the final heat. Dedicated to his racing, he maintained his concentration level and ended in a victorious first position. Calvin, needs to be commended for his passion for racing. He prepared weeks prior to the race by toning his weight, by ensuring his race vehicle met all the regulation requirements, and post the event all the vehicles were stripped, checking for eligibility, and his vehicle passed all tests. Calvin Pitzer ended 1st overall in his class, thus crowning him SA number 1 in the Ninja Midget Class for the 2013 season.

Zanmarie takes all the titlesZanmarie Pienaar, a member of the Alberhart Tennis Club in Randhart, won the open ladies singles and doubles, with Jeanne Schmidt, at the Tuks Open that was held over the last two weekends at the High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria.Zanmarie, a former leaner at Marais Viljoen High School, is now a second year B Com Law student at the University of Johannesburg. She is currently ranked 12th on the SATA ranking list for SA open ladies and the tournament included 5 ladies ranked in the top 20. This gives the tournament one of the highest ranking ratings possible for a weekend tournament. Zanmarie started playing tennis at 4 years old and has been coached by Darryl Fourie for the last 10 years.Zanmarie’s performance in the ladies section was equaled by her SA National team member Reinhardt Trollip in the men’s section. Zanmarie and Reinhardt represented the SA team at the Africa Zone VI Games in Lusaka, where Zanmarie won 3 gold medals in the singles, doubles and team event.

With the year drawing to a close it is once again that time of the year when South Africa’s Mo Bros embark on a hairy journey to “Change the Face of Men’s Health”. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, they help raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically, prostate and testicular cancer and male mental health.In South Africa, Movember has partnered with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), where funds raised from each campaign are allocated towards men’s health survivorship and research programmes.From teachers to CEOs, policemen, doctors, students
and musicians – these dedicated men become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of Movember, thereby prompting conversation around the often ignored issues of men’s health.Movember also sheds light on hard-hitting numbers. According to statistics from CANSA, South African men have a shorter life expectancy than South African women. The rate of cancer diagnoses among men is also considerably higher among men,1 in 6 compared to 1 in 8 for women. Known affectionately as Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, participants re-register each year on www.movember.com. Upon registering either as a Mo Bro or Mo Sista, you have the choice to participate as an individual or to start or join a team. The rules are simple, once registered, start clean shaven on 1 Movember. Movember are hosting a series of Shave-in events around the country. As these Mo Bros groom their way through the month, they effectively become walking-talking billboards for men’s health issues, driving the conversation, and in turn awareness while securing donations or sponsorship for their moustaches through their grooming efforts and fine moustachery. In 2012 more than 30 000 South African Mo Bros and Mo Sistas registered and donated their faces to the cause for the month, while being supported by the women in their lives. These efforts resulted in R 7,180, 382 million being raised for local prostate and testicular survivorship and research programmes developed and managed with CANSA.

How vision problems can affect children Werner Fourie Optometrists and tame TIMES set out to make a difference. Vision and learning are closely related. In fact, experts say that approximately 80% of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually. Thus good vision is essential for students of all ages to reach their full academic potential. Some children with learning difficulties show specific behaviours of hyperactivity and distractibility. These children are often labelled as having ADHD. However, undetected and untreated vision problems can cause some of the very same signs and symptoms commonly attributed to ADHD. Due to these similarities some children may be mislabelled as having ADHD when in fact they have an undetected vision problem. Your child can have “20/20” eyesight (20/20 vision - the ability to correctly perceive an object or letter of a designated size from a distance of 20 feet) and still have vision problems that can affect their learning and classroom performance. Visual acuity is just one aspect of good vision.

SOJO and Golden City Dragon Boat Club held their 10th Annual Spring Festival at Old Ouens Pub and Sports Bar at Wemmer Pan Lake on 19 October. The event entailed three aspects - the good, the bad and the funny and tame TIMES was there to capture everything.
ThE GOODThe Annual Spring Festival raises funds for Breast Cancer Awareness. A tribute was paid to Rachel Katz from Reach for Recovery who passed away early this year after a recurrence of cancer. She was not only a breast cancer survivor, but will be remembered as the vibrant woman who over the past nine years actively gathered breast cancer survivors to take part in the dragon boat race.
Eight teams took part. The DA team was definitely the loudest and should be awarded the spirit award. New teams that took part were T.U.P.A, Signman and NuDebt, who made a definite splash on the day. tame TIMES took part for their second year. Other regulars were Weir Minerals, Reach for Recovery and SOJO.The SOJO team won for the third year running. Weir Minerals came second, and Signman was third. tame TIMES came fourth.ThE BADAccording to Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO, the final approval from The City of Joburg’s Joint Operations Committee (JOC) for the event was positive. However, that day JMPD started issuing parking tickets to the public. “This fiasco chased away a good number of
spectators and caused irrefutable damage to the event. No member of the VOC (Venue Operations Committee), apart from one EMS officer, showed up to assist with the safety of the event. Disappointments rolled on when the fire engine did not arrive as promised; only four out of twenty SAPS members were present to police the event; only two out of eight JMPD events and by-law enforcement officers arrived, just in time for their free lunch; the electrical boxes were not operating and the stall keepers had to make other plans to cook food for the public,” Vakaloudis said. tame TIMES has requested comment from EMS events.ThE FunnyHats off to the NuDebt team, as said they made a definite splash at the event. This occurred
after their second race, which they won. With their elated victory the boat capsized with all members having to swim to shore. Their good spirit was seen as all of them came out of the dam with a smile on their face and they were back in dry clothes for the final race. They placed sixth.
The organisers would like to thank PIKITuP for providing litter bins, EMS Pier Department for the bicycle medics, the Red Ants for portable toilets, the jumping castle sponsored by Stallion and the SAPS Water Wing team for ensuring safety on the water. The scene was set for a fairytale ending for Western Province, with a carnival atmosphere and a stadium filled to the rafters. However, the men from Durban had plans of their own to spoil the party. The Newlands faithful were let down for the first time this season, as the Sharks were purely the much better and more well-rounded team on the evening. The Sharks managed to bring the Currie Cup back to the KwaZulu-Natal shores by easily outgunning Western Province 33-19. It was a bruising affair, typical of a coastal final derby, with bodies being placed on the line at each and every contact situation. Although, on paper at least, Province had a backline filled with flair, the Sharks managed to weather the storm well. There were some anxious moments when the two pocket rockets, Cheslin Kolbe and Gio Aplon, got possession of the ball, unfortunately none of which were converted into points. The Sharks had a torrid time in the scrums but their unbeaten opponents
failed to capitalise on their superior dominance in that area. In all other facets of the game, the Sharks were brilliant and far more efficient. Once again the foundation was set by the forwards, evidencing that it is crucial to stamp your authority upfront. Charl McLeod did more than his part by crossing the try line twice. Man of the match, Pieter-Steph du Toit had the game of his life and it is exciting times that lie ahead for Springbok rugby should he team up with gigantic Eben Etsebeth.Province’s stumbling block might have been the fact that they never really encountered a slump throughout the competition. The Sharks hit their peak at exactly the right time and left their most clinical rugby for when it counted the most. The new Sharks management could not have asked for a better way to get their campaign rolling; and with mastermind Jake White now also in the loop, the Sharks will be targeting new horizons.

Ready for World ChampionshipsXolani Nxumalo, a trampoline gymnast from the Alexandra Trampoline Club (ATC), has been selected to represent South Africa as a Senior Trampoline Gymnast at the Trampoline World Championships taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria from 7 to 10 November.Xolani has been afforded the opportunity to compete with the help of donations from sponsors such as Aramex South Africa, who sponsored Xolani’s competition attire as well as his accommodation and meals.Aramex held a handover ceremony in honour of Xolani at their offices in Linbro Business Park, and gave Xolani a cheque for R3000 for spending money as well as a kit bag and other items of clothing to take with to the World Championships.
