Converged Infrastructure

Converged

Converged infrastructure packages multiple information technology

(IT) components into a single, optimized computing solution.

Advantages of converged infrastructure:•Lower costs by

• Lower capital expenses resulting from higher utilization, less cabling, and fewer network

connections

• Lower operating costs resulting from reduced labor via automated data center

management and a consolidating storage and network management infrastructure teams

•Increased IT agility by• Virtualizing IP and Fiber Channel storage networking

• Allowing for single console management

Ease of use, Flexible & Cost optimized isn’t a contradiction

 because .....

 Ease of use

– fast integration of physical and virtual IT Components based on standardized

– „Building Blocks“

 Flexible

– free of choice for CPU & Operating System, Storage and Network

 Cost optimized

– reduce administration cost by monitored IT Components based on rules and

automated Operation tasks

Herewith you will achieve a higher utilization of your IT Resources with

faster reaction time on lower cost

Customer Success: Sanford Health

Business Need

Headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D., Sanford is the largest rural, not-for-profit healthcare system in the

U.S. It services 126 communities in eight states, including parts of South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and California, as well as locations in Ghana. It does so via a network of 35 hospitals, 140 clinic locations, nearly 1,400 physicians and more than 26,000

total employees. And this is just the current scope of the organization. Foell notes, “We announce new locations every year.”

Supporting much of the organization are several software packages, including an enormous electronic medical records (EMR) system, a fully deployed financial ERP suite, payroll and human resources applications, and a document-imaging system. These run on a variety of IBM Power Systems* servers,

including four 750s, two 720s, a 770 and a 740, which host both IBM AIX* and IBM i (the latter on the 720s for its imaging, payroll and HR systems). Sanford also recently deployed three PureFlex chassis with 17 p260 POWER7* compute nodes, two of which are load-balanced for production and the third

for disaster recovery.

Customer Success: Sanford Health

Solution

Solution: Deploying an IBM PureFlex System to reduce server churn and

meet future growthHardware: Four IBM Power Systems 750s, two Power Systems 720s, a Power Systems 770, a Power Systems 740 and three IBM PureFlex chassis

Software: An electronic medical records solution, a financials ERP suite and a document-imaging system

Why did IBM Win?

PureFlex technology offered Sanford:A dense but powerful compute platform A similar BladeCenter mentality

A highly expandable and scalable infrastructure

Page 42: TECHNOLOGIA incontra ARCHITETTURA PureSystems Familytechdata-iframe.ch/ibm_event/Presentations/Pure Family - Walter... · 3 © 2013 IBM Corporation Ease of use, Flexible & Cost optimized

Customer Success: Ledcor IP Holdings, Ltd.

Business Need

Populating its IT systems, Ledcor IP Holdings, Ltd. (Ledcor) had stand-alone servers powered by

inferior microprocessors and supported by low-end storage devices. Ledcor did not have an effective disaster recovery strategy in place and poorly maintained its secondary data center. As the company continued to grow at a rapid pace, the need for a robust infrastructure became urgent. Ledcor sought

to overhaul its IT infrastructure with powerful, virtualized servers supported by effective storage devices and to establish an appropriate disaster recovery strategy at its secondary site.

Page 43: TECHNOLOGIA incontra ARCHITETTURA PureSystems Familytechdata-iframe.ch/ibm_event/Presentations/Pure Family - Walter... · 3 © 2013 IBM Corporation Ease of use, Flexible & Cost optimized

© 2013 IBM Corporation43

Customer Success: Ledcor IP Holdings, Ltd.

Solution

Ledcor engaged IBM Premier Business Partner Softchoice to replace its

incumbent infrastructure with a built-to-order IBM Flex System solution at its production and disaster recovery sites. Each site contains the following:

- Two IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis

- Two IBM Flex System x240 compute nodes

- Eight IBM Flex System x440 compute nodes

- Six IBM Storwize V7000 disk systems

The IBM Flex System compute nodes run the Microsoft Windows operating

system and are virtualized using Oracle VM Server for x86 software. The

nodes support Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Microsoft Exchange

Server software and the Microsoft SharePoint platform. Ledcor controls the

systems from an IBM Flex System Manager node.

Customer Success: Ledcor IP Holdings, Ltd.

Why did IBM Win?

IBM won the business by proposing a solution focused on Ledcor's business needs rather

than on specific technology. The solution offered remedies to the organization's immediate

challenges while also keeping long-term initiatives in mind. The IBM team also engaged the company

in extended meetings to curate a trusted relationship with decision makers.

Customer Success: City of Burnaby

Business Need

The City of Burnaby had a dispersed IT infrastructure comprising IBM BladeCenter blade servers,

IBM System p5 servers, IBM System Storage DS8000 and IBM System Storage N series

devices and an IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller device. The environment also

included the IBM AIX and Microsoft Windows operating systems, VMware vSphere V5.1 software built

on the VMware ESXi hypervisor architecture and SAP AG solutions. The IT environment proved too time-consuming and difficult for the city to manage well. To meet the demands of e-government and accommodate future growth in constituent services delivery requirements, the City of Burnaby needed

to consolidate its infrastructure on a powerful, compact solution that would deliver optimized performance, improved energy efficiency and an intuitive management interface

Page 46: TECHNOLOGIA incontra ARCHITETTURA PureSystems Familytechdata-iframe.ch/ibm_event/Presentations/Pure Family - Walter... · 3 © 2013 IBM Corporation Ease of use, Flexible & Cost optimized

Success Story: City of Burnaby

Solution

The City of Burnaby planned to consolidate and refresh its data center

infrastructure, replacing all its servers and storage devices with a single system over three implementation phases. For phrase one, the client deployed a built-to-order IBM Flex System solution.

Why did IBM Win?

IBM won this business by proactively approaching the government agency

and convincing it that the solution would simplify management

processes. The IBM team explained to the agency that the solution would

allow it to accomplish the refresh of its architecture in stages and

integrate key technologies into the IBM Flex System Enterprise

Chassis in the future. The IBM team also focused on the broad selection

of networking options within the IBM Flex System solution, knowing that the agency had a specific requirement for dedicated 10 Gb and 16 Gb fibre-

channel connections.
