National Innovation Strategy

l A new national strategy was prepared by the Ministry of Employmentand the Economy according to Prime Minister Vanhanen’s CabinetProgramme

l The task was to:- create preconditions for a broad-based innovation policy in theFinnish society (re-conciliate the promotion of innovation activitieswith various policy sectors as a coordinated entity)- ensure global competitiveness of the Finnish innovation ecosystem- promote the creation and introduction of innovations

l The aim was to define the policies and choices that renew and willmake the Finnish innovation ecosystem one of the best in the world in2015

l Was published in June 2008

The Innovation University

l A full merger of three existing universities to Aalto University- Helsinki School of Economics- Helsinki University of Technology- University of Art and Design Helsinki

l The goal for the new university is to be one of the leading institutionsin the world in terms of research and education in its own specialiseddisciplines by 2020

l Operation will start in August 2009l One of the flagship projects in the extensive higher education reform

being implemented by the Ministry of Education, which will increasethe financial and administrative autonomy of the universities
