Rabbi’s Message
We recite the following prayer on Purim and Chanukah:
―We give thanks for the redeeming wonders and mighty
deeds by which, at this season, our people were saved in
days of old.‖ It is called Al Ha-Nisim which thanks God
for the nisim (miracles) by which our people were saved in
days of old. Strangely enough, we recite Al Ha-Nisim on
holidays when God‘s intervention seems to have been
completely absent. Consider Purim. Do you know the
only book in the Hebrew Bible which does not mention God even once? It is
the book of Esther. And what about Chanukah? No sea was parted for the
Macabees and God did not drown the Syrian army. Chanukah was predomi-
nantly a military struggle with defeats and successes, reversals and battles
won.
And yet, on Purim and Chanukah we recite Al Ha-Nisim. Why are the
events of Chanukah and Purim called nisim (miracles) and the redemptive
events of Pesach are not?
Put briefly, for a supernatural God to perform supernatural acts is natu-
ral. That's what it means to be God. Alternatively, a miracle is when human
beings, who have exhausted the limits of their strength and spirit, manage to
sacrifice for an ideal. The nes (miracle) is when we muster the strength and
determination to achieve the seemingly impossible. A miracle happens when
individuals like Esther and Mordechai, or Mattithius and Judah, emerge trium-
phant over attempts of annihilation and they do so with their faith intact.
As a congregation, we will celebrate Purim on Sunday morning, March
20. We will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a few Purim Shpiel songs, Megillah read-
ing, loads of noisemaking, our Purim Carnival and lots of Hamen-
taschen. Dress in a costume...remember this holiday is for everyone! Bring a
few extra ―shekels‖ for the Carnival, tzedakah, and goodies.
In preparation, here are... The Top Ten Reasons To Celebrate Purim:
10. I can make ‗lots‘ of noise and people will be happy about it.
9. Levity is not reserved for the Levites.
8. With a bad hair day you are half way to a good costume!
7. Chanukah, Chanuka, Hanuka, Hanukkah? Purim is easier to spell!
6. Finally, people will appreciate it when I act a little meshugenah.
5. Making a grogger takes much less time than building a sukkah.
4. It is a testament to Jewish patience. Esther won the beauty contest in Shu-
shan and it was only another 2600 years until 1945 when Bess Myerson be-
came the first Jewess to become Miss America.
3. We won, let‘s eat. Mordechai and the Jews - 1, Haman and his lot - 0.
2. No protective goggles needed. No one gets poked in the eye by a lulav.
1. No dieting allowed, eat as many hamentaschen as you like!

Match Grant Sets TINT-ers on Fire. $30K Raised in Under 30 Days!
A message from Rick Brown, President, Temple Israel Ner Tamid:
Mazel Tov - To US!
In December 2010, our congregation was given a challenge. A single, anonymous donor was willing to match, dollar-for
-dollar, contributions up to $30,000 made by the end of January 2011 — effectively totaling $60,000.00. This amount
would be enough to completely retire the debt from the Rebuilding The House campaign.
Well, you did it and then some! By February 1st, the total raised by 87 congregants - nearly 30% of our members - stood
at $31,250. This allowed our extremely generous contributor to add $30,000.00 to the total. Treasurer Steve Newman has
written the final check to the bank eliminating our loan obligation.
Please do remember, if you still owe contributions based on previous Terumah - Rebuilding The House pledges, those
monies are still being collected and are NOT factored into the numbers above. All are welcome to attend the "mortgage
burning celebration" on May 22nd during the Religious School end-of-year picnic.
We could not have done this without a benefactor willing to contribute so significantly to our community. Nor could we
have done it without the contributions of all those named below. Congratulation and thanks to all who contributed.

Kol tuv v‘shalom,
Noah Wren
Noah is a seventh grader at
Solon Middle School. His favor-
ite subjects are Social Studies
and Science. Noah loves to play
baseball and soccer. He is an
utility player which means he has
the skills to play anywhere, in
baseball and in soccer. Baseball
season starts right after the Bar
Mitzvah... that‘s great timing.
Why become a Bar Mitvah?
Noah answered, ―it‘s a tradition
in my family and I
want to keep it
going.‖
Mazel Tov to
Noach, his parents
Amy and Bob, his
brother Trevor, his
grandparents Susie
and Jerry Strom, and the rest of
his extended family. He will be
called to the Torah, Friday April
1, 2011. Everyone is invited to
come and share this simcha with
his family.
Joshua Levy
Josh is a seventh grader at
LaMuth Middle School in Paines-
ville Township. His favorite sub-
jects are math and
science… lunch
too. He plays sax-
ophone in the
school band. For
the past two years,
he has played
Hatikvah with his
classmates, at the
conclusion of religious school
each week.
Joshua is looking forward to
reading from the Torah and shar-
ing this joyous occasion with
family and friends.
Mazel Tov to Yehoshua and
his parents, Ann and Jordan, and
his brothers Noah and Zacha-
ry. The congregation is invited to
join the celebration at services,
Friday, April 29, 2011.
Congratulations to our Newest B’nai Mitzvah!
Jan Tucker
Jan is a longtime teacher in
our religious school. She is ap-
proaching a milestone 60th birth-
day and wanted to mark it by be-
coming an adult Bat
Mitzvah.
―I wanted to do
something meaning-
ful and I wanted to
be an example for
my students. It is a
great way to keep up my He-
brew. And it is an honor to read
from the Torah. The rabbi and I
have had many discussions on the
Torah portion and I have learned
a lot through the months.‖
Everyone is invited to come
and celebrate with Jan as she be-
comes an adult Bat Mitzvah on
Friday, March 4, 2011. Mazel

Special Deliveries: How 200 PB&J Sandwiches
Get from TINT to the Hungry Every Friday Night
By Allan Miner
Did you know that in addition to our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, TINT volunteers hand out food donated by
Panera’s and Chick-Fil-A. Here is a typical Friday night route:
After the sandwiches are made every Friday after services, we have two Panera‘s Bread pick-ups to make: one at Har-
vard Park and one at Wilson Mills. This requires two people in separate cars to split this task. Normally, Peter Freimark
will get the Harvard Park donation and take this with some PB&J boxes separately to The Edward Keating Center on W.
117th Street and Carbon Avenue.
If Peter isn‘t around, then TJ Summers goes to Harvard Park, we meet at the Wilson Mills Panera‘s to consolidate the
donations and boxes of PB&J for the trip downtown for street distribution. We take the Shoreway to the W. 28th St. exit
where we begin to distributive to the people on the street. In the winter, we are providing coats and blankets to anyone
who is in need. In all seasons we hand out bottles of water.
We start on West 25th at St. Malachi Center, where there are usually around 5-7 people around the buildings. We then
take the Detroit/Superior Bridge to W. 9th where there is a regular recipient wrapped in plastic in a corner doorway; there
we drop off sandwiches and water. Next, we make our way around
Public Square, where there are usually 5-7 people waiting. We polite-
ly ask them if they need a sandwich; water is often requested here.
The Old Stone Church usually has a person on the steps that regularly
accepts sandwiches and water. We scan this area thoroughly. We then
go to the area around St. Clair and E. 9th St where there are 3-4 people
in a recessed doorway. Just around the corner there is usually some
one, but not always the same person, on the grating. We travel E. 12th
Street looking under the benches installed there and in the bus shel-
ters. We run by the Greyhound station and the adjacent parking lot
and provide sandwiches to all who want them. We go to the Bishop T
Cosgrove building where there are usually people camped out on the
sidewalk or wrapped in blankets in the bus shelter. On E. 30th St and
Payne Avenue, we drop off some of the Panera‘s and sandwiches, at
the Norma Herr Women‘s Center. If we have the energy, we go down
Superior to E. 40th and then back up toward E 20th Street on St. Clair.
Men are allowed in the shelter at 4:00 pm but we find them in the surrounding areas around Lakeside Avenue where
people congregate, sleeping on pallets and sitting on the sidewalks and steps of various buildings. They are grateful for
the sandwiches and water. We drop off whatever we have left at the Lutheran Ministries Men‘s Shelter at 2100 Lakeside
Avenue. They get breakfast before they leave in the morning.
We also take donations from Panera‘s and/or Chick-Fil-A to the Casa Alma Center at 3387 Fulton Avenue run by a west
side Hispanic non-profit group known as UMADOT.
This route starts at around 10:20pm (we have to wait for Panera‘s to close) and we get back to the Temple parking lot at
around 12:30 every Friday. The regulars who always are performing this Tzedakah are: Peter Freimark, TJ Summers,

Chaim Yankel, the fattest man in Chelm went to see his doctor for a check up. Dr. Epstein told Chaim Yankel that he needed to lose weight immediately, and the best way to do it would be for him to start running seven miles a day.
Chaim Yankel followed Dr. Epstein’s advice, and it seemed to be working. After only 40 days he had lost over 30 pounds. Chaim Yankel phoned Dr. Epstein and thanked him very much for the excellent advice. But at the end of the conversation,
Chaim Yankel said, “Doctor, I just have one more question. How do I get home, now that I am 280 miles away from home?"

Special Shabbat Speaker on Jewish Medical Ethics:
Rights vs. Responsibilities Join us on Friday, May 6th as Dr. Eric Kodish, husband of Hebrew teacher Perach Kodish, brings
his expertise in the field of Jewish Bioethics to Temple Israel Ner Tamid.
Currently the F.J. O‘Neill Professor and Chairman of the Department of Bioethics at the Cleveland
Clinic Foundation, Dr. Kodish is the editor of Ethics and Research with Children: A Cased-Based Approach, and has
significant research experience with pediatric leukemia trials and oncology. He is also Executive Director of the Cleve-
land Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics, and Professor of Pediatrics at the Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western
Reserve University.
Because of this unique opportunity to hear Dr. Kodish, the evening will have a different format. We will do a slightly
abbreviated Shabbat Service, then go on to the Pot Luck Oneg for Kiddish and Motzi. Shortly thereafter, those who are
interested can return to the Sanctuary for Dr. Kodish's talk, followed by Q & A. Others will be free to stay in the Stark
Family Social Hall to make PB&J sandwiches and schmooze.

Here are the four sons of the Seder.
Their names are: Shlomo, David, Yitzchak and Moshe.
But who is who? Here are a few hints:
1. Yitzchak forgot to bring his Haggadah for the Seder.
2. David is next to the boy who is not wearing either a jacket or
a tie.
3. Moshe is next to Shlomo.
4. Shlomo doesn‘t have a Haggadah and is not wearing his new
black shoes.
Write the name of each boy on the line under his picture.
Answers (left to right): Yitzchak, David, Shlomo, Moshe
