Hahndor f Primar y School and Preschool

Term 1 Week 3 14th February 2019

Hahndorf encourages every child to take up the Premier’s Reading Challenge – to read 12 books by September 6th. Easy if you’re reading books you enjoy!

8 of these books are to be from the Challenge booklists, available on the PRC website, and 4 of similar standard can be of their own choice.

For Reception/year 1 students, include books read and enjoyed together.

Books in our Library that are on the list are marked with coloured sticky dots: Red = R-2 Blue = year 3-5 Green = year 6-7 Or search the PRC website: www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au

And see the staff in the Resource Centre if you need any help.… We love to match students with a book that they really enjoy. And we love to see everyone rewarded for their efforts with a certificate or medal later in the year, no-one missing out.

Please ensure they fill in their student reading records as they read their books, get them signed off as they go and make sure your child hands it in to their teacher or Lindy as soon as they finish.

Your child can also Rate a Read, reviewing the books that they are reading and send this in to us on the website. They award 1 winner every month with a book prize and their first name and school are entered on our website. Also, they have a student blog section for posting and sharing thoughts about the Challenge and books that they are reading – encourage your children to have a go!

From the OSHC Hive….

Important information As our service has a limited amount of licenced places, we have been experiencing sessions e.g. Tuesday and Thursday ASC and some very high BSC sessions too, where we have reached capacity. Under Federal Law for CCS entitlements, we operate with a “Priority of Access” which the 3 main Priorities are: Priority 1: a child at risk of serious abuse or neglect Priority 2: a child of a single parent or parents who satisfy the work/training/study test under Section 14 of the 'A New Tax System (Family Assistance) Act 1999' Priority 3: any other child. In order to secure your child’s placement or access to OSHC, it is important to book permanently if possible. If you have a pre-school child or siblings that you think may need to access OSHC in the future, please contact the Director to record your interest. This information will help us shape our service for the future. Children need to bring a hat to OSHC in the first and last term of the year. Vacation Care fees are due for settlement next week, if you are experiencing difficulty paying them please contact Sheryle or Helen to discuss a payment plan.

Resource Centre Borrowing times

The Resource Centre is open before and after school every day.

Times – 8.30 – 8.55 am and 3.15 – 3.30 pm

We love to see parents at these times, so come in and browse with your children. Classes generally have a regular borrowing time each week and students can also borrow during the first lesson and at first lunch every day.

If you would like a parent borrowing card, please ask Joy, Mandy or Lindy (handy if you have younger siblings who like to read too). As well as borrowing books to read with your child, we have a small collection of parent titles available too.

Book Sale We have a selection of old books which have been weeded from our collection, which will be available for sale very cheaply. We do our best to support students to choose wisely.

Date: Wednesday 27th February (week 5) Times: Before school, from 8.30am until the bell At first lunch (11.30am) Where: the Library Prices: from 5 cents to 50 cents

RECYCLING 2019

Welcome to everyone from the Recycling Team.

Due to changes made to this year’s format, please be advised that 10 cent recyclable containers will now be collected on Fridays from classrooms.

Room 5 students will be assisting Niecy with the recycling.

The School Garden

Over the last 2 weeks, Room 4 team has been very busy in the garden. We picked basil, mint, heaps of tomatoes, cucumber, snow peas, carrots and zucchinis. We made a salad for our team for healthy snack. We looked around and found special things to take photos of. We spotted aphids and one caterpillar. We did lots and lots of weeding – which went in the compost with a sign that says “Fill this bin first”. We planted new seedlings - beetroot, basil, spring onion and capsicum. We watered them. Mandy and Kylie helped us plant things. We were really busy!

IMPORTANT DATES

Tuesday 5th

March Child Health Checks

Saturday 23rd

March Mt Barker Show We have been very excited to start our Kindy year with 43 children. We also warmly welcome Ruth Galpin to our Staff Team. Ruth is teaching the Red Group on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Jenni is teaching the Blue Group on Thursdays and Fridays. Both groups have a 4 hour session on alternate Wednesdays.

We are focussing on “Belonging”. Children have been settling into routines and getting to know each other and us! We have made ‘mini-mes’ and will display them in our room for the year. Children will get to take them home when they graduate! Heights have been measured and self portraits have been drawn and painted. We have all visited the Library to borrow a book and used our newly painted Library Bags.

Playgroup has begun again on Wednesday mornings from 9am to 10.30. It has been great to see some old faces but also some new ones!! Parents are required to sign in at the School Office and each visit costs $4 per family. Please come and join us each week for play, songs and a story.

Child Health Checks will be held at Preschool on March 5

th, for children who

have turned 4 years old. Nurse Kate will be visiting and will discuss your child’s growth and development, immunisation status, and will assess vision, hearing, height, weight and oral health.

Please make a

booking on the form on the

Preschool sign-in shelf.
