Term 2 Week 2 Friday, 10 May 2019
I hope everyone had a great Easter and holiday! It has been a fabulous start to Term 2 with many classroom, extra-curricular and community events. I am looking forward to an amazing Term 2 with many more exciting things to come. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families who have joined the Wattle Grove PS community this term.
School Fair – A huge success! What a great day was had by all at the Wattle Grove Public School Fair. Thousands of people flocked to WGPS on Sunday to join in the fun! With a huge variety of stalls, rides, displays and food, there was something for everyone to enjoy. A huge thank you to the Wattle Grove P&C FAIR Committee for their organisation of this fabulous event. A big shout out also goes to all the parent and teacher volunteers for helping on the day! Many, many hours went into making this event such a big success and we are very grateful to have such a hardworking and dedicated community supporting our school.
Making Mother’s Day Special This week the students were provided with the opportunity to shop for a Mother’s day present for their mum, aunt, grandma or friend. The P&C arranged a variety of special gifts for the students to purchase. Thank you to the the P&C Fundraising committee for their organisation and the many parent helpers who supported the stall on Tuesday. The students had lots of fun selecting their gifts.
A Special Bilby is Given a Special Name Congratulations to 1 Sapphire who have won the ‘Name the Baby Bilby Competition’ at Wildlife Sydney Zoo, Darling Harbour. The winning name was ‘Sapphire.’ This name was chosen because of the link between the class name and bilbies. Sapphires and

bilbies are both precious. Sapphires are found under the ground and bilbies dig under the ground. In recognition of their winning name, the students in 1 Sapphire will receive a gift bag from the zoo.
Super Kid Morning Tea I absolutely love attending the Super Kid Morning Teas. This week I had morning tea with the Stage 2 and 3 Super Kids for the month of April. Congratulations to all of those students!

We would also like to congratulate our dancers on their fantastic performance at the Wattle Grove Fair. Thank you to our parents and carers for their ongoing support.
School Ambassador Program – Problem Solving at its Best Congratulations to Mikaylah who has been selected to represent Wattle Grove Public School in the School Ambassador Program. Mikaylah will work with a small group of students from different schools in the Liverpool area on a ‘Problem of Practice.’ On Wednesday she participated in a leadership day where the students listened to a variety of speakers. Mikaylah’s group is focussing on increasing the physical activity of students during break times. The group already has many ideas and will work through the year to develop these. Thank you to Mr Wilson who will be leading and supporting this program. Stay tuned for updates throughout the year!
School and Community Charter – Supporting Schools and Communities to Work Together NSW Public Schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for. The best education happens when students, parents and schools work together.
The NSW Department of Education has introduced a School Community Charter for all members of NSW Public School communities. It has been developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders.
The School Community Charter outlines the
responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and
school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our
learning environments are collaborative, supportive
and cohesive.
A copy of the charter follows this edition of the
newsletter.

Open Day-Kindergarten 2020 Our school will host an information and orientation ‘Open Day’ for parents of pre-school students who intend enrolling their children at our school in 2020. We look forward to welcoming new families to our school on Thursday 23 May and showcasing the wonderful programs we offer at Wattle Grove PS. Thank you to Miss Premier and Mrs Steen for all their hard work in organising the day and special thanks to staff members who are assisting.
Wattle Wanderers I had the opportunity to teach 5/6 Tuscany this week. I had a great time with the students during an afternoon mathematics lesson. The students were learning about median, mode, mean and range. They participated in a number of challenges where they had to work on these concepts. The students show great knowledge, skills and perseverance throughout the lesson. Well done 5/6 Tuscany!
NAPLAN NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy which are important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their
literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
Between 14 – 24 May (see dates below), our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format.
If you have any questions please see your child’s teacher.

We’re Taking It in Our Stride On Friday 17 MAY 2019 Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t
Page 4
realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: • Walking with them the whole way to school • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Earn & Learn Program Woolworths has just launched their Earn & Learn program, and this year we're joining in. For those parents who aren't aware of the program, if you shop at Woolworths between 1st of May and the 25th of June, you can earn stickers. Our school will be collecting those stickers which we can then swap for new school equipment; things like art and craft supplies, sports gear, teaching aids and much more. There are thousands of things we can choose from.
So for any parents who shop at Woolworths, please collect the stickers and drop them in to our collection box, which is located outside the front office door.
Thanks for helping us out!

Congratulations ! Eli represented WGPS today at the NSW PSSA State Swimming Titles. He swam in the 8year boy’s 50metre freestyle (Race 4, Heat 4, Lane 9)! He came 38th out of 39 kids doing it in 47.53 secs. What an amazing opportunity for him
to participate in such a professional event at just 8 years old. Swimming where Olympians swim, getting his name up on the board, and in an official program.
Congratulations to Jaxson in 5 Amethyst who was successful in being selected for a representative soccer team which will tour England this year. We wish him all the best!
Congratulations to one of our students in her successful audition for the Billy Elliott Musical! Sienna M well done!

ANZAC Day Commemorative Service On the last day of term 1 we paid our respects to our current and former serving members of the Australian Defence Force and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you to the School of Military Engineering for providing the Catafalque Party, WO2 Pitstock for the ANZAC address, our student leaders for their readings and WGPS School Choir for their performance. The school community also had the opportunity to view an ANZAC display from a local collector, Mr Cheers. Thank you to our community who joined us for this special event.
