A TERM 3 WEEK 3 7 AUGUST 2020 Dear Parents and Caregivers Term 3 has been busy with the school Cross Country events being completed. It was fantastic to see all students participating in this great event with students doing their best to complete the course. There were some very close finishes with many parents and fellow students cheering the runners on as they crossed the finish line. I am sure our cross country team will make a big impression at the Interschool Cross Country event next week. Thank you to Mr Morrison for coordinating this exciting event and to all the parents and staff who came along to support the runners and assist as course supervisors. The senior school Japanese Assembly held on Tuesday was an exciting event with students dressed in Japanese attire and participating in a number of activities including a group song. Thank you to Pitcher Sensei, Mr Vuckovic, Mr Kendrew and the students from Rooms 19 and 20 for a great performance. Upcoming School Development Day – 21 st August 2020 Don’t forget that there is an additional School Development Day this term, where staff will be engaging in Professional Learning regarding school priorities. Students will not attend on this day. 4 Square Courts Parents and students coming onto the school grounds may have noticed there have been a number of 4 square courts appearing in the quadrangle area. These 4 square courts were the concept of Year 6 student, Breeahn from Room 19. Breeahn produced an outstanding ‘4 Square Court Report’ where she outlined the reasons for additional 4 square courts and proposed their position and the required dimensions. Our extremely talented gardener Mr Des Morgan has been systematically measuring and marking out the new courts which have already been put to good use. Breeahn intends to organise a 4 square tournament in the near future. Thank you Breeahn for a great concept and ensuring your fellow students can participate in more 4 square games. Before, Lunchtime and Afterschool programs At Lathlain Primary School many of our students participate in programs which are provided by our teaching staff. Before school we have Running Club, at lunchtimes, Lego, Scrabble and Touch Typing Clubs and after school STEM and Chess Clubs. These groups provide fantastic opportunities for our students. I would like to thank the staff members who give extra time to ensure these programs continue. Support A Reader Mrs Holle is currently working on developing a ‘Support A Reader’ workshop which will be presented to parents later this term. This will support parents in understanding the skills needed by children to read successfully and how they can support their own child with reading. We also intend to ask for some volunteers to work with Mrs Holle and support students using this program in the school. COVID-19 Update The Department of Education has released an update about COVID-19 to all schools. The full report can be found on the school website, however, the main points include maintaining vigilance with personal hygiene practices by using hand sanitizers and coughing and sneezing into the elbow. A significant point in the document is the maintaining of physical distancing. Our community has been very supportive of this regulation with parents and caregivers coming onto the school grounds and adhering to the 1.5m required distance. It is imperative our vigilance remains for upcoming events such as Interschool Cross Country, Faction and Interschool Athletics Carnivals and the EduDance Concert. Thank you for your support with this very important matter.

Annual Report The 2019 Annual School Report is available on the school website. The Annual Report outlines Lathlain Primary School’s:

• Vision and values

• School Improvement Plan

• Priority areas

• School Community information

• 2019 NAPLAN data results

• Attendance data and

• 2020 priority areas.

To access the report, go to the School website and under the ‘Our School’ dropdown menu, select Publications and Policies. You can also download the report by selecting on this link.

Please stay healthy and safe.

Kind regards Ian Bersan A/Principal

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

The process to appoint our next Principal is underway!

The application period for Lathlain’s next School Principal recently closed and the rigorous process of evaluating submissions, shortlisting, and conducting interviews has begun this week.

The South Metropolitan Education office is coordinating the process with a selection panel comprising Sue Cuneo (Regional Executive Director), Hayden O’Mara (Principal of Manning Primary School) and myself as the Community Representative. Confirmation of the successful applicant should be finalised by the end of August subject to approval by the Director General (a requirement for Independent Public Schools).

On a separate note, the School Council’s attention will soon turn to the next steps in our school improvement journey as we transition to being an Independent Public School. The newfound possibilities to improve education outcomes for Lathlain students is very exciting indeed!!!

CROSS COUNTRY

The Year 3-6 school Cross Country took place on Thursday, 30th July. We were blessed by the weather gods and had sunshine throughout the morning.

First off the ranks were the Year 6 girls. The girls who completed and participated in the race should be very proud of their efforts. They were then followed shortly after by the Year 6 boys. This was an extremely tight race throughout; the top 2 places came down to a sprint at the end.

The Year 5 Girls and Boys were next with an impressive number of students participating and running to the best of their ability. Both races were very exciting to watch.

The Year 4 Girls and Boys followed with two very impressive races and most importantly, a large number of students participating.

Last were the Year 3’s, with the first to race the Year 3 girls. It was great to see the determination and persistence shown by all the girls, even though they were clearly quite exhausted. The Year 3 boys went off with a bang, all very eager to showcase their long distance running capabilities. The race eventually spread out a bit, but some very fast times were logged and the sportsmanship and encouragement was great to see.

Well done to everyone who participated and ran on the day.

I would like to thank the Year 3 – 6 teachers for their work on the day. I would also like to give a special mention to the Year 6 students for their help in setting up and packing up the event. Lastly I would like to thank the parent helpers and parents/carers who came down and showed their support; this is always greatly appreciated.

Callum Morrison.

P&C NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

We had a great turn out at our meeting on Wednesday night and welcomed along some new members. I have provided a brief summary of what your P&C is up to below.

Our Secretary Brian Tombleson resigned from the role at the beginning of term and we elected a new Secretary at the meeting. Thank you to Executive Committee member David Crabbe for saying yes to the nomination and taking on the Secretarial role for the rest of the term.

SAVE THE DATE for upcoming Term 3 events Our Events and Fundraising Committee has been busy planning some fantastic events for our families. So put these dates in your diaries...

Family Bike Scavenger Hunt - Sunday 13 September 9am -1pm

Come out and take your friends and family for an adventurous day through our suburb! Explore everything around, cruising the road and most importantly, will you be able to crack the ultimate code of the day?

1920s Razzle & Dazzle Food and Wine Event at Laika - Saturday 19 September 7pm - 10pm

A parents’ night out where you can dress in your best 1920s and all that jazz, with live entertainment, wine tasting, dancing, good food and drink. More information will follow shortly.

Fathering Project: Dads’ Lawn Bowls - Thursday 20 August 7pm

The Fathering Project's Term 3 event is here! Join other dads and father figures for bowls and beer at the Victoria Park and Carlisle Bowls Club. RSVP to Cirsten on 0433 347 625. Do not forget to join the Facebook group to connect with other dads at Lathlain Primary. Search Lathlain Association for Dads (LADS) on Facebook.

P&C contribution to permanent shade structure for senior playground

Lathlain Primary was successful in receiving a $20,000 grant towards a permanent shade structure for the senior playground. The outdoor play equipment needs SunSmart cover and the trees that previously provided shade were destroyed in the March storms. The grant does not cover the whole cost of the roof structure and the school requested a contribution of up to $5000 from the P&C to help fund this project. We have been able to do this by redistributing unspent and uncommitted funds allocated for 2020 due to the disruption from COVID-19, as well as by using some of the P&C contingency funding for 2020.

Handball court markings - request from Year 6 student One of our Year 6 students put together a proposal for the P&C about new handball court markings on the basketball courts, to accommodate the large number of students who play handball. Our wonderful Gardener Des Morgan has been marking these courts this week. It is fantastic to have students come to the P&C with their ideas.

Your Move - team of parents on board

We have created a Your Move team of interested parents who met with a representative from Your Move to discuss the best way the school can get the most out of the Your Move program. We accumulated a large number of points with our Walk to School event earlier last term that will contribute to prizes such as bike racks and bike education lessons. We missed the timeline to apply for the Restart Vic Park grant in June for bike education for students, however, the Your Move program has just opened a round of grants that we will apply for instead. The Your Move team's next step is creating a Your Move survey, one for students and another for parents, about how families travel to and from school. We will also include in the survey questions for parents about traffic management around the school.

Resignation of Secretary Brian Tombleson

Sadly, Brian Tombleson has had to step down as our P&C Secretary. Brian has been instrumental in setting up our G:Suite storage drive, our IT processes, templates and documentation, the website and much, much more behind the scenes. He and I joined the P&C together 5 years ago and, before taking on the role of Secretary this year, he was a driving force on the Events and Fundraising Committee and, more recently, the Executive Committee. He has done an amazing job in all the roles he has taken on and we thank him for all he has done for the P&C.

If you have any questions about anything P&C please get in touch. Email me at [email protected]

This term in Room 2 we have been exploring different

types of poems. We have learnt about acrostic poems

and similes. Each student created an acrostic poem

using the letters in their name.

In Geography we have been learning about continents

and oceans. We had to research where in the world

the oceans were located and map them on a world map.
