[1] Kia ora Parents, Whanau, and Caregivers, The term is well and truly gathering momentum now and we have had so much going on in the school from Flippa Ball practices in the pool, non-stop class swimming lessons, Sport BoP delivering the “Hit It” programme to develop hand eye sport skills, media crew out and about reporting, and on top of all this our tamariki are engaged in their classroom learning programmes! Lot’s going on to keep our children stimulated and growing. This week at the Kickstart parent meeting I shared with parents the importance of working together in partnership as home and school to ensure our children fly in their lives and learning at school. The key to this is effective communication. We have several ways you can do this whether by phone, email, or simply the old fashioned and reliable “face to face” before or aer school. It is important that if you have any concerns at all to talk to your child’s teacher promptly as a problem shared is a problem halved. Sometimes solutions are simply checking perceptions on a matter of clarifying some information. Remember that teachers are just people too and love to hear about the good things that are happening, or sometimes a simple word of encouragement ;) Also, a huge thanks to the Welcome Bay Baptist who presented me with a cheque this week to support resourcing our school Breakfast Club provision. We really appreciate your support. Naku noa ra, Nik House - Principal Newsletter # 3 Wednesday 21st February, 2012 School Roll 281 Reporting to Parents As a school we are currently reviewing our reporting to parents processes including portfolios and written reports. This is a rather mammoth task and one that we want to ensure meets the needs of our tamariki, whanau, and community, and provides a clear picture regarding progress and achievement . We are trying hard to minimise “teacher talk” and report in plain language so that you as parents and whanau understand exactly where your child is at academically, culturally, and socially. Part of this process will be looking at refining any information we double up on between the written report and what is included in the portfolio. As a first step toward changing some of our processes we will be having a meet the team and teacher evening on Tuesday 12th March from 5:30pm. This will provide an opportunity for you to: - briefly meet and learn about the team of teachers your child learns with every day - gain an overview of the school vision and learning for the year ahead - hear a little bit about learning expectations as they relate to your child’s achievement - check out the learning environments - meet other families Junior, Middle, and Senior meetings will all go for approximately 20 minutes each and will be staggered so that if you have children in different parts of the school you can attend each hui. More details regarding time will be released closer to the date. We would also encourage you to bring along a picnic to have for dinner at school aer you have finished meeting in the classroom. This will be a great time to share together as a community and maybe make a few new friends ;)

Sports NewsKia ora. As you may remember from a few weeks ago, I am Mr Kyle Page and I have just started teaching at Welcome Bay School this year.I have previously been a teacher and team leader at Otumoetai Intermediate. One of my new roles at Welcome Bay School includes the responsibility of Sports Coordinator. I am passionate about sport and am keen to see sports as an area of excellence at our school.

One of the keys to successful sport at school is having the support of parents and whanau. In order for our tamariki to thrive on the sports field they need to have coaching and also need to be at games on time, each week, ready to give 100% and this is where your support and commitment is so important. If you have any queries or can offer your time, skills, knowledge, support in any way please do not hesitate to contact me via email:

[email protected] are some up and coming activities that are available for our children. Have a look and see if any may interest your child. Also check the notice board for sports info outside Tawa.

Kia KahaKia Kaha is a school-based programme that aims to help schools create environments where all members of the community feel safe, respected and valued, and where bullying cannot flourish.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is deliberate, hurtful behaviour that is usually repeated over a period of time. It happens when one person tries to use power inappropriately over others.

Some ways children are bullied includes: name calling, saying or writing nasty things about them, leaving them out of activities or not talking to them, threatening them, or making them feel uncomfortable or scared, stealing or damaging things, hitting or kicking, or making them do things they don’t want to do.

Bullying is harmful because it can stop children and young people from leading a normal and happy life. They may feel lonely, unhappy, frightened, unsafe and feel that the bullying is their fault.

Kia Kaha promotes a whole-school approach to reduce bullying.

VolleyballWe had our first games of this season at TECT arena on Friday night. The Year 5/6 team, Welcome Bay Hotshots played Pyes Pa Strikers and lost 41 to 56. Cayla Warner was player of the day.The Year 3/4 team, Welcome Bay Boomers played Omanu Tuis in a very close game and lost 53 to 58. Player of the day was O'Sharn Tomai- Kopell. The final game of the night was Yr 3/4 WB Allstars playing Te Akau ki Papamoa Diggers who had a big win with 60 to 23. Player of the day was first time player Fiona Razak- Begg.

Flippa BallWelcome Bay Bombers, our Year 4/5 Flippaball team had their first game on Tuesday. It was a grading game against a very experienced Year 6 team from Pillans Point. Their experience showed and we lost 8-0. Half our players were playing their first ever game and it was our first time in the deep Year 5/6 pools. A great effort from all the team and especially from Player of the Day, Quinn Jones who played a great second half in goal. He worked really hard especially being unable to touch the bottom of the pool. Kia Maia

SwimmingWe are lucky to have a great school pool and we aim to provide quality, daily learn to swim programmes for our children. This is an important life skill and all children are expected to swim as part of the curriculum programme. Please ensure that your child/ren have togs and towel with them each day and are prepared for swimming. If children are unable to participate they will need to have a note from home, or an email to the teacher.
