Principal’s Report

Welcome Back! I’d like to particularly welcome our new students and families– you’ve chosen a great school and we really look forward to working with you!

Parent-Teacher Interviews It was lovely to see so many families at our parent-teacher interviews. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s Year Advisor if you weren’t able to come and they will organise an alternative way for you to find out about your child’s progress.

Good Luck Year 12 Good luck to our Year 12 students who are currently very busy with Trials, HSC major works and HSC practical exams. We know this can be a stressful time so please encourage your child to seek support from our senior mentor, HT Wellbeing orYear Advisor if they need it. Any staff member that your child feels comfortable with can steer them towards appropriate support.

Change in Roles and Welcome Mr Kenny! As you are aware there have been some changes in roles across the college and campus. You will already know about some of them – but if you’re anything like me it’s always useful to have information summarised again.

Ms Narelle Small (continuing), Ms Karah Logan and Ms Elizabeth Golsby Deputy Principals

Mrs Mel McFarland relieving HT Wellbeing

Ms Ash Hardes relieving HT Support

And a big welcome to Mr Nathan Kenny who comes to us from Bathurst High Campus and will be

relieving as HT Integration for the next 12 months. Mr Kenny is a passionate and enthusiastic teacher

and we are very excited to have him join our team!

Enrolment Policy The NSW Department of Education has made some changes to their enrolment policy. This mainly affects schools who are full and not able to take enrolments from students out of zone. Currently we do still have room for out of zone enrolments, however, this may change in the future. Any out of zone enrolments will still need to make an out of zone application. For more detailed information about this please contact the school.

Celebrations and Achievements! I’m really loving my new role as Campus Principal – one of my main challenges is that I’m finding it hard to keep up with all the good news stories and amazing achievements and opportunities of the campus! What a terrible position to be in! So I apologise in advance if now or in the future I fall short of acknowledging and celebrating all the wonderful stories from the school.

Well done to the students below and to all our students who have represented our school so well in various competitions or who are just trying their best every day at school!

TJ Henderson achieved top 1% of the state in the National Geography Competition

College Principal’s Report

It has been a hectic, though enjoyable start to my role as relieving College Principal. I am very much enjoying working with a fantastic college team Ms Hertel, Mr Feening, Ms Howarth (based at KHC) and Ms Saini, Ms Orpwood (based at BHC) and Ms Farmer. It is also great to work with the senior executive and executive leadership teams at both campuses. I am working out of both campuses, with an office at both Kelso and Bathurst High campuses.

Kids Teaching Kids: Over the past few weeks students in the Year 7 “Barton class” have been working with students from Bathurst High Campus through the Kids Teaching Kids program, which aims to use local environmental and sustainability issues as a theme and focus for learning. This has been most worthwhile and the students have been fantastic.

Future Directions Interviews. Students in Year 10 have now been interviewed about their subjects, and over the coming weeks, that information will be used to determine the line pattern for Year 11 subjects for 2020. Prior to the interviews, students complete surveys about their career goals, which along with subject results and NAPLAN data were used to help guide students in choosing their pattern of study. This information will be available by the end of Term 3, or early Term 4.

Future Pathways: A similar structure will be used in the coming weeks for the Year 9, 2020 subject choices, which is called Future Pathways

Industry Experience: There are some really exciting developments in the college Industry Experience program, where students work one day per week for 5 weeks, to gain a first-hand experience of work. The program was successfully trialled at Kelso High Campus in 2018, through Scott Farmer Bricklaying and Landscape Designs with Matthew Chapman. Recently the college entered into an arrangement with Simplot and over the next few weeks, we are looking at expanding this program into more areas. If any business owners are interested in being involved, please contact Louise Farmer at the Kelso High Campus office.

Department of Education Enrolment Policy: As Ms Scott has mentioned, the Department has a new enrolment policy. New procedures have been developed for non-local enrolment applications for Kelso High Campus. All non-local enrolments will be reviewed by the campus enrolment panel, which consists of teacher and parent representatives, Community Liaison Officer, Louise Farmer and myself.

The following criteria will be used to assess all non-local enrolment applications:

siblings already enrolled at the campus

proximity and access to the campus

medical reasons

safety and supervision of the student before and after school

availability of subjects or combinations of subjects

compassionate circumstances

Please call me at Kelso High Campus if you wish to discuss anything related to the college.

Mick Sloan Principal Denison College (Relieving)

Debating

Year 7 and 8 debaters have been extremely busy. In Week 2, both Teams A and B debated against Bathurst High Campusl on topics to do with education.

Team A unfortunately lost their first debate but Team B were victorious.

Last week, Team B travelled to Canobolas High School to debate on a media related topic. They showed huge improvement but were beaten on the day.

Our Year 7 and 8 Debating Team A won their debate against Orange on Wednesday.

Well done!

Future Moves at CSU

Our Year 9 students were given the opportunity to get hands-on at the CSU Bathurst Campus. They chose from paramedicine, teaching, engineering, theatre media, TV live production/journalism and exercise science.

All students had an amazing experience at each of their chosen workshops and were given campus tours and a Q&A session with their CSU leaders. They were all enthusiastic throughout the day and a credit to our school.

Future Moves

Year 7 & 8 took part in the Future Moves program hosted by CSU. They took part in hands-on workshops giving them the opportunity to consider their future careers pathways and choices.

Year 7 had an engineering task of building towers that were either tall or strong and weight bearing.

Year 8 investigated the reality of careers, wages and paying bills using a lifestyle board game. All students were very engaged with the sessions and asked lots of questions.

Thank you to CSU for supporting our students.

ANZAC Memorial Centenary Project

Recently, ex Kelso High student Shannon Slattery, visited Year 12 Visual Arts to discuss her involvement in the ANZAC Memorial Centenary Project.

Shannon who works for Spatial Services based in Bathurst, was seconded to the Geographical Names Board for 15 months to work alongside installation artist Fiona Hall and Veteran's Affairs, to aid in the creation of Hall's vision for the project.

Soil from 1701 locations around NSW was collected to represent the soldiers who enlisted in WWI. Locations ranged from cities and suburbs to town and hamlets. Often soil samples were taken from addresses that soldiers provided.

We really appreciated Shannon's visit and her providing information about the installation, as this worked in well with the students' Art of War Case Study.

Dubbo Wether Challenge

Kelso High Ag students will test their skills against 40 other schools across the state later this month when they travel to Dubbo as part of the School Wether Challenge.

Earlier this year, the Ag students received seven merinos from Egelabra Stud, which they have cared for over the past three months.

During that time, the students have not only had to care for the animals, they have been able to study the merino industry up close, look at the wool and learn about the breed.

Results of the First Creative Writing Competition

The English Faculty had some amazing entries in the 7-10 fortnightly writing competition. Students were asked to respond to the topic 'Area 51' in 250 characters or less.

The winner of this topic was Year 7 student Issabella West. For her efforts Issabella has won a book voucher to Books Plus and had the opportunity to share her writing with her peers at the whole school assembly.

Congratulations to Issabella and the students who entered!

For the next topic, students will need to get creative with their 250 characters and respond to the topic ‘Wintr’.

Good luck!

Fabric Request

In the Year 8 Tech1 class with our teacher Miss Allitt, we have been practising and developing our fine motor skills by using recycled fabric so less of it gets thrown away. We use the fabrics to do a process called plaiting which helps us develop better fine motor skills because we are moving our fingers constantly.

After that, the process makes a rope out of the fabric. We then experimented with it. The fabric was either turned into a spiral or woven with more fabric to create a fabric board - both looked very nice.

If there is any unwanted clothing such as tracksuit pants, jumpers, blankets and shirts, we would very much appreciate it if you would donate any of that sort of clothing to us. If you do have any, please make sure it is clean and drop it off at the front office so we can keep on plaiting and creating awesome new things.

Disney’s High School Musical

Kelso High Campus CAPA Department is pleased to announce that the 2019/20 school production will be Disney's High School Musical.

On New Year's Eve, high school juniors Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez meet at a party while both teens are at a ski lodge during winter break. At the party, the two are called upon to sing karaoke together ("Start of Something New"). They find that they have a connection and decide to exchange numbers before going their separate ways.

If you want to know what happens next, come and sign up for the musical! Auditions will take place in Week 6. Prepare a song, a monologue and a dance...and be AWESOME!!

German Wheel Workshop

On Wednesday, Cirkus Surreal students had the opportunity to work with Wolfgang Bien and Abby Duruz at a German Wheel and Cyr Wheel workshop.

Wolfgang, who has many accomplishments to his name, including Head Coach of the USA Wheel Gymnastics Team, holder of many World Championship titles, Cirque du Soleil performer, National German Wheel coach for German Gymnastic Federation, just to name a few, put students through a variety of training sessions to teach students about safety, control, technique and aspects of performance.

Abby from German Wheel Sydney, took students through their paces on Cyr Wheel, instructing students on individual and paired techniques.

We were very privileged to have Abby and Wolfgang work with the students, with Wolfgang coming over from the US to run a number of workshops around Australia and New Zealand

Boys’ and Girls’ AFL

On Wednesday 7 August, Year 9 and 10 students from Kelso High Campus joined with their Bathurst High teammates in the Schools Cup AFL Western Regional finals for both boys’ and girls’.

Both Denison teams had qualified for the event by winning the Western carnival in April.

Both teams played 3 games at Blacktown International Sports Complex.

The girls’ side won 2 of their 3 matches and finished runners up in the tournament. The team had wins against Emmaus Catholic College from Kemp’s Creek and Gilroy Catholic College, Castle Hill. They went down to a very strong team from Mt St Joseph School, Milperra, though the girls were very competitive. The team performed consistently throughout all games and all players competed strongly against their opponents. Kelso High players Tara Trindall, Elly Rudd, Lillee Bullock and Amy Parker were particularly strong, along with Bathurst High’s Zoey Peters, Tayla Slattery and Dakota Nugent.

The boys’ team were competitive against some very strong opposition, including Westfield Sports High School and Castle Hill High School, and won their final match against De la Sale College, Revesby. Kelso High’s Zac Yandle had a particularly good day, playing consistently in all games. Cooper Sutherland added some strength to the team and won some important contests. Evan Cafe, Charlie Hutchings and Nathan Barlow (Bathurst High Campus) were also very strong.
