Farewell to Year 12 Students

This week the College farewelled its Year 12 students via a Chapel service at St Matthew’s Church in Albury and then a formal assembly at the College on Thursday. I take this opportunity to wish our Year 12 students the best of luck as they finish their formal classes and prepare for their external HSC exams commencing early next term.

I hope that all Year 12 students make the best use of the limited time left between now and their HSC exams. It is important for them to maintain a good study routine, eat and sleep well and keep up some physical exercise on a regular basis!

As I did at their farewell assembly, I pray for them, especially over the next few months, but for their futures beyond Trinity. I pray that their lives beyond Trinity will be fulfilling and rewarding:

Trinity’s Inaugural Art Exhibition: A Great Success! I am really pleased to report that last weekend the College’s inaugural Art Exhibition was a resounding success! On a cold and wet Friday night about 130 people still managed to gather to celebrate the official opening of the Exhibition and the announcement of the prize winners for the two main categories – the Emerging Artist award and the Acquisitive Art award. Friday night’s opening was also a terrific performance opportunity for a number of our student musicians and I thank Mr Haymes and Mr Spokes for their work in coordinating the musical entertainment. Thanks must also go to our student waiters who did a grand job ensuring that the crowd was well fed throughout the night.

Over the course of the weekend, the Exhibition was seen by around 400 visitors and 21 works of art were sold. This is a tremendous outcome and I know that the committee behind the event is very pleased with both the number of visitors and works sold!

I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the members of the Committee for their enthusiastic support of this initiative and for their commitment to presenting the event as professionally as possible. Those on the committee included: Rowena Newcomen Sarah Bradbury Kate Millan Trudy O’Connor Robina Maconochie Rebecca Bullock Belinda Hill Karen McLean Greg Davis Susan Delcour Chris Pidd

Of course, I am keen to acknowledge and publicly thank those businesses who happily sponsored the Exhibition. Their willingness to do so is appreciated and I hope that the College community will keep them in mind when they are out and about doing some shopping or looking for somewhere to eat. Our corporate sponsors were: Hume Country Motor Inn The Border Mail Freedom HotHouse Theatre The Commercial Club Quantum Print Services Evans Shoes In Style at Peards Rydges, Albury All Saints Estate Thurgoona Bakery Aroma’s Café The Albion Hotel The Manor House Motel Northpoint Bakery Stanton & Killeen Wines The Hume Inn Motel – Bonetti’s Pizza

Overall, I am really pleased with last weekend and I look forward to next year’s Art Exhibition late in Term 3! Staffing News This week we farewelled Mr Christian Beattie from staff as he and his family move to Queensland. Mr Beattie has been teaching in a part-time capacity our senior Hospitality classes and we are sorry to see him move from the College. I am pleased to announce however, that Ms Mary Widdicombe has agreed to return to the College in a part-time capacity to take over the current Year 11 Hospitality class from Mr Beattie and take them through their HSC course commencing next term and finishing at the end of Term 3, 2014! I am grateful that we have been able to convince Ms Widdicombe to return to the College in this capacity – she is an experienced Hospitality teacher and much admired and respected by staff and students!

I am pleased to announce the following staffing appointments to commence in the 2014 school year:

1. Head of Junior School – Mr Steven Armstrong has been appointed to this senior leadership position and will bring to the position a lot of outstanding experience both as a teacher and educational leader. Mr Armstrong is currently head of the newly established Junior School programme at Oxley College in Bowral. A few years ago the Principal at Oxley asked Mr Armstrong to lead the process of establishing the K-6 programmes as the College Board decided that strategically it was time to expand their operations from a successful 7-12 Senior School to a K-12 model. Prior to this role, Mr Armstrong was the Deputy Head – Academic at Oxley College from 1997 – 2011. Mr Armstrong is a passionate teacher having taught across the primary curriculum more recently, as well as all levels of Mathematics and RAVE in the Senior School.

I am delighted that Mr Armstrong will be joining the Junior School at the Albury campus next year and know that the College community will warmly welcome him and his wife, Kate when they arrive!

2. Mrs Sarah Dunlop – with three Kinder classes graduating to Year 1 next year at the Albury campus, I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Mrs Sarah Dunlop to teach one of the three Year 1 classes from the beginning of next year. Mrs Dunlop is currently on staff at ASPECT and has taught in a number of primary schools in and around the region for several years. I know that Sarah is very pleased to be joining the Trinity staff next year and that she will bring great experiences and skills to this all important formative Stage 1 programme of our Junior School.

College Closed on Monday, 23 September Please note that the College will be closed on Monday, 23 September. As an important part of the construction of the new Science Centre, the electricians have to shut down the power for the entire day as they link the new facility to our mains power. As a result, the College office will not be able to operate next Monday but will return to normal vacation operations on Tuesday, 24 September.

P&F Car Raffle – please return all ticket books and money! The ticket books for the car raffle have been recently recalled and I appreciate the effort people have made to return the ticket books and associated money promptly. However, there are still a good number of ticket books out there and I would ask that students and parents return them sold or unsold as soon as possible to the College office. Please drop the ticket books and money into the office as soon as possible during the vacation period!

Term 4 Reminders A reminder that starting dates for next term are as follows:

Wodonga Campus – Monday 7 October 2013

Albury Campus - Tuesday 8 October (due to the NSW Labour Day public holiday on the Monday)

The term will commence with ‘A’ week classes and students are reminded that they should return in correct summer uniform, including the College hat.

Year 11 students: pattern of HSC study Our Year 11 students have reached the end of the Preliminary HSC Course and deserve congratulations for achieving this milestone.

During this week, all Year 11 students have received information about the processes they need to undertake in order to alter their pattern of study for the HSC. Whilst students are generally not able to commence new subjects (the exception being extension subjects), they are able to discontinue subjects in order to study a minimum of 10 units in Year 12. Many of the students have been contemplating whether they will continue to study all of the subjects within which they are currently engaged. The students are able to seek advice to facilitate these important decisions from Mr Malcolm Thomas, the Head of Senior School, Mrs Fletcher, the Careers Advisor, and myself.

The HSC course begins for the students upon their return to the College in Term 4; this is an exciting time for our Year 11 students.

Year 12 students: completion The conclusion of 13 years of formal school education is a most significant milestone, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the very best to our Year 12 students as they approach the culmination of all their efforts in the HSC examinations that commence in October.

From the College Chaplain

William Wilberforce was born in 1759 in England, the son of a wealthy merchant. After studying at Cambridge, Wilberforce became a member of parliament. But it was meeting John Newton that changed his life.

Before he became a Christian, Newton had captained a slave ship; but God convicted him of the horrors of slavery. He turned his life around becoming a preacher and hymn writer. In fact, he wrote one of the most famous hymns of all time, Amazing Grace.

John Newton had a massive influence on Wilberforce. In 1787, Wilberforce initiated a campaign to make Great Britain aware of the atrocities of slavery and vote for its abolition. It was a fierce fight, and hard work. Politicians, industrialists, even religious leaders who had their own slaves opposed him. But William Wilberforce never gave up, always aware that the lives of millions were at stake. Twenty-six years later, near the end of Wilberforce’s life, slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire.

‘So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up’. (Galatians 6:9). How can we take up this challenge daily?

Trinity Swifts won the Girls Under 16 Division 2 after going the whole season undefeated. Their grand final win against Panthers Storm was by a dominating 23 points! A big thank you to their coach Lauren Cavanough. By all accounts they have all had a great season and look forward to the next season together.

Trinity Lakers, coached by Mr Leary, also had a good win over Scots (32-18) to take out the Under 16 Boys Division 2 Grand final. All the boys played well in a great team effort. Bailey Waters and Bren Ingram joined the Lakers this season and made an excellent contribution. Zac Sproule was fantastic under the basket. Team stalwarts Sean Nielsen, Oliver Bradford, Harry Warner and Bailey Stewart led the team around the court very well.

“Thanks to Mr Payne for coaching the Trinity Tadpoles and teaching us all the cool tricks and strategies. We have all learned a lot from you. It’s been a really good season and we have had lots of fun playing together and learning new skills. Lauren Jackson better watch out!! We made it to the semi-finals but hopefully we will go even further next season.” (Bronte Bass)

Congratulations must go to all our basketball teams with a huge thanks to our coaches who have worked tirelessly. The new summer season begins Week 1 of Term 4.

Invitation

Parents and the local community are invited to attend the following performance free of charge on Thursday 31 October 2013 commencing at 12 noon in the MPH:

Musica Viva – Outta Africa – The Sound of Senegal - Tama, djembe, doondoon, balafon, fula and Griot - welcome to the musical traditions of West Africa. Teranga frontman Pape Mbaye is a Senegalese Griot; a poet, musician, storyteller and ‘praise singer’ renowned for quick wit and a sharp tongue. Combine this with some of the best African drummers this side of the Indian Ocean and you’re in for a rollicking ride through the rhythms of this fascinating content. It’s not all drumming; students will recognise melodic instruments like the flute and sousaphone. Outta Africa is essentially a rhythm-driven journey through song and dance into the heart of Senegalese culture. But what Teranga really does best is bring the rhythm of life, to life!
