How did the Christmas tree come about?

Tracing all the way back to the 16th century, in the country of Germany, Christians brought decorated trees into their homes to celebrate the season.

Back in the day, trees were decorated it with food such as apples, nuts, or cookies.

Heard of the tradition of cookies and milk for Santa? The story goes that Santa would often snack on the decorations because they looked so delicious. Over time, while Christmas tree decorations changed, but the idea of leaving snacks for Santa stayed.

Bottled water use up a lot of plastic. According to a report, roughly 900 million kg of plastic are used for bottling 89 billion litres of water each year.

Sea creatures are also affected, since plastics cannot rot, when not thrown away properly, it ends up in the ocean and are often mistaken as food. A poor whale was found dead recently with plastic which had choked up in its body.

Did you know?

Bottled water uses up a lot of water to make too! It takes three times the amount of water to create one bottle of water than it does to fill it.

Blind taste test studies have also shown that people are unable to tell what’s different between tap water and bottled water.

Try it!Blindfold a friend and have him/her drink from two separate cups – one filled with tap water and one filled with bottled water. Ask if he/she can taste the difference!

You can do your part for the

environment!• Drink from glasses,

water coolers or even aluminium cans

whenever possible when you are out.

Too many plastic water bottles at home? Instead of just throwing it away, use them for things like these:

Cut away the top of the bottle to make it into an organizer for your pencils and knick knacks.

Reuse your plastic bottle as a soap bottle by removing the pump top of an old soap bottle and placing it on your plastic bottle.

Using bottle caps to create pieces of art

Fill it with rice or beans and use it as a shaker for an instrument.

Have an idea for re-using water bottles? Send us your ideas and pictures and stand a chance to win $3 Smålish dållars added to your småles account! Share it with us by emailing [email protected] with the subject line ‘Water bottle’ by 31 December 2015.

Alex and Tampi found a strange looking seed and decided to plant it. What did it become? Send your story to småles, 60 Tampines North Dr 2. Singapore 528764 or email us at [email protected] and you stand a chance to win a LATTJO tangram puzzle.

IT was a sunny day, Tampi and Alex was relaxing in their house with the air-condition on. Suddenly! The doorbell rang, Alex went out and check, all he saw was a box. Alex brought the box in. Tampi asked “What’s inside?” “Don’t know” replied Alex. So Tampi opened the box. He saw a tin of corn. Alex had no idea why someone would give a tin of corn, but Tampi wanted to make popcorn. After they finished making popcorn, they both had it for dessert.

“Ding Dong!” the doorbell rang. Alex and Tamoi rushed to the door. They opened it but could not see anyone. They wanted to close the door, but Alex found a present on their doorstep! They quickly picked up the present and inspected it if it was dangerous. While checking, they found a note. It said “To Alex and Tampi.”

There was no return address, so they decided to keep the present. In the safety and warmth in their house, the two hearts opened the present slowly and carefully. IT turned out to be a box of feathers! Alex and Tampi read a note in the box, “Hi Alex and Tampi! This letter is from Lele! This is a box of wishing feathers! You can use them any time you want to grant a wish, but be warned: Each time you make a wish, one feather will fly away!”

Alex and Tampi smiled. They thought that it was kind that Lele has spared a thought to give them such a wonderful present. Theyh looked forward to using their wishes for helping all the animals of the forest.

One very hazy day,as Alex stepped out of his house to get his mail, he saw a parcel on his doorstep. Who sent it? Why did he or she send it? Alex’s head was full of questions as he had never recieved a parcel before. He ran in gleefully to tell Tampi and forgot all about his mail. “Tampi, look at this!” Alex said excitedly. Tampi turned around from what he was doing. His eyes gleamed when he saw the parcel. “Let ME find out what’s inside,” he said selfishly. Alex became mad and they started arguing. They soon forgot what they were arguing about and opened the parcel. They found a note inside along with a box of chocolates and two train tickets. The note said:

Dear Alex and Tampi, you are invited to Paris to see The Effiel Tower. As we are going by train, here’s some chocolates for you to keep yourselves occupied while travelling. Just don’t eat all in ONE go! I will be waiting for you at my house. Do you remember my address? Gardens Din, forth lane, #23-26. Meet you there on the 16th of November, at 5p.m. sharp. XOXO, your old friendBinilyAlex and Tampi jumped in joy. They had not been to Paris before and were very eager to see the Effiel Tower. They went to Paris to meet Binily and there were many “oohs” and “aahs” when they saw the famous tower. They felt glad to have such a wonderful friend like Binily and happy to see the Effiel Tower with him.

Alex and Tampi was enjoying a sunny Saturday afternoon at home when something landed on their doorstep. Alex got the door and there was a small package on the floor. He picked it up and called for Tampi. They opened the package together, and found a mirror inside it. Alex looked into the mirror and saw himself. He was standing with lots of little animals. Tampi, however showed him in outer space. Tampi told Alex what he saw but Alex just couldn't see it. They turned over the mirror and found a note sticking there:

Dear Alex and Tampi,I'm having a little vacation in the village of mysteries. I bought this mirror in a little junk shop. It's suppose to show what you want in the deepest of your heart.Hope you're well!Torva Carrot Cecilia Zhou Yixi, 9 years old

"Ding!" The doorbell rang. Alex went to get the door. But when he opened the door, no one was there! Alex looked down and saw a package. Curious, he picked it up and headed back to the living room where Tampi sat on the sofa. "Hey Tampi! I found this package...It has our names on it!" Tampi took the box from Alex's hands and examined the box."Let's open it." Tampi suggested before opening the box. Almost instantly, Alex and Tampi were transported to a world of clouds and sweets. "Oh look! Peppermint canes!" Alex happily pulled one out from a short tree."The clouds are really soft!" No sooner than Tampi spoke were they transported back to their own living room. "I wish we could go there again..." Alex and Tampi both sighed, then sat on their sofa as they started to daydream about the cloudy and candy world.

There! What do you think about it? Hope you liked it!

Jenna Lim, 10 years old

“Tampi! I found you!” Alex exclaimed. They were playing Hide-and-seek. Suddenly..“Ding Dong” the doorbell rang. “I’ll get it!” Tampi hollered. He ran to the door and opened it every so slightly. There was nobody! He opened itbigger, then saw something outside. It was a gigantic red and white box, that was kind of weird as it had a few holes in it that has been cut.

“Alex!” Tampi shouted. They were in the living room getting ready to open the box. “Okay, let’s open” Alex said. They opened the box and saw two cute little puppies with two dog beds!“Wow!” Alex cried. “I’ll have one and you can have another one.” “I’ll name you..Boxer!”Tampi said to his puppy. “And I’ll name you… Package!” Alex said. And with that, they lived happily with their puppies, Boxer and Package.

Tee Jing Yun, 9 years old"Alex, it's such a beautiful, nice day! Why don't

we go out for a walk or a picnic?" asked the high spirited Tampi. "Yeah, I guess we should enjoy the lazy afternoon and go for a picnic. I need a breather." Alex answered. They prepared their water bottles and went to the door. "Wait, I forgotten about the food!" As Alex went in to get the food Tampi decided to go and wait for Alex.

Suddenly, he found a lovely box at the door. "Hey Alex! Alex! Look at this!" shouted the excited Tampi. Alex walked out in a sunken face and exclaimed, "I'm not done packing! I haven't even started." Before Alex could continue Tampi ignoring Alex took the box and opened it. Inside the box there were many variety of food and looked delicious. "Wow, I can see that we no need to pack our food for picnic after all." They happily carried the box and head for their picnic.
